My wife and I stayed at the Thistle Kensington Gardens in late June. Overall the experience was very good. We were celebrating my birthday and the hotel left a card and some very tasty macaroons to wish me a happy birthday which was very nice. We paid for the “deluxe” room with a view of the park. I asked them for a high floor to improve our view and they gave us a room on the 8th floor which was perfect. The lobby had free bottles of water which was a nice touch. The check in process was a little slow as the desk clerk was training someone and neither spoke English as a first language. Oddly, they really pushed us to take their “Breakfast Package”. When I said no thank you, the receptionist pushed us to take it for just one day “to try it”. I didn’t appreciate it. A free one-day trial might have been a better idea.To my surprise, the room did not come with a refrigerator. I called the desk and they were only able to give us a “medical” refrigerator which was disappointing but we made do.The room had a door for an adjoining room which I always find a little weird but that’s just me. The walls are but thin but no different than most hotels. The room itself was a little shabby with several stains on the carpet. The drain in the bath tub was broken. We could fill up the tub but to drain it we needed to use a spoon to pry the drain plug up. I called three times asking to have it fixed. We were three for 5 nights and it was never addressed. The last time I called, the person at the desk said I should stop by in the morning and then again in the afternoon to make sure they knew about it. I thought the three calls should have been enough. These were minor annoyances really but given the price of the room, I expected better.Overall it was a good experience. But if I return to the area, and I probably will, I’ll check around because there are several hotels in this price range there around the park.
Terribly disappointed with the room and hotel. Booked for a surprise birthday weekend for my husband and I was quite embarrassed to have made him stay there. The room was tiny. First impressions as we walked towards the hotel weren’t that great, It is above a petrol station. Stayed in a standard double and it was very small! The room decor was dated and needs a bit of revamp. Cleanliness was 6/10. There was no view from the window and we were happy to be back home after the stay in that room. I informed the hotel when I made the booking that it was my husband’s birthday that weekend and no special efforts were made. The staff are helpful and friendly and the reception area and restaurant is okay. But overall the hotel is very compact and rooms are tiny. Location is good but I won’t be staying here again, it actually really put me off staying in London in the future, as it was not worth what I paid for a tiny room.
This is the kind of chain hotel that delivers, what you see is what you get. Reliable in delivering standarised services and quality. Nice and spacious (to be London) room. Clean and semi-stylish.Great breakfast buffet.
We have stayed here a few times now, and it is still one of the best-value deals in Central London. Two blocks away from Queensway Tube Station, it is right across the road from Hyde Park and within walking distance of Notting Hill and Portobello Road, yet just a few stops from the main shopping and theatre areas. The Hotel seems to have been renovated since our last stay, so everything is in pristine order, with compact yet highly functional rooms.Tip: If you intend having breakfast, say so at check-in for a substantial reduction in price - breakfast is an extensive buffet (but not extensive enough for some, who after 2 or 3 plates piled high with food, still took away sandwiches they made up, pastries and yoghurts!)A nice touch is that they now have free bottles of water available in a fridge at reception - ideal when it was hot, as during our visit.Staff are professional, whatever time of day or night - my wife asked for green tea sachets for our room and they were delivered prior to our return.Room was made up while we were at breakfast (we were on the top floor) - always good not to have to wait to go back to your room!Only gripe is that there was a low vibrating hum (we assumed that the room next door had left the AC on all night), so found it very difficult to sleep on the first night - on the second night it wasn't as loud, so we assume that our immediate neighbours had not turned the AC on, but possibly the room next to theirs. All in all, we will go back again and again if we need to stay in London overnight (good location if attending the Proms concerts as the Royal Albert Hall is just the other side of the Park, even if the Park is closed at night).
We were disappointed with the small room assigned by our travel service, but within one day, with the wonderful help of Esmeralda Miralles we were reassigned (with no extra charge to us) a beautiful room overlooking Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park. The staff was friendly and responsive. The included breakfast was very healthy and provided excellent choices. The beds were very comfortable, and we found the hotel centrally located and easy to schedule the sightseeing in London that we were so anxious to arrange. We were very pleased with our stay in this hotel.
