Aqua Luana Waikiki
- What's Included
The hotel was clean, staff friendly, generally tidy hotel but the rooms were smaller than expected and you couldn't swing a cat in the bathroom! The elevators were so slow I ended up taking the stairs! On check out, I found out they bill you about US$18 per day for a "hospitality fee". This pays for the use of the pool, free video, WIFI, etc - excuse me, I didn't use the pool nor hired any videos although I did use the WIFI to check my emails. Definitely not 4 star, maybe 3 star.
I booked this hotel with Priceline for $143/night. I thought that was on the nicer end of budget hotel spending and with a 3.8 out of 5 rating I thought, how bad could it be?It was pretty terrible. There was only one working elevator, $35/night parking, and thin walls. Our room over looked a gas station and you could hear EVERY noise from outside- garbage truck, skateboarder, you name it.The staff was very nice and the hotel was relatively clean but I would never stay here again.
Nice and clean hotel. Rooms are bigger than we expected. Nice location, close to shopping area, though it takes about 10 minutes to walk to Waikiki. Elevators are slow though.Parking is expensive at $35 overnight.
As a '4 star' stay I would have to say that the Luana hotel and suites Waikiki is defiantly 'self rated'........ The hotel is clean, the staff friendly and helpful and the little added extras (free bike hire, video hire and yoga) are a really nice bonus - what you would expect from a four star stay - however that's about where it ends for the rating. Now don't get me wrong, the rooms are clean; reasonably well maintained and the WIFI is adequate but the hotel it self is very dated - very. There is no restaurant nor room service (apart from other venues delivering) and no bar for a quiet get togeather. But probably my biggesy complaint would be the work being done on the elevators; only two work (one of those stops only at random floors I think it decides on impulse); of those two one also 'on apparent impulse' decides to not open the doors; or close them........ I understand they are "working" on them for upgrade but I feel a decent thing would have been to let prospective clients know of the problems BEFORE they made a booking. It was that bad that people were waiting up to 10 min for one to arrive and then getting in, even if it is going in the wrong direction, just so they don't have to wait anymore! To add insult to injury on TWO separate occasions when the lift did stop we were advised by the room cleaners we couldn't get in because it was full with them and their trollies!! Overall PRO's, clean, well maintained and friendly. CON's, lifts, nil food/bar, poor sleep due main road frontage and price for what you get. If honestly rated I would say a solid three star but four is just a bridge to far...
We very much enjoyed our stay at the Luana. The rooms are clean, the staff are friendly / helpful and the location is superb.Main notes to share:* Elevators - have been going through upgrades / modernization. We were reading reviews of some folks saying it took a long time and they were very slow. Over our 10 day stay, there were 3 instances that the elevators did take a long time to arrive (more than 5 minutes), but for the most part, they showed up in under 2 minutes. This may be unacceptable for some people, but if you know and are prepared for them to be slow, it's not so bad. On the day of our departure, a couple families were complaining loudly about how ridiculous it was and how unhappy they were about it. I suspect they didn't know about the situation beforehand, and if you're used to very fast elevators...yes, it can be frustrating. It didn't ruin our experience. Random: For the impatient, we were on the 14th floor and I took the stairs to see how long that would take. Approximately 3 1/2 minutes, but the faster you go, the dizzier you get.* AC / sound from the street - we don't have an AC unit at home, where we come from, so I don't know how loud or quiet these things are supposed to be. Some reviews complain of them being too loud or rattling, and at times, I suppose it can be annoying (I was just happy to be cooled off!). We opted to keep our balcony door open for the breeze at times, although at night, if the noise from the street is too much, then the AC unit works in a pinch. Earplugs, for light sleepers, perhaps.* Happy Hour - so fun! Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 5- 6pm. Very generous pours and so great to mingle with others staying at the hotel and sharing their experiences. We made a couple new Kiwi friends that we ended up going out for beers and dinner with, another night. They had entertainment (singer, uke and dancer) to keep the energy up. My favourite part, haha! They served the Kona brewery blonde and amber ale, 2 whites (pino and chardonnay), 2 reds (merlot and cab) and crackers + cheese.* Movie rentals - just for fun, free DVD rentals with pretty updated options. Great for the kids. I think they had some video games available as well. The room console only had one controller for the PS3, so no multiplayer. You might have to ask the desk if they would loan out another one.* Outdoor Yoga - Tues, Thurs, Sat and Sunday at 8am (it says to meet in the lobby at 7:45am). They provide the mats and the yoga teacher might saunter in at 8, 8:01...it's Island Time. I experienced two instructors and two different group sizes (3 people and 12 people). It's pretty random but a good experience and really nice to have this service.* Gym - small, clean and decently equipped for a total body workout. They have two treadmills, one elliptical, one bike. Rack of free weight / dumbbells (up to 50lbs) and a bench. A few machines (Leg press, leg extension, prone leg curl, row, lat pulldown, pec dec, seated bench press, roman chair, back extension). AC was on - thank god haha.* Parking - $35 per night
