Aston Kona by the Sea
- What's Included
If you are looking for a place that is very chill that is also near town this is your place. There is no beach but there is a sandy area right on the water. The grounds sit on the ocean and the views are great! There is a nice pool area and some barbecues on the beach to use. The rooms we rented were great and very clean. We were able to cook some meals and save money. Kona coffee in the morning on the deck was priceless. I would totally stay at this place again!
The one star is for the nice paintings on the walls. Otherwise, the property stinks…literally! My room smelled like wet dog and urine. It was horrible and unpleasant. We were hoping that by opening the glass door and having the fans on, the odor would leave. The first couple of days we were traveling with our friends and came back late in the evening. The third night was unbearable so I called the front desk. They said I should talk to the manager the next morning but they will send up housekeeping to see if they can fix the problem. The housekeeper gave me a generic brand of Lysol and said good night. I sprayed so much that I was a couple of sprays short of asphyxiating myself! The next morning, the manager told us that there weren’t any other rooms available that night. A room would become available the next day. My husband decided that it was a gamble to move just in case the other rooms are the same or worse. So, we declined the move. We finished out our stay in that lousy room. We were out spending time with our friends who luckily had the hindsight to stay at another property. We stayed by them as much as possible to avoid coming back to our room.If the stench wasn’t enough, there were other problems as well. The utensils and dishes weren’t very clean. The toaster was rusty & broken. The tea kettle was rusty inside and disgusting. The dryer lint screen was rusty and covered in a green mess. The website specifies housekeeping daily but what they really mean is that they come every day to make the beds, provide fresh towels and coffee. The kitchen is left dirty as are the bathrooms. They clean thoroughly every FIFTH day. The hotel sign is on the road so customers can see where to enter. However, the sign reads “Kona by the Sea” not “Aston Kona by the Sea”. Many other properties have a similar name which was very confusing. We finally found the property by calling for directions. The sign is small so pay attention. At night, the sign is green which is good because you would pass right by it. And finally, the icing on the cake….my husband put his bath towel over the shower and the shower rod came crashing down! We could’ve ended up in the emergency room.
Rented a 2 bedroom oceanfront condo. It had all the facilities like kitchenette, washer+dryer and air conditioning. You can see the sunset right from your room! This property has a great swimming pool too. Since it is located on Alii Drive, all the activities are just around the corner. There is also a shopping marketplace closeby (shaved ice, coconut water, ice cream, food etc).
We had booked a one bedroom suite but got the 2 bedroom which meant it was huge. Had full kitchen facilities, 2 bathrooms, big dining and living area with comfy couches and a television. We found it very helpful having the washer and dryer as we were halfway through our trip and were in need of some laundry facilities. Did get a DVD out one night from the hotels collection which is a nice option to have.Paying extra for the ocean front view was priceless in our minds - it is so picturesque and totally adds to your experience. In terms of location you were a bit out of the main city hub but a 5 minute taxi at around $10 sorts that or you could walk for about 20-30 minutes and you're there. There's a nice little marketplace that's not even a 2 minute walk from the hotel - called whale of a crepe and we did breakfast down there which was very tasty. There's also a little deli in the other direction which is handy for drinks and the odd snack. The beds were pretty firm and really could do with an upgrade. The decor is pretty dated and housekeeping came daily and did an ok job. Quite concerning to come back one afternoon and they hadn't pulled our door completely closed - reception seemed pretty relaxed about it and weren't fazed.Check in seemed to require a lot of time sharing info about the hotel which didn't feel necessary - particularly if you've had multiple long flights! Check out was a lot more simple and efficient though.Didn't use the public saltwater pool as it wasn't overly appealing and the pool was ok if you needed to cool off. The beach isn't suitable for swimming with all the rocks and coral.
This was a very nice finish to our vacation. We decided to stay in this ocean front condo for the last 3 nights and couldn't be happier. The condo was very nice and modern and had a great view. Their is no beach on this property, but it does have ocean access. We did see a person swimming and a few surfers and boogie boarders. This property has a pool, jacuzzi, and sandy area to sit and BBQ. Also has convenient/easy parking. The staff was also very helpful and friendly.
