Aston Kona by the Sea
- What's Included
A very nice place to stay but a little dated and two miles out of town. The room was large and very comfortable with a good sized kitchen. We had a nice balcony with a terrific view of the waves crashing on the rocks. There is a nice sized pool. A real plus was an in room washer and drier. We ere only spending a quick night and this would have been a better place to stay for a longer visit.
Another great trip to the Big Island with Kona by the Sea as our host. We were only two travelers this time and so this was our first time in a 1 Bedroom, Room 311. Well kept and all of the items were up to date and in great shape. The facility is in great shape and close enough to town to get there in 5 minutes but far enough that you are not caught up in all the noise and traffic. The front desk staff are amazing and always willing to get you extra towels, soaps, or whatever you might need. The office is open long hours (unusual for a condo set up) and so availability is great if you need them. Be aware that there is no beach at the resort but a great sandy area along the shore with a mix of sun and shade to meet your preference (or current level of sunburn!). Also the pool is well maintained and cleaned constantly. Great spot to launch your exploration of the Big Island! Recommended eating - Breakfast - Green Flash, Coffee Shack and pastries at Evolution, Lunch - Ultimate Burger and sandwiches to go from the deli next door since you will be at the beach or on an adventure anyway, and Dinner - Habenaros Grill (just off Alii Drive) and the salads at Kona Brewing Company.
We stayed here (mum, husband and I) from 3-6 July 2017 and fell in love with unit # 312 and the location. So much so that we are coming back 30 October to 7 November and have requested the same unit!Unit 312 was tastefully decorated and very well equipped for a stay in fact it was just like being at home (minus the cold weather and wonderful vista). Whilst it wasn't brand spanking new in the bathrooms (tad dated and warn) it was very very tidy and clean - we had no complaints whatsoever with the standard of the unit. Kudos to the maids/cleaning staff who do a wonderful job as everything was extremely clean. The kitchen was very well equipped with pots & pans, utensils, crockery, glasses, bowls & cutlery that made it very easy to prepare and cook all of our meals. Mum also wanted me to comment that there were plenty of coat hangers (whilst maybe a small thing for some) that just goes to show it's a home away from home not just a place to stay. The check in experience was fast and easy (though do be prepared that 3pm is check-in time and they stick to that time). The instructions (site map provided) to get to the unit was clear and reception ladies make you feel very welcome. Having come from winter in New Zealand the minute we stepped into our unit and onto the lanai and saw the amazing beach front views we were just in awe. Helped by the wonderful climate as well! Unit 312 is marketed as beach front and it is beach front, well worth the extra cost (in our opinion). We looked down upon the pool and spa pool area as well as to the ocean and small sand area (see the photo's I've attached). The entire resort was very well kept and tidy, a credit to the ground staff. We were also impressed at the cleanliness of the BBQs until we realised that each morning a ground staff person was out there cleaning them along with sweeping the paths and pool area. Credit to them they do a very thorough job.The main bedroom (good size and comfortable king-size bed) is beach front facing with access onto the lanai and the second bedroom is the opposite end of the unit facing the road (but well back from the road). Mum said she couldn't hear any traffic noise and her room was also a good size with two single beds and good size bath/shower combo as well a TV. Whilst there was a dining table and sofas and another TV in the lounge/dining area of the apartment we only sat on these once to try them out (very comfortable) as all of our time was spent on the lanai. There was a table and 4 chairs and a lounger (that I hogged)! The location was great, about 20 minute drive from Kona Airport and about 5 minutes outside of Kona itself. We went to KTA supermarket (about 10 minute drive the opposite way to Kona) which was ok and we got what we needed, though have to say not as great as Foodland Farms in Waikiki but still sufficient.I researched so many different resorts to stay at which I'm sure all are good, but I was extremely pleased to have chosen Aston Kona by the Sea and really couldn't fault it. Even though the unit was overlooking the pool, the noise wasn't intrusive at all and by 10pm the pool was cleared so no late night noise at all. Whilst there was a bus that you could catch outside the resort to take you into Kona we didn't use this as we had a rental car. Whilst you do not need a rental car as you can bus or taxi to the shops we found it a lot easier and convenient having the car. Great choice to say on the Big Island, if you are undecided I hope this review helps somewhat.
I have stayed at AKBy the Sea several times over the years and always come back! The condos are well designed for ocean front experience and it always delivers! Love sleeping to the roar of the ocean. The furnishings and kitchen are very accommodating and this last trip, we cooked a lot for a large hungry family. The grill areas are very good and we actually had group meals right there at the beach tables. We had 5 condos and 15 people for a week. Cannot say enough how utterly pleased we are with this property as well as the amazing staff. Housekeepers are ready to help in any way. The price is more than good for this ideal setting close to Kailua Kona. We will return!
We stayed here and had an amazing view of the ocean. The location is close enough to Kona town and there is a little market (no groceries) across the street. We like that there is a little sand by the sea wall since there are very few beaches in the Kona area. The best place to snorkel is 5 or so minutes south at Kahaluu Beach Park (black sand beach, showers, parking, pick-nick tables and bathrooms). It wasn't too pricey, not the most fancy of a place, but clean and comfortable. Staff was friendly and responsive to requests. I would say it stands out, but it looks very much like 90% of the other places in the area, but it was also priced in-line with those other places.
