Aston Kona by the Sea
- What's Included
We stayed for a week at this property and were very pleased overall. The staff was very gracious and helpful at all times. The view from our one-bedroom condo was perfect. The property is well-located with shops and restaurants nearby. We were there at a fairly peak time of year (just after Christmas and during New Year's) and yet had no problems finding chairs at the pool or on their small beach....something we have often struggled with at large resorts in places such as Mexico.A couple of small negatives: (1) Be aware that the beach area is quite small with very limited access to the sea, as it is quite rocky all around. We were un-bothered by this, but others might want more beach.(2) Our unit (#109) definitely showed its age in some ways: pipes groaned heavily when hot water was first turned on; there was some rust staining around the bathroom sinks; carpet showed wear; sheets on the bed upon arrival were stained; hair dryer in one of the bathrooms was broken. All of that being said, each issue -- when brought to the attention of the staff -- was taken care of promptly and efficiently, and we left with a very good feeling about this property and would definitely stay there again. We reveled in the views and appreciated the quiet it offered.
This hotel / condo building has a wonderful staff with many rooms facing the ocean. Our apartment / hotel room was as advertised and had a very nice kitchen to do meals in that we wanted. The beds were excellent; the AC was great, and all the other amenities were as advertised. There are one or two stores / restaurants nearby that are walkable for simple items to help you in your needsI think the only thing to mention was the bathrooms could use an upgrade, but were totally functional. Overall, I think this was excellent value for what we got, and thus I would rate it highly.
My husband and I stayed here for a week in Nov 2017 with our two school-age kids and his parents in a 2 bedroom, 2 bath oceanfront property. I am a little torn on the rating because we seemed to encounter some problems with the unit, but the staff was so kind and immediately problem-solving that it seems cruel to ding them on the issues. We were on a big box retailer package so I was concerned that we would get treated poorly, but the staff is the real gem at this place. This is an older property and the units are individually owned, which means they are individually maintained and can vary in quality. When we arrived, the room reserved for us had not been cleaned (which we discovered when moving things up to the room), and we were shown to another room, which was frankly not as nicely furnished and had a mildewed carpet that had seen better days. The staff was kind enough to allow us to put our perishable groceries in the fridge before we went out for a couple hours to let them finish cleaning the unit we liked better (Room 106, if you're tracking). The staff profusely apologized and gave us a box of chocolates for our trouble. The unit itself was spacious and clean, providing things like dishwasher detergent, laundry soap, daily coffee and creamers in addition to shampoo, conditioner, and soap. If you're having six people, as we did, make sure you look up the floor plan online to see if you can live with it. The bathroom and bedroom on the ocean is not very private: sliders separate it from the living room, and in our unit there were no walls between the bathroom and bedroom--make sure you're comfortable with whoever is sleeping on the sofa bed wandering into a bedroom in the middle of the night if they need a bathroom. The ocean front is truly ocean front; if you just want to watch the ocean all day, the location can't be beat. The views are beautiful and you can sit on the lanai and enjoy yourself. The pool is well maintained and we saw turtles off the rocks. The kitchen seemed reasonably well stocked with supplies and glasses and the grills by the pool were immaculately clean. My kids found dust under some furniture but kids investigate every single corner and cranny of a room. They enjoyed the rental DVDs. The air conditioning was extremely effective and had a neat feature where it would turn off if you had the doors to the lanai open. Housekeeping was great but erratic--we are accustomed to hotels being cleaned in the morning between 10am and 2pm, and we were surprised one day at 3:30PM with housekeeping knocking to clean the room. Covered parking was a good plus. Our dryer didn't work, which was a problem when we discovered it, but the staff gave us a key to the unit next door (which was unoccupied) to use their washer and dryer, so it was a mild irritation but not a deal-breaker. There seemed to be a fair amount of renovations going on with the elevator and the electrical systems, but we would always have a letter under our door to explain what was happening and what to expect. We stayed here in 2003, and at that time our issue with this location was the smokers; we couldn't enjoy the lanai because there was a smoker near us and the cigarette smoke was awful. Boy has that changed! The smoking area is at the edge of the road, far from the units, and the one morning we smelled smoking from our lanai, another person (who we assume is a year-round resident) was wandering the property asking us if we were smoking or if we'd seen smokers since smoking was strictly forbidden. Aside from one faint whiff that the self-appointed smoking police were on (followed up by actual hotel staff), we didn't smell any smokers when we were there, which was super. Finally, our departure flight was at 9PM, so we asked for a late check out time, and the staff told us we could stay until 6PM. We didn't stay that late but goodness, I was expecting them to give us an hour or two, not a whole extra day. Some of us were coming down with a cold and so it was lovely to have the down time in the condo for that last day. The kindness and generosity of the staff was very much appreciated.Bottom line: if you're looking for the luxury of a Kohala resort, this is not for you. But if you're looking for a clean, convenient place with people who will really bend over backwards to help you out, this is a great spot. Even with things that didn't work, we still enjoyed ourselves because the staff was so instantly ready to solve a problem and smooth it out.
Upon walking it I was taken by how spacious it was. Beautiful condo so well kept. Loved having 2 full bathrooms. Beautiful views from the lania. Great beach type area provided as it’s located along a rocky area of the ocean. Great pool as well. Easy drive into town, but far away enough to be quite. Only thing lacking was an oven. A toaster oven would have been a great alternative. Hair dryers are very dated & one over heats a minute in. It’s close to the elevator which is good except in the morning when people are leaving with suitcases or just talking loudly as the bedroom is located against the outter walkway. Those are truly my only complaints. Would recommend this condo/location. Ocean view is a must & so well worth it!!
We were pleasantly surprised at our beautiful view, especially for the great cost of our room. It was a great quiet area with a nice pool and also privacy because of locked gates on the grounds. Our room was very nice.
