Aston at the Waikiki Banyan
- What's Included
The first thing you notice is mirrors all over the room. Make's the room look bigger but it's not the 80's anymore. The kitchen was nice but dirty. All the dishes needed to be washed. The refrigerator handle was filthy. (See photo) The bathroom was small and the shower curtain rod was rusty, (See photo) Poor maintenance all around. (IE The switch covers were loose),The wifi was insecure. And allowed pop-ups galore. We never used it. The maid service was almost non-existent. The beds were poorly made and pushed off the platform. (See photo's). Just a blah experience. We won't be back.
If you are lookin for luxury, then be prepared to pay a ton more and stay elsewhere. If you are looking for a great family value and plan to be out on the beach or in town most of the time, then this is great. It actually was clean in the room, and that apparently is saying something for Hawaii. It was really nice to have a full kitchen too. A little crowded once the murphy bed was brought down and the roll away was set up, but when you have three kids, you are used to it in a hotel room. The nitty gritty? Looks like it all depends on the room you get when talking about the details--this room needs to update the bedroom TV. A tube TV? A flat screen that size can't be over $200, even in Hawaii.
We were a bit worried about staying here after reading some of the reviews but were pleasantly surprised and enjoyed our stay. We were on the 36th floor room 3606 with fantastic views of the ocean so we didn't get street noise. The housekeeping was great - it was very clean and tidy. It is a bit old we knew that before going. The staff at the reception were very pleasant and helpful. The location was fine as it wasn't far to walk anywhere. We would recommend The Food Pantry in Kuhio Avenue as a good place to get provisions in stead of the ABC stores as cheaper and recommended by Lonely Planet guide. We would stay here again as liked the convenience of having an apartment instead of a hotel room.
We checked in an given room 3706 and could not sleep as the noise was very bad from a motor on the roof above the bed we had to change rooms and moved to a smaller room in level 14 with no view !House keeping were rude and demanded we leave room to get cleaned and front staff "min" apologised but with out feeling or care! I asked to speak to manager but he was unavailable and the supervisor had not started work yet!I have stayed here in the past but this was the last time!
After researching hotels for what seemed like weeks and weeks, we finally decided on this Aston property. We get a good discount via a travel industry rate which helped. We just returned from a week stay, 2 adults, 2 kids aged 12 and 17. PROS: Very easy check-in, conveniently located to Waikiki Beach, 3-5 minute walk to stores and beach and restaurants. Easy to get into/out of parking garage. Large suite with separated bedroom and kitchen with dishes, etc.CONS: When I booked there was NO notice on their website regarding that the pool or hot tub would be out of service for our stay. We did not find this out(even at check-in, not mentioned) until our second day when we happened to see a note in the elevator. After the pool re-opened on our 4th day, the hot tub remained close for maintenance. It is advertised that they offer pool towels AND a snack shop. Neither of these were available so we had to go to Walmart to purchase towels to use at the beach and the pool. This was disappointing to say the least. I based my extensive research on hotels that offered a pool and chose this one only to have it closed for half of our stay.Maid service: We are typically low maintenance and only require a full room clean 2-3 times during a week stay. So, with that being said, one would think that when they maid did clean, she would do a better job then what was done. She LOVED leaving washcloths and toilet paper, we had accumulated probably at least 10 washcloths during our stay. But,little things like dusting and sugar packets for the coffee were neglected. When we made our boys beds up(1 couch and I loveseat that folded out), one of the sheets had a bright yellow huge stain on the sheet which we had to return to get a clean one. One of our master bed sheets had blood spots on it. All in all, I am unsure if I would stay again. Dated rooms but convenient, hard to choose. For us though, the price was right but most people would have to incur the $20 parking fee PLUS the $20 amenity fee.
