A central location with efficient and helpful staff

We had visited this hotel before 20 years previously when it was known as the Sheraton Yankee Trader. The reason we selected this particular hotel was that we were staying in Fort Lauderdale for two days prior to taking a Caribbean cruise and wanted to be somewhere central where we could walk to all the local bars and restaurants. It's true to say that the hotel is in a prime position with a walkway and lift to the beach and it only cost us $10 to get a taxi to Port Everglades, which was about 10 minutes away. We didn't actually eat in the hotel on this occasion but the staff were friendly and efficient and the rooms clean and spacious. One thing to mention (which is clearly stated on the internet and which we were informed about upon arrival) is that there is a $35 US charge per room per night for "incidentals". These included internet, use of the gym, use of the pool etc. The only advantage to us was internet access but apparently this is compulsory and can amount to a substantial additional cost if staying for a longer period of time. Apparently, this is not uncommon in US hotels, so something to be aware of before booking.

Very poor

Dissatisfied and a rip off. You're paying just for its location nothing more. Horrible service! I called this hotel twice before booking to get information because they charge $45 a night resort fee. This hotel is NOT a resort in any way. It's a basic hotel located on the beach. I asked what the resort fee covered, I was told towels, chairs, beach umbrellas $10 off every 100 spent at the spa, and $10 off a drink. We showed up with heavy luggage and nobody offered us help or a cart to transport it to our room. We lugged it ourselves. Our first full day we attempted to go to the beach. In the pool area I asked the gentlemen who handles the towels how I get a towel and chair for the beach. He told me to walk to the beach and someone will be there with towels and chairs. We walked to the bridge that spans over the street and the elevator was out of service. We walked all around the world to exit the hotel and get to the beach. Once on the beach I asked the gentleman for towels, chairs and umbrella. He informs me that I would get towels at the pool from the same man who sent me to the beach. I was given the run around and was now wasting my vacation chasing towels. I got back to the beach with towels and was now told I had to pay $20 to sit under an umbrella. I purposely called the hotel and specifically asked about the umbrella and if the resort fee covered it and was told yes. (I called twice) The hotel shower had stains on the floor and when I opened the sliding door to get some air in the room I came back with a note from the staff informing me I can't open the door. It was my boyfriend's birthday so I purchased him a cake. I tried using the hotel phone to call the front desk to get some forks and a knife, but nobody ever answered the call. I finally called from my cell phone and got the front desk. They told me someone would bring silverware right up. We waited hours and it never arrived. We couldn't cut the cake, so we just never ate it.At checkout I nicely asked the gentlemen to comp the $20 umbrella and he outright refused. Making an excuse that it takes a long time to alter the bill. Finally my boyfriend got upset and the guy deducted one night of the resort fee. This place shouldn't even have a resort fee. It's no resort. It has nothing to offer. Avoid the spa! $300 for a couples massage, the room was freezing and all they did was slap oil on you. It was similar to someone rubbing sunscreen on you at the beach. Awful experience. I was led to the room to await my masseuse and she came to get me over 20 minutes later. I was about to get up and complain when she walked in. No salts or spa like treatment, and the spa tub was out of service. Not only was the pool elevator broken the main one was not operating either. Avoid!

Exceptional staff and a great restaurant

Great customer service, a clean, spacious room looking out to the ocean, and a delicious New Mexican restaurant, Lona's, that doesn't feel at all like a hotel restaurant - the food was SO good, and the wait staff (esp. Richard R.) fun and helpful. Special appreciation for desk person Lee, who was amazing when we discovered (already at the airport on our way home) that we'd left something behind in our room. She helped get our lost bag to an Uber driver to deliver it to the airport. That's excellent customer service! We will come back to this hotel.
