The Modern Honolulu
- What's Included
Primarily booked this Hotel due to its close proximity to the shopping Centre in Honolulu (Alamoana - a visit to the shopping centre is worth it for many high-end brands) as it is within walking distance, however, was glad I didn't have to spend too much time in the room!!! Small and cheaply furnished with paint peeling off the ceiling in the bathroom (room 711 - for the Manager's information). Even the carpet felt 'damp' underfoot. The initial greeting at the Hotel was great - the Concierge is extremely willing and helpful, the front desk staff were professional (although our room wasn't ready and we were told that they would call us when it was, however, never received a call from them), the air conditioning in the public areas and hallways is beyond freezing and the room décor needs a full renovation (they have tried hard, however, poorly done). Feel the rooms are way too over-priced for what you receive - I suggest you shop around and don't worry about proximity to shopping centre as there are buses that run from every Hotel all day long! The bed is really hard - mattress on a plank of hardwood (which extends out from the mattress and I hurt my leg on it), the pillows are hard, the blanket is threadbare, the complimentary toiletries in the bathroom very minimal and the bathroom is pokey and very small - with just a louvre screen between it and the bedroom. We actually checked out as early as we could!Did eat at the 'fine-dining' restaurant downstairs and enjoyed ourselves - food/service - very good, so this improved the restaurant's standing a little.
Loved the rooms - The king bed was really comfortable and there was lots of light and a beach feel to the rooms. The architecture and design elements around the hotel complimented the nomenclature nicely. The service was really friendly and uncomplicated - the front counter staff were always beaming when we talked to them . We are generally low key and prefer our privacy, so we didn't need anything elaborate but felt genuinely welcomed. The food was better than I expect at hotels - we tried both the pool bar and the restaurant Ravish. They both exceeded expectations for hotel fare and were reasonably priced. The pool bar food was considerably better than I've experienced elsewhere and is great value for money. The pool is small - there's not a lot of room here to swim or relax. But with Waikiki nearby - though perhaps 5 minutes more than preferable - I'd prefer to go there. The Study is NOT a whisky/whiskey bar; it's just a bar that has whisky. So the whole hidden gem, speak-easy thing is a great concept. They served really nice food but were understaffed. I was particularly excited to find they were a "specialist" whisky bar. But alas, this simply isn't true. They do have a nice collection, mostly north-american bourbons and rye. The scotches are all staples, nothing extraordinary and a couple of the usual Japanese ones. The bartender butchered an Old Fashioned - all ice-chips, which a novice would understand dilutes the spirit too quickly and loses any distinguishing characters of the whisky or the bitters. Not trusting a cocktail, I switched to neat whisky, which was served in a tumbler, not a tulip glass you'd expect. It was such a shame that such really simple elements were overlooked and detracted from the atmosphere and the food.
We stayed for 6 nights in early November in a marina view suite. This is a terrific hotel, staff are friendly - always a hello from reception when you pass if not busy with guests. We found the bed comfortable, and room was relaxing with enough space to move around in (this was a 1 bedroom suite). We had room service and ate at The Grove, service great and food tasty - we enjoyed the cocktails too! A 5 minute walk to the beach, about 15 minutes to central Waikiki, 10 minutes to Ala Moana shopping centre. Two pools - we didn’t try the adults only sunset pool, but enjoyed the sunrise pool and drinks service. All round - a terrific stay for us.
Great quick stay at The Modern! Greeted with aloha by both Sean the valet, then Cammy at the front desk. The room was ready upon arrival: Bonus! Pool was relaxing , wonderful lunch at The Grove. Love the vibe, service from all staff was 5star. Laina and everyone we came in contact with were so friendly and positive! Definitely shared the Aloha Spirit!!! One night was not enough!!!
We stayed in ocean view suite, which front desk upgraded. Room was very clean and comfortable, even the sofa bed was also very comfy. My wife met the best spa ever she had in US, we really enjoyed breakfast at poolside restaurant. Great place to stay and rest.
