Outrigger Reef on the Beach
- What's Included
This was our third time at Outrigger Reef so it is obvious we like this place. From arrival to departure we were treated wonderfully at all times by staff who obviously all share a culture of looking after guests and making them feel special. I am not good at remembering staff names but there were no exceptions to the ohana treatment. The entry area and foyer are spacious and attractive and open onto the pool area. After being welcomed as we stepped from the taxi we were directed past the pool to the check-in desk where we were greeted with a cool tropical juice and friendly and efficient processing. Qantas arrives early in the day so our room was not quite ready. The Bell captain took care of our luggage and we spent an hour or so sitting in the Shorebird Bar having lunch and a drink looking over the beach and Pacific Ocean. A great start to the holiday. Our Deluxe Ocean View room was spacious and comfortable, the bathroom had a separate entry area with hand basin etc., the furniture was of a high standard and there was good wardrobe space. The view sitting on the balcony was very good - looking over the ocean ahead and to the right and looking over the pool to the left.Over the course of our stay we ate lunch and dinner at the Shorebird and ate breakfast, lunch and dinner plus poolside snacks from the Kani Ka Pila. All good meals at reasonable prices (for a hotel).Hawaiian music is played at the Kani Ka Pila most days from 3:00-5:00 and every evening from 6:00-9:00 and you can either sit at a table or just rest by the pool and listen to it.Outrigger Reef is at the western end of Waikiki proper right next to Lewers Street and Waikiki Walk. The shops and restaurants start right across the road and extend in all directions. It is only a few minutes stroll to the hub of activity located along Kalakaua Avenue. However, once you walk back through the entrance to Outrigger Reef you are away from the hubbub and immediately in its peaceful settings. We like the Outrigger Reef and will stay here again when we return to Hawaii. Mahalo and aloha until next time.
So here I am again! Nine months later and I re-booked the Outrigger Reef as last visit was so good. Not so lucky with views this time - with our exchange rate, the standard room is still over AUD300/night. As I like to visit Waikiki often, unless there's a good deal to be found, I'm usually looking for the best rate over a view! Room was pleasant enough and very clean and comfortable. Location is great and the service around the pool is fantastic.Unfortunately, when we first arrived, the 'lady' at the front desk made us feel quite awful. She spoke to us condescendingly. It was as if 'she' was memorising a script and any deviation from it (by us asking questions) was a big no no! "Like I was going to explain!" 'She' did all our paperwork, took my credit card number etc etc. I merely then asked, "does that mean our room is ready?" Well! "No, the room is NOT ready, THAT'S why I asked you for your phone number so that I could CALL you when it was ready!" I should have had my crystal ball and known this! Did not wish to ask anything of her after this interaction. When we returned later, we purposely let people in front of us in the queue to avoid dealing with this particular person! Shame.
The Outrigger Reef is the perfect location a modern hotel, lots of shops and restaurants close by as well as the ability to walk out onto Waikiki beach from the hotel.. James at the check in is an absolute Star after getting us into a higher floor (for a nominal fee) taking the time to go through the different room price structure..
You really can't beat this place! We stayed here a couple of years ago at a city view room and loved it. This time we splurged for the oceanfront and had another wonderful stay. Having the beach right out the back door is just wonderful. The staff are incredibly friendly. You're greeted with fresh juice upon check in. Our room was large and clean. Joanna was our housekeeper and she was just delightful. The oceanfront room comes with Voyager 47 privileges which we used quite a bit. It provided our breakfast all but one day (because we wanted to try somewhere else). We also enjoyed the free drinks and apps at happy hour a number of days, which helps justify the cost of the oceanfront room. I love the location (right in Waikiki but a little bit secluded from the busiest area). We dined at the Shorebird a few times (great food and drinks!) and the Kani Ka Pila Grill a number of times as well. Their live entertainment was so enjoyable. The parking and the connection fees are high but I compared numbers with other nearby hotels and you really can't do better. For the best rate, sign up for their emails and use their coupon codes to book directly through their website. After I initially booked, I received a coupon code and they honored the cheaper price. They are a great hotel and a fantastic company.
We stayed on the 9th floor ocean front. What a magnificent view! The 9th and 10th floors had a separate lift which was very easy and quick for us to access. On arrival the cool towel and juice was a refreshing welcome after being on a plane for 10 hours. The process was very quick, our room wasn't ready but we could store our bags while we went and explored waiting for our room to be ready. The check in staff member told us he would contact housekeeping to prioritise our room.It wasn't long and we were able to enter our beautiful room overlooking the ocean. Within minutes our bags arrived and this lovely gentlemen explained anything that we were unsure about. It was so relaxing listening to the waves below and I'm glad I paid the extra cost to have ocean front. The two restaurants were lovely to eat in. Our first night there we ate in the Ocean House Restaurant, it was lovely. It was our anniversary so enjoyed a special meal. They took our photo at no cost for our celebration. Wait staff were wonderful and friendly. We also ate in the Shore Bird restaurant, it was very easy going and we enjoyed cooking our steak and the salad bar was fantastic. The pool is huge and we had no problems getting a lounge. The music from the grille area was lovely. We also included the Voyager 47 club option, this was amazing! Every morning we went to the terrace for a light breakfast and snack before heading off. In the evening we were served a variety of wines and local beers. All the food was delicious and more than we expected. It was a lovely touch for our special vacation. The resort fee charged everyday was for the wi-fi and included other things like the trolley service, we took full advantage of this and enjoyed a wonderful time exploring the Waikiki area. All in all, I would definitely recommend this hotel as it is centrally located and had everything you needed. Great staff and service.
