Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach
- What's Included
I treated myself to an extravagant birthday gift of a long weekend in Hawaii. I did my research spending a few hours exploring hotel and room options, locations, costs. I selected the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort. It's located right on a beautiful and swimmable beach and is well situated on the Waikiki strand. It has a nice pool and adequate seating. Holiday decorations were festive. Reservations staff were nice. A glitch in my (paid for) Orbitz hotel registration caused the hotel to not have my reservation -- a 1-bedroom beachfront suite. They found a comparable room on the 7th floor...however the view was so-so and it had termites. Wood piles were near a credenza and lamp table. Made me very uncomfortable and suggested the room wasn't used - or cleaned - often. When I needed late checkout I was told my room was already reserved and I'd have to switch rooms if I wanted to stay - at $25 per additional hour. Other disappointments: The room air conditioning is poor. A noisy unit never really cooled down the rooms. I splurged on a 1-bedroom oceanfront room for my 60th, paying well over what I normally spend. I expected higher quality furnishings, more amenities and NO TERMITES -- or at least no evidence of them! Elevators are frustratingly slow. There was no cold beer at the lobby bar on a Saturday afternoon; I couldn't order an appetizer until 5pm. I wasn't allowed to take my beer to my room. All these little things added up to BIG DISAPPOINTMENT. I travel a lot. I wouldn't stay here again.
Room overlooked the pool and beach, and wow what a great view!!!loved the atmosphere here, great choice of bars and Had a wonderful night at the blue note jazz room ... right in town with free transport to things.. loved it and would def recommend
We (3 friends) stayed at the Outrigger early December 2016 on level 4. Great check-in. The lady was very informative, helpful and welcoming (far better service than the Westin Maui from where we just came). The hotel is the PERFECT location. Close enough to Diamond Head and also close enough to all the shops down the Waikiki Beach Walk and Saratoga Road and directly across from The International Market Place. Plenty of awesome food places nearby like the Cheesecake Factory which is practically next door. The beach location is spot on too. Many catamarans and boats pull up directly out the front for various sorts of tours and the beach is always crowded but the spot out the front is just right, not too many people or waves or rocks unlike the patch closer to Diamond Head. The decor is very traditional throughout the hotel and inside the rooms. Woody and floral. So if you're looking for modern this may not be the place for you. Could do with some updating like others have said but I quite liked the Hawaiian feel. My only issue was it had a little damp/musty smell. Wasn't too strong and certainly not enough to complain to Guest Services about but when it was closed up throughout the day, upon your return you could smell it straight away. As soon as we got back to the room I flung open the doors and it was then fine. Pretty sure it was coming from the heavy drapes. Noise insulation wise - from the bed I couldn't hear my friends when they were taking a shower or in the bathroom and vice versa. Couldn't hear any noises from other rooms either so was built well for privacy. The room was a bit too small for three people (especially when pulling out the sofa bed) however it's a perfect size for 2. I loved the shower products - had a nice tropical coconut scent.I wouldn't recommend using guest services to book tours. I founds some offices nearby, I went to the one nearby on Uluniu Road (Hawaii Tour and Travels) which was maybe a one minute walk and I did a Pearl Harbor tour for half the price. And booked Waikele tour there too whereas the hotel would just get you to book your own shuttle from the lobby. The pool isn't great (small) but you have the best beach metres away so it isn't an issue at all. Love Dukes (especially the Hula pie) but getting late in the afternoon they start putting out tables and chairs for Dukes on the deck. Then you end up having to wander through people drinking and eating if you're using the beach/pool around sunset. Gets a little awkward. You actually have the spa just sitting there metres away from a table. As such there's a lot of hustle and bustle and it gets a bit hectic at both the front and the back-end of the hotel. If you're looking for a hotel that's close to everything and has a lot of energy with some great music (Dukes has live music playing at night), this is for you. If you want something quiet and relaxed, I would suggest looking elsewhere.
My oldest and my youngest daughter and I went for a girls trip. We were all VERY satisfied with everything from the welcome we received right down to the cab hailing service we received when we left. I loved the décor and the old looking, heavy wood furniture in the room. The room itself was very roomy and comfortable with a large enough bathroom that we all could get ready at the same time. More then adequate storage space for all of our belongings. I really liked the secure elevator system which provided added piece of mind that strangers are not walking around. The hospitality room that was provided before we headed to the airport was clean and well stocked. Housekeeping was terrific and always greeted us with kindness. Cannot wait to go back!
Nothing wrong with this place- it was a nice room and the beach is super close.I just didn;t think it was super special. We stayed in a small boutique part of the time and though farther from beach- it had more ammenities and style.
