Overview
The Aqua Waikiki Pearl recently completed a full hotel renovation and now features 135 freshly upgraded, spacious rooms. With the amazing transformation of this central Waikiki boutique hotel came a new name and fabulous new amenities, such as a friendly full-service concierge and private en-suite lanais. The rooms are some of the biggest in Waikiki; the one bedroom suites are a roomy 720 square feet of pure elegance, while the city view rooms are a comfortable 450 square feet. Take a few steps from the hotel and relax on Waikiki Beach, shop in the maze that is the International Marketplace, or party on Lewers Street.

Location: Central Waikiki, near the International Marketplace and two blocks from Waikiki beach.

Twenty Years At The Pearl

I cannot say enough about this extraordinary hotel. We noticed at check-in and check-out that many other guests were from other islands in Hawaii; that's a good recommendation. Graciousness, hospitality, patience, cleanliness, spacious and hospitable rooms, and LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. It's all here. I'm a flight attendant who's been traveling to Waikiki (for pleasure, not work) multiple times per year since 1997. This is the best value for money you will find, PERIOD, and a pleasure to call your home in Waikiki. I have been staying at this property since 1997. As a flight attendant, I have lots of opportunities to visit Waikiki and I've taken advantage of every one of them. Having been all over the world, my husband still says Waikiki is his "happy, beautiful place." I have recommended the Aqua Waikiki Pearl to friends, family and colleagues and they have always reported favorably. I stayed here from March 6-10 of 2017 -- my first visit in too long, and my companion's very first to Hawaii -- and the Pearl is better than it's ever, ever been. I cannot recommend the Pearl enough. For one thing, there's the location. You are a few minutes walk to the best of the beach. Next door is a small grocery; on the other side is a coffee shop. Across the street, a liquor store/grocery and Korean restaurant. A 24-hour supermarket and bus stops are within those same five minutes. The remade (and now quite glitzy, if you ask me) International Marketplace is practically on the doorstep of the Pearl. Our room, 813, was spacious, with a full kitchen and lanai. (Our leftovers from the various restaurants we visited were put to excellent use.) It was impeccably clean and we didn't see an insect on the property the whole time we were there -- amazing in the tropics. We chose to forego daily maid service, but when we saw the maid on the way in or out she was generous with a stack of towels and coffee when we asked. There's a pet-friendly policy; we didn't see a pet, nor did we ever see or smell any evidence of one, and that's as it should be. Our reservation was made last-minute (the only way an airline employee travels) and accepted graciously. We were greeted with a basket of canned juices and candies, free beach towels and beach chairs. Many of the wonderful staff members were folks I recognized from years back. Lisa, who staffs the tour desk in the lobby, was very helpful arranging our visit to Pearl Harbor. The front desk clerks Ape and Jo were extraordinary. Please accept my "mahalo" and believe me when I say that I cannot wait to return -- perhaps as soon as May -- with my husband. Fabulous.

Cheap, but don't do it.

Only good thing about this hotel is location as it's right across the street from the International Market Place. Overnight parking is $30 and for that "privilege" you will probably have to walk two blocks as they only have about 15 stalls in back of the hotel that are 1st come 1st serve - so don't count on it. This turns into a 5 block drive to come back to pick up luggage due to one way streets. Our room was like a dungeon and had stains on the carpet. We even found a left over burrito in the microwave so the cleaning crew is not first rate. It is not worth saving a few bucks to stay here.

Not great

While this was a pretty good location just behind the new International Marketplace, there were several issues. The first was the noise. Rooms at the front of the building, especially on the lower floors, are subject to trucks delivering in a loading zone from 5 am onward. The desk clerk told us the biggest complaint they have is about street noise. Although our first room at the front was large with a balcony, we moved to a smaller room at the side because of the street noise. Some of the air conditioners are super loud. Also the hotel charges $18 per day per room over and above the room rate for access to amenities that many other hotels offer as part of the room fee. These 'amenities' include coffee in the room, DVD rentals, borrowed beach chairs, and the Aqua shuttle. This fee was mandatory and not optional, so adding that to the room rate made the price not as reasonable as we'd expected. As a result, I cannot in good conscience recommend this hotel.

Consider if you are on a budget

Received a group to Hawaii and needed to stay with them at this property. they wanted "budget" and found them this. Good location on back side of Waikiki (closer to Ala Wai Canal) Street isn't as noisy as some but still can hear the garbage trucks at 4am. If you want no frills and a clean, decent room then this place is perfect. No pool, no breakfast but location is good (especially to new International Market place) and perfect to catch buses to anywhere on the island. We didn't use the scheduled shuttle to Ala Moana. Apples and all day coffee in lobby are a nice touch. Food pantry supermarket just around the corner.Standard rooms are decent sized and have coffeemaker, fridge and microwave (warmed up my leftovers from dinner just fine). I was afraid of my 4th floor room and the street noise but it was fine however I'm convinced that even if I was on the 20th floor of any hotel I would still hear the early morning garbage trucks. Front desk staff are pretty nice - didn't use the "tour desk" also in the lobby. Didn't use the game console in the room but I'm sure if I had kids they would have been all over it. Wifi was average but just bounced to my 4g connection. If you want cheap, clean, centrally located and decent sized rooms, then the Pearl is for you. If you need more amenities than listed, then I suggest a different hotel. My clients were completely satisfied as was I! I did a lot of shopping at the New Nordstrom Rack and had the best almond croissants at B. Pattiserie (a short walk away!)
