Maingate Lakeside Resort
- What's Included
We stayed for 14 nights from 14th November to 28th November, and having read some awful reviews beforehand my partner and I were a bit concerned, but our stay wasn't nearly as bad as what we thought it was going to be and we would definitely stay here again. This is going to be a long review but I want to list the pros and cons and hopefully alleviate any concerns people may have. I'll start with the pros first which aren't ranked in any particular order: 1) The management and reception staff (in particular Rebecca and Unique) who welcomed us and handled a complaint of ours efficiently and professionally, and helped us with other things directions to restaurants, taxi numbers etc. They were very helpful and friendly. 2) The all you can eat buffet breakfast served from 7-11am daily in the greenhouse restaurant was really good, filling and very reasonably priced (around $7 each excluding tax and gratuity, with kids under 10 eating free). Just what you need to set you up before a long day in the theme parks. Also the servers are really lovely and welcoming. 3) The deli store/Pizza Hut was a god send and we ordered food and bought snacks from here several times. It is open daily from 11am till 10pm, and a refillable soda cup can be bought here for just $10 each which allows for unlimited refills for the duration of your stay (definitely worth it)! Really good burgers and fries (cooked by a gentleman known as M.B on his name badge), literally the best burgers we had the whole holiday. There is also a very lovely, helpful lady who works in the store called Martha who we enjoyed chatting to. 4) There are 3 pools I believe, one is heated which is the one we used as it was nearest our room. The pool itself and surrounding area, furniture and garden is kept very clean and tidy. There is also a projection screen which sometimes shows films at night depending on if there's enough demand for it. We watched two films during our stay and it was a nice touch to sit by the pool and watch a movie after exhausting yourself at the parks all day! 5) The location of the hotel is spot on for pretty much everything. We stayed in another hotel in Kissimmee last year which left us feeling a bit isolated, but the Maingate is literally opposite a Walgreens and just a stones throw from all you can eat buffet restaurants like the Golden Corral and Red Lobster to name a few. Also there's a Wendy's, Burger King, Denny's and a Taco Bell a few minutes walk away. 6) The FREE shuttle services offer daily transport to Universal, Sea World and Disney. See picture for scheduled pick up and drop off times for each park. I personally found the shuttle service from this hotel to Disney far better and more frequent than where we stayed last year. It's really useful if you've decided against car hire, as most shuttles will pick up from Disney no later than 6pm! But here the latest pick up from Disney is 11pm which allows for the nighttime fireworks etc to be enjoyed without worrying about paying huge taxi fares to get back to the hotel. Just a side note though, if you do want to travel to and from Disney outside of the scheduled drop off and pick up times, and you don't want to spend too much in taxi fares then take a Mears taxi to Animal Kingdom. It is the nearest Disney park to the hotel (about a 5 min drive), and will cost approx between $10-15 as opposed to $40+ to the other Disney parks. Once at Animal kingdom simply use the free Disney transport to get around to the other parks. Also the hotel is on the list of pick up areas for free transport to Lake Buena Vista Factory stores, and it is also a pick up point for most paid for excursion and tour companies, such as Kennedy Space Center, Wild Florida, Busch Gardens etc. All in all the location and shuttle services make the hotel an ideal base for anyone, especially those who haven't rented a car. The cons:1) The rooms need some serious updating and repair work on fixtures and fittings and the decor leaves a lot to be desired. BUT, they are clean, and contrary to what people have said on here there are housekeepers and they do come in and leave fresh towels etc. You're not paying for the ritz so don't expect it! If like my partner and I you're going to Orlando to go and have the best time of your life (because it is an amazing city), and all you want is a no frills clean room where you can sleep, hot water so you can shower and a place to eat a good breakfast with fantastic, friendly staff, and complimentary shuttle services in a great location for proximity to Orlando's main attractions then go with an open mind and enjoy yourself! You're going to be in Orlando, are you really going to be staying in your hotel room all day?! Just as a side note, I understand that in some cultures it is not customary to tip those who provide you with a service. However, in America it is, and it is expected, especially if you've received excellent service. Please, if this concept is new to you then consider researching why tipping is the norm in the states and just who you should tip and how much (as a general guide). I say this because aside from witnessing people not tipping waiters/waitresses, my partner and I were completely dumbfounded that people were gladly using the FREE shuttle services to the parks but were not tipping the driver! It is customary to tip the driver between $1-2 per person and this will often be displayed somewhere on the bus to avoid any confusion. Of course you don't have to tip but why wouldn't you? It's either $1-2 to the driver who has got you to the parks for free, or pay for your own car hire, petrol and parking? Come on!!
Location good but you would need taxi service to international drive, large florida mall. Taxi drivers wonderful. Having said that very easy to get around. Lots of nice places to eat. Room very clean, comfortable. Bathroom very clean. Rooms cleaned daily with replacement towels unless you decline to have room serviced. Staff wonderful. Hotel restaurant very good but basic. But still nice to eat in if you do not want to go out.
Honestly i can not understand how people can write bad reviews about this hotel.Obviously it is not a 5* hotel, but for this price... It is WOW.I saw some pictures in tripadvisor and i was a bit afraid but the hotel is just great, clean, and looking good. They even offer free shuttle to Disney!Nothing to complain about, i would highly recommend this Hotel.
The outside looks beautiful, but the inside of our room was not the greatest quality. It definitely could use some updates, and better cleaning of the bathroom as well. We just slept here one night, and honestly looked forward to moving to the next hotel.
Office Staff was VERY RUDE!! They insulted a tourist in front of other guest checking in. The guy asked for a receipt and the clerk loudly and rudely stated "I don't speak Portuguese! I don't care if you stay here or not and you can not have a receipt until you check out.I dont have time for this I will get the manager" Once the manager arrived I thought things would get better. Sadly NO she stated "I don't speak Portuguese! does anybody in here know Portuguese?" All I could think was how nasty it was to treat someone that way. I couldn't believe the level of disrespect they had for the guest. Also the room was disgusting the carpet hasn't been clean in YEARS!! The ceilings have mold, the area around the fridge is dirty and the sheets have hairs ewwww. This place is NOT A RESORT!! DON'T STAY HERE EVER!!!
