Montana Hotel Kensington

My wife and I stayed at the Montana Hotel, Kensington from November 8th to 18th. We found the hotel to be exceedingly clean and comfortable. The hotel staff were courteous and very helpful. Particularly noteworthy were the young women working in the restaurant for the morning breakfast. These young women were cheerful and efficient every morning, getting coffee or tea to you almost before you reached the table the hostess was escorting you to. (Tables were always available and set when we arrived for breakfast)The buffet breakfast (continental) was very good and always fresh and replenished. Items on offer included cereal, yogurt, cheese, cold meat, toast (with an assortment of breads and jams to choose from), pastries, fruit, juices, and other items.A bonus was that you were able to, without charge, substitute the buffet breakfast for a full English breakfast consisting of eggs (cooked to order), bacon, sausage, tomatoes and beans. The location of this hotel is ideal from my perspective. It's at the corner of Gloucester Road and Cromwell Road, just steps from the Gloucester Road tube station which is served by three lines, the Piccadilly, Circle and District lines. For most London site seeing you reach the attractions using one of these lines, without requiring a transfer.
We stayed at the Montana 29-30 September. The locale is great, just around the corner from the Natural History and Science Museums and across the street from the tube station. The problem is the Lift ( maybe just big enough for 2 adult males without luggage) which is very very slow. Our family room overlooked the dustbins in the basement until we changed it to the 4 th floor. The bathroom en suite was a small prefabricated one with just about enough room to turn around in. The Lift broke down and the reception seemed totally unconcerned - " you can use the stairs"! It just seemed that as guests we were not particularly important anymore - we had paid upfront. Such a shame when the Hotel is surrounded by other and probably better Hotels - Rydges and Radisson Blu etc.
When writing reviews over the years I find it is important to judge what you are paying for. This is not a 5 star hotel, but you are not paying for a 5 star hotel. London is an extremely expensive city. I was pleasantly surprised by this hotel. London is a huge city so it is key to be near a tube station. this hotel is only a couple of minutes to Gloucester Road station that has the major advantage of having 3 lines run through it. This makes travel around London much easier. One of the lines runs to Paddington station, about 4 stops away, where you can join the Heathrow Express. So you can get to Paddington from Heathrow in 15 minutes and then have a short transfer to get to the hotel. About 30 minutes all up. The area near the hotel is very nice, a short walk to the Albert and Victoria museum and expensive areas including Harrods. The room I was in was very comfortable with good mattress, updated bathroom with good hot water and it was quiet. The Wi-Fi was good and the staff were very helpful.I eat at the Indian restaurant on the ground floor. It was good and as a guest I received a 15 % discount. There are many places for a quick and cheap breakfast nearby, including a supermarket. I was surprised to get this good a location and room for about 94 pound a night (without breakfast). Hope this is helpful.
Stayed in this hotel only for 1 night with 2 months old baby. Was very pleased with our room. Good size for price we paid. Also we had a fridge in the room. Not very comfy for pram to get in, had to carry it up stairs and lift is super tiny but the rest was good. Walking distance to Harrods and musiums.
We stayed here over a weekend. We had a twin room (actually got a single and a double bed) & a single. The twin room was large and spacious enough, clean and plenty of tea/coffee. Bathroom clean and plenty of towels.Single room was small and facilities further down the corridor? Was ok!Really wanted interconnecting rooms, but don't do them.Check in was friendly, but we were given a room number that was already occupied! Could have been embarrassing!!!!! Luckily not! All sorted out quickly.Breakfast good value for London. Staff very helpful & friendly. Never short of tea/coffee service. We were unlucky to have noisey guests next to us, that left at 5.30 am. Banging cases about and shouting at each other?!On site Indian restaurant, but never used it. Plenty of eating places in the local vacinity and the tube station opposite.Did drop our bags off in the morning before check in, which was great.Hotel is pleasant and the staff helpful & friendly BUT really needs a makeover and bringing up ro date. This would be an excellent hotel then. Spent money on the exterior and reception, but rooms really need a little TLC. Having said that, when I go back to London, I will be staying in this hotel.
