Aston at the Waikiki Banyan
- What's Included
We stayed two nights with my adult daughter, who slept on the fold out couch. Whilst not a super modern suite, it provided all required amenities and an ocean view at a reasonable price. The location was great as we were just a few minutes walk to the beach and all the shops and restaurants. Staff were friendly and helpful. Rooms are serviced daily. Definitely value for money.
On Sunday September 25th I booked a stay at the Aston at the Waikiki Banyan in Honolulu, Hawaii for the same night. This was the last night of a trip to Hawaii with my wife and two friends why we wanted to make it a special one. Our friends who are Americans had made several nice arrangements during the trip why me and my wife wanted to return the favor and treat them with a nice last hotel stay by using a free hotel night earned as Hotels customers. We found the Aston which was discounted from USD 300/night, it looked very nice from the pictures, it was in our desired area, and it had received good reviews. With the discount the price was USD 180 which we paid using our points and direct payment through Hotels. After booking it we we're frankly thrilled to take our friends there. We arrived after flying in from another island around 7 pm. The entrance didn't look quite as expected from the pictures, but was fine. Already in the hallway to our room we got a bad feeling as it did not at all reflect the standard we expected from our booking. Entering the room we got a very unpleasant surprise. The room was far from prepared for guests with dishes in the sink, unmade beds, trash left in both the kitchen and the bathroom, and generally not cleaned. It frankly looked like a dump. Even worse, though, aside from the room not at all being prepared for our arrival, it was absolutely nothing like the pictures in terms of standard. It gave the impression of an old, outworn, dark xxx rather than anything else. When we got back to the reception the representative explained that the "hotel" consists of privately owned condominiums that are being rented out sort of as a hotel activity. Booking it through Hotels marketed as a hotel, this was not what we expected. Getting keys to a new room, our friends tried to comfort us saying that as the standard of condominiums can differ maybe this room would be nicer. It wasn't. Although the room this time was prepared, it far from reflected neither the pictures nor the price. We felt completely fooled and this was not at all how we've planned to spend our time in Hawaii before our afternoon flight the day after. We went back to the reception and explained that we simply couldn't stay. When asking for a refund, they informed us that the resort fee of USD 20/night would be refunded by them, but that the hotel charge would be between us and Hotels. When asking for our USD 20 parking fee back, they informed that the parking was separate from the hotel and something we would need to take with that company. So we did, but as that company had nothing to do with the hotel, it couldn't refund us although we only had our car parked for 40 min. Also a very unexpected turn of events as the information on Hotels stated parking for the hotel. As it was getting late and all we wanted was to get the situation resolved, we called the Hilton that has several resorts in the area and managed to get a room at one of the beach resorts. It was more than we had planned to pay, however, affordable if comparing with the ordinary rate for the Aston, and with a completely different standard both for the room and other hotel facilities. We've been quite frequent Hotels customers over the passed year, and have stayed at hotels with a quite diverse range in terms of pricing, standard, and US locations. Never before have we felt deceived or fooled, and yet we did quite a bit of research before making the booking in question.Due to the above, we expect to be refunded the amount charged for the booking, and also credited the free hotel night which value was used. Although we understand that Hotels would have no legal obligation to do so, we would also appreciate to be refunded the USD 20 parking fee (amount confirmed on Hotels sight for the Aston). Considering the additional charges for hotel and other parking, time wasted, and overall inconvenience of all this, it seems like a fair request.
We stayed here for three nights, while the location is great the room we had was a little dated and was not the cleanest, however it did have it's own kitchen which was handy. We were in tower 2 on the 36th floor so the view was fabulous. the location is great with only a 5 min walk to the beach. The staff were friendly, there is a little food shop and café type place on site which is handy. The pool and spa area is nice so overall not a bad place, the only downfall was our bedding arrangement with a king bed and a pull out sofa which was really uncomfortable. The hotel does charge a $20 per day fee for wifi, dvd's and a paper which I found to be a little steep as the only thing we really used was the wifi and we stayed in two hotels on the mainland which gave us free wifi without a charge. Would I stay again, probably but would make sure I asked for a different bedding arrangement next time.
This is an older style hotel and apartment block. I was very disappointed for the price we paid. We have normally stayed in an ocean front hotel in an Ocean front or view room at either Sheraton Waikiki, Outrigger Waikiki or Hilton Hawaiian Village - so we traded location for a larger room with a 1 bedroom apartment. I wished we hadn't far prefer being in a smaller room with greater facilities, right on the ocean front but that's me. The hotel/apartment is old and worn looking. We did this last minute via VBRO - so although a renovated apartment - it felt dirty and was small. in fact so small that in the middle of the night when I went to the toilet I slipped and fell backwards and hit my head on the bath. Dark, dingy corridors and dark reception area - not warm and welcoming like you would expect. On the plus side does come with a car space, the pool is a decent size, the coffee shop at the bottom does great coffees and you can find good deals via VBRO - but as ours was last minute wasn't such a great deal.I would not go back and would compromise on size and go for a hotel room with 2 x queen size beds and fold out sofa at Outrigger - just a step away from the Ocean.
The unit has been updated with new stove, flooring and microwave. Has view of Manoa, Ala Wai Canal, golf course and of course the beach on the Lanai!!!🙏🙏🙏 the elevators are high speed. Pool area has been renovated!!
