Claridge's was on my hotel bucket list and my first stay there not only lived up to my expectations, it far surpassed them beyond anything I could have imagined. If you are interested in what "The Claridge's Experience" is truly like, keep reading—but be warned, this is a necessarily long review! Sidebar: I would have written this review sooner, but I came down with bronchitis upon returning the States. :-(My husband and I had the pleasure of staying at Claridge's from December 30, 2016—January 5, 2017. It was the perfect location to ring in the New Year and set the tone for 2017. From the moment we checked in, until we (regretfully) checked out, our experience was exceptional.Check-in: Walking into the hotel, we were impressed by the holiday decor, which seamlessly blended in with the elegant Art Deco design of the hotel. The reception staff were warm and professional throughout our check-in experience, which as it turned out, took slightly longer than usual because their credit card reader was malfunctioning, resulting in an inordinately long time to pre-authorize our credit card. Hoping for an early check-in, we had arrived shortly after 12 pm. The room wasn't ready, but the desk agent deposited us in the Fumoir Lounge to wait with glasses of champagne. My husband and I were in no rush so we were more than happy to read the paper and sip complimentary bubbles. After about 30 minutes, the bartender came over and refilled our glasses. "Since you're still waiting," he said. Another 30 minutes or so passed, so we decided to go have lunch and do a little shopping in the neighborhood. While we were at lunch, Claridge's called to inform us our room was ready so we made our way back.The Room: When I booked our stay through Amex FHR, I believe I selected a Superior King room. We'd originally planned to stay at Claridge's for 3 nights, then visit Paris for 3 nights, but we'd changed our minds a few weeks before the trip so I'd booked Claridge's again for an additional 3 nights. I knew I'd confused the poor desk staff with my two reservations, but they merged them with ease and assured us that we would be in the same room throughout our 6 night stay—all we would have to do is get our keys recoded on the 3rd day. The desk agent confirmed our FHR benefits and led us to the elevator so that she could take us to our room. As we were about to board, the front desk manager walked over and told us we were in a "nice" room and she hoped we would like it. I was just thrilled to be staying at Claridge's at all—I probably would have been content in the broom closet!When the desk agent opened the door to our room, it took us a moment to realize we'd been upgraded to a suite—we were that stunned. Our eyes wide, we stepped into the foyer. The immaculate suite was the size of a small apartment and even had its own (real) decorated Christmas tree in the spacious living room. So festive! There was a fireplace, too, and the lovely marble bathroom had a separate shower and an enormous tub. I took advantage of the latter every night with long soaks after exploring the city. The bedroom was double the size of our bedroom at home with three massive wardrobes, and a vanity table in front of the window. Spending the next 6 nights in this suite was going to be a joy to be sure!Once she was certain we were pleased with our accommodations, the desk agent offered to have tea sent up (yes, please!). We also noticed a bottle of chilled champagne on the table waiting for us. We could not believe our good fortune then, and frankly, still can't now, even some 2 weeks later. Oh! I forgot to mention the bed. The mattress and bedding were so sumptuous, I was reluctant to get out of it each morning and couldn't wait to crawl into it at night. The Service: More often than not, I don't take the time to write reviews for hotels unless the experience was truly wonderful or so lackluster I feel compelled to "warn" others. Our experience at Claridge's was one I simply could not go without reviewing, mostly because the service we received there was so flawless. Every single staff person with whom we interacted was incredibly friendly, professional, and helpful. All of them. From the front desk staff, to the housekeepers, to the concierges, to the restroom attendants, to the engineers who had to come help us resolve a small issue (by the way, the hotel manager personally called us to apologize for the issue), to the spa staff (a Sisley facial is a must)—everyone was terrific. I regret not remembering the name of the bartender in The Fumoir we interacted with most because he is phenomenal. From Day 1, he remembered us by name and was always a pleasure to talk to whenever we