Aston Shores at Waikoloa
- What's Included
We needed space for a family of 5 (teenagers). The room sizes were decent, but the decor was from early 80s and included carpet in the bathroom. The condo was not maintained well with numerous lights out and switches not working. There was a terrible smell in the condo and 4 of 5 of us ended up sick. Add to all of this, we arrived at the property with no instruction on the checkin procedure. The office is located nearby at the Queens Marketplace. What we liked about the place was the large lanai. We hid from the smell of the condo out there. The location was great. We walked to Queens Marketplace to get breakfast and dinner at the Island Market. It was a gated community keeping traffic to a minimum. There was a beach within walking distance and plenty within a short drive.Great location, terrible condo.
This is the second time we have stayed here, largely because it's the only show in town that's within our budget and can accommodate a party of 9-11. The last time, in 2009, our unit literally fell apart. Doors fell off hinges, cabinet doors wouldn't close, etc. We embarked on this trip hoping that things would be a bit better maintained. Let me begin with check-in. You cannot check in on the property, something that was not in our booking materials and which is not noted on the door of what used to be the front office. The sign on that door gives a phone number to call for after hours check in but that just went to vm. At 7:30 pm, with my 82 year old mother in tow, we were frantically trying to come up with a plan when my SIL found another phone number for the property managers and got our check in info. We did have to physically check in the next day at their office (second floor of the Queen's Market). Whilst going through the process, you are sternly warned about smoking, partying, and physical damage to the unit. You are also informed that if you want someone to clean your unit during your stay, there is an additional charge. There are mandatory daily amenities fees as well as a mandatory cleaning fee upon checkout. Our two bedroom unit is nice enough. Several of the walls have been patched but not painted. Both toilets run constantly. The dryer broke last night. The kitchen is stocked pretty much as you would expect (Pro tip: if you plan on cutting anything denser than butter, bring your own knives). Our party has four units with one vacuum and one mop between us. There are no cleaning supplies and only one unit had any dishwashing soap or laundry soap even though those were supposed to have been in the unit. Laundry and dish soap did mysteriously appear when we requested garbage bags. Only one of those was provided at the outset of our stay. If you're not going to provide at least a weekly cleaning, then at least provide the supplies and equipment so your guests can do their own. The only morning that hasn't begun with a leaf blower, lawn mower, or chipper (at 8am) was Christmas morning. Today, the chipper has been going for an hour and shows no sign of stopping. As an added bonus, the unit under us is begin renovated and the tile saw usually begins between 7-7:30 am. The grounds are beautifully maintained but this is the High Season. People come to relax and the combined dulcet tones of a chain saw and a chipper are not the relaxing ambiance we had hoped for. We have stayed at other Aston-managed properties on Maui. I'm not a huge fan of their style, particularly the way they ding with added mandatory fees, but it's Hawaii, so just go to the beach! After this experience, though, I would never stay at an Aston property again and would not recommend them to anyone.
Stayed at Unit 322. What a wonderful experience. A gigantic lanai that we spent enjoyable mornings drinking coffee. Completely updated kitchen. Unit had a great Hawaiian feel to it. Would definitely recommend it or come back to spend some time.
Every room is maintained differently to this only pertains to our room. The location had a view of the lava fields and golf course and was pleasant. Our lanai was beautifully furnished and was the nicest space in the unit. Our living room was decent and reasonably comfortable. The kitchen was old but mostly functional. The dishwasher was worthless and there a no microwave safe (glass) dishes. One of the beds was ridiculously hard and falling apart. The bathrooms desperately need an upgrade. The tubs don't drain completely. One has a hole rusted through. The faucets are white crusted and one handle was missing. The "daily amenity fee" is really a wifi fee. There is no longer a lobby so picking up movies and games is no longer simple. There is no daily newspaper or coffee. Housekeeping was less than effective. They failed to bring in toilet paper and right after they left, my grandson was lying on the floor and found a toe nail. Yuk for the vacuuming.
There is not much to say about this accommodation except it was older and dated. Now they have confused everyone so that you are not able to check in at the property but at a shopping center a mile or so away. Probably was because there was nothing much happening at this very quiet place not close to many amenities. Would not recommend to anyone!
