I haven't stayed in The Cumberland for 2 or 3 years. They have redecorated the entrance hall (far bigger than a lobby!) and adjoining bar, which both look very smart, albeit very open. I chose a room in their second building (apparently those rooms have a larger bed), just a minute down the road from the main hotel. I was offered a choice and I correctly guessed this building would be quieter. My room was large and smartly decorated, albeit a little bit tired. The view was a bit Mary Poppins, although there were no dancing or singing chimney sweeps to be seen! My bed was indeed large, and comfortable, although I did notice the corner of the base was held together by gaffer tape! Anyway, the room was quiet and even had black out sliding shutters on the windows, so no complaints there. As per my title, despite the room being a bit tired, I can't really complain. I just wish they hadn't closed the local KFC!
When I was checked in I turned upto the room to find that there was someone else in the room! I heard a similar story from 2 other guests too! The staff at front desk seemed to be very disorganised and long wait each time you needed to speak to them. Plenty of better places to stay in London
Excellent location, near to Hyde park & marble arch. Rooms are convenient yet the rate is expensive. Clean & good service. It just need more care towards entrance smell & seating; it would be nice if it smells good when you enter the hotel & to provide people waiting a seating area. Moreover, more variety should be considered in breakfast.
Located at the top of Oxford Street the Cumberland is in prime position for shopping and the West End.I had booked 5 rooms at the Hotel for my wife's birthday celebration and was fortunate to have a very good discounted rate. If I had had to pay the published rate of around £250 per room per night I would have wanted my money back. On check-in I was asked if I wanted breakfast added to my room rate but that they would only do so for both nights. As I had already arranged for Sunday brunch I declined the offer. But as a result the hotel missed out on me booking a breakfast for Saturday - and I had to find an alternative - not a big problem in the West End but a bit bureaucratic and unnecessary. The first room I was allocated (4088) was a small, narrow corridor of a room, with the bed pushed against the wall, so to get out you would have to clamber over your partner! I tried to iron a shirt, and the trouser press/ironing board fell off the wall, which could have injured me but fortunately I was able to avoid the whole contraption - and hot iron! On the way out for the evening I requested a change of room which was agreed to without any fuss whatsoever, by the helpful reception staff. And on return that evening we moved to the new room, which although was clean, tidy - and functional rather than luxurious - it was an improvement but still quite small, with noisy aircon. During the night you could also hear people in the corridors chatting and opening and closing doors. The good bits were in the Momentus Bar. I had organised an early evening drinks reception as a meet point for 14 people attending my wife's birthday party.Vlad the Bar Manager was very helpful in organising a nice table for us and although he wasn't there at the reception, we were looked after very well by Alex, Maria and other bar staff who were all very attentive, even going to the trouble of, unprompted, organising a temporary vase for some flowers a friend had bought for my wife - which was a nice touch.Overall, it was nice to be in such a good location and staff were very good, but if doing something similar I would probably look elsewhere before booking the Cumberland.
If you are in London for shopping, perfect location. very close to Primark. easy to travel, just 2min walk from Marble Arch tube station. breakfast is good. the only thing is the crowd. hotel is so big and always very crowded, so hard to get a lift to get down/up. sometimes it takes 20 min. main building is not recommended but the secondary building is much better. hotel managers should focus on cleaning!!