visited. The staff in Claridge's Bar were equally marvelous. They are so good at making sure guests are comfortable and they effortlessly (or so it seems) keep track of when guests walk in and who is next up for a table when one becomes available. We spent New Year's Eve in the bar and it was exactly how we'd envisioned ringing in 2017: cozy, elegant, and quiet with delicious cocktails and superb service. Just before midnight, the bar staff gathered everyone and led them out of the bar and into the Claridge's foyer for a champagne toast. There was also a bagpiper. Magical.The Food: Being vegans, we were thrilled with the vegan options detailed in the room service menu. We enjoyed room service twice and the food was delicious on both occasions. The highlight of our food experience, however, was the Festive Afternoon Tea we enjoyed on New Year's Day. Claridge's was able to accommodate our diet with all vegan fare, including a delectable selection of tea sandwiches, several varieties of scones, and pastries. All. Vegan. For us this was monumental, as we were expecting they would only be able to provide a vegetarian tea. The food was incredible and the tea selection extensive. Also, in keeping with Claridge's top-notch service, our server even made me a special pot of fresh ginger and lemon tea when he discovered I was fighting a cold. This concoction, in addition to the Claridge's honey, was so soothing for my chesty cough. Our server sent us away with a gift, too.Location: Mayfair. Need I say more? Okay, I will. Absolutely everything on our must-do list was within a short or reasonable walking distance. Selfridges, shopping on New Bond Street, dining at Hakkasan and Chiltern, The Connaught, Piccadilly, Oxford, Boots, casual restaurants and cafes—everything was close. We were also able to enjoy a morning run to Hyde Park. There is an underground station a stone's throw away, too. We mostly walked everywhere, although we took taxis on those occasions when I wore heels.Check-Out: They made it a breeze and sent us off with the same warmth and hospitality with which they welcomed us. Even at 5:30 am, the staff cheerfully made sure those of us heading to the airport had coffee and boxed pastries to take with.Overall: Spending the New Year holiday at Claridge's will remain one of my best travel experiences. They are well-deserving of their reputation. If you are looking for an exquisite historic hotel with old-school service, charm, class, and sophistication (but not at all stuffy), Claridge's will not disappoint. Trust me.
There is no hotel with quite the elegant feel of Claridge's. For example, its Art Decco Dinning Room with its lofty carved ceiling, antiqued mirrors, soft and warming LIVE music through tea and dinner, superb food and excellent service. Its Christmas decorations are the best anywhere. Then, too, Claridge's staff is second to none, and my wife and I have experienced most of the Western World's best. The rooms and beds are excellent as well. Spencer Tracy, among the best known actors of the 20th Century said it well, "When I die, I don't want to go to Heaven; I want to go to Claridge's."
From the curb upon arrival until you check out, you'll be impressed with this luxury hotel. The foyer, the dining room, and the bar and the rooms all exude luxury in the old style. Be sure to chat with the excellently trained and super friendly staff; they have stories to tell and will help maximize your stay.
We were guests at a family wedding just before Christmas and were immensely impressed with the entire experience provided by Claridge's. The wedding party was superbly looked after - every detail was perfect and the pre-planning and coordination simply magnificent. Needless to say the unique vintage ambience of Claridge's provided a perfect setting for a Christmas wedding and the staff worked incredibly hard to ensure the decoration and service was on point. Beautiful food, wonderfully presented and served, immaculate surroundings, seamless transition of rooms from afternoon to evening requirements and terrific entertainment made the whole experience unforgettable and quite magical. This hotel is surely one the world's best - not the largest or the most flashy, but simply classic. elegant and magnificent.
Stayed in claridges on 7 January!We was made so very welcome! From the moment we arrived outside.All the staff have a very professional attitude and are all so wonderfully trained.The rooms were spotless! The food was excellent! Everywhere was spotless! Every time you walked past a member of staff you are made to feel so special.This is clearly by far the best run hotel in London.Thank you so much claridges! We can't wait to return.
