Howard Johnson Hotel and Water Playground
- What's Included
Our OpinionA great choice! The Howard Johnson Hotel and Water Playground is excellent for families. There is a large pirate cove themed water park with slides, water canons and a 30 foot pirate ship. The hotel has a cool retro look and the rooms are charming and clean. The games room is another great family perk. Cots are available for a fee, cribs are free but on request. This award winning hotel is great for all families members and is only an 8 minute walk to the Disneyland main gate.
I have never complained about a hotel before, but I was disappointed with this stay - my hotel should be clean, have a nice hot shower, and quiet. This hotel was clean, but the hot water ran out after 1 minute each day, and the constant road noise from being 30 feet away from I-5 was terrible. The front desk said the lower floors have soundproof sliding doors for their balcony but upper floors are "further away" from the interstate so they don't. They didn't seem surprised by the hot water complaint, and said they would make a note for maintenance. I was on the 7th floor of building one, you might get lucky and get a different building with less road noise and a better water situation. But I can't recommend taking the chance. All the other hotels walking distance from Disney are further from I-5, and I suspect they probably have hot showers, so next time I will try one of them. My trip wasn't a disaster, but cold showers and constant road noise aren't the relaxing vacation I was hoping for.
We were told this was the best place to stay, in fact others reviews rave about it. We had two children (12 and 10). We found the room dated and had a musty smell and need of a make over, fridge didn't work and the second sink didn't drain. Even in Jan the pool complex was open. The noise from Interstate 5 was constant and around the clock. The Walk to the park was about 15 minutes. We would recommend looking around as the noise is quite bad and the place is dated. Only saviour was the short walk. As for eating, if you want to spend all your money on food then you can eat out all the time. We would look at an apartment next time.Hope this helps?
Overall probably 4.5 stars. I think 10-15 minute walk to Disneyland depending on the heat. Stayed here on days of 40+, so very hot. Main pool area is the best amenity. A dip in the shady pool after walking the parks is great. Rooms ok. Bit dated but clean. Beds just comfortable. Not a great deal of space after adding a trundle but fine as you don't spend much time in the room. Not sure how many guest rooms but seemed more boutique and not crowded like the large neighbouring hotels. Lots of trees so gardens cool. I guess because the parks are so close, people pick the time of day to visit them. Can see the fireworks from the spa. Service ok, I guess just lots of rules. Definitely more like a holiday rental than a hotel. Travelling with teens so spent more time at California Adventure. Don't miss the night light show at Cali Adventure - Amazing. Buses around but Uber service amazing. P.S It's a big drive to L.A so coach it.
The property was clean and quiet. The rooms where clean and the beds were comfortable. I would stay here again.
First, sign up for some Wyndam rewards thing, if they are offering that discount. Second, check out the area on google maps and other reviews. This place worked for us, and we will likely go back. Our room was only on the second or third floor, but that was ok. They offered another room if we could wait an hour (we were early), but we were fine. We booked a room that gave a view of Disney's fireworks. And we saw them, just fine. Meanhile, there are amenities that many folks would like, but we did not take advantage of. The pool area seems very well equipped for families. Bright, cheerful. Also an arcade room. There was a little gift shop with Disney stuff that was different from what the parks had. Got some of my gifts for others there. Just a different selection. The room.... well, this is a 60's or 70's property. The main interior feature that shouts that is the yellow tile in the shower. But who cares? It was updated with a micro, a Keurig type coffee maker, a fridge, and an ironing board. The walls were a tad thin and I could hear the children next door one night. This was a 2 queen room. I liked that we walked past a Panera, McDonald's a Pizza by the slice, and other restaurants on the way to the Disney crosswalk. It is a bit of a hike if you have sore feet! I'd say from hotel to crosswalk is halfway. Then crosswalk to front gate is the other half.
