Castle Halii Kai at Waikoloa
- What's Included
Halii Kai is an amazing resort. We've stayed there three times now. The grounds are unbelievably beautiful, and the pool, exercise hale, and restaurant are top notch. Previously the rooms have been amazing and extremely well stocked with amenities, kitchen utensils, beach gear, and room decoration/appointments. The unit we were in this time was the exception. Unit 22E has a great layout (as do all in Halii Kai); however, the owners of that unit have placed the bare minimum to get clients by. When you book with Halii Kai, the HK management will assign you a unit based on what units they manage from owners. This is not like a typical hotel room where the hotel owns the room. What you get in the unit is based on what the owners of that unit place for their guests. The owners of 22E provide the minimum for a resort of this caliber, in our opinion. This unit has no headboards on the beds, worn out and dated comforters (although clean), and slip covers on the couch and chair in the living room. The unit was a 3 bedroom/2 bath, and the kitchen was not stocked enough, even for just 2 people staying there. We had to wash dishes every day, and it was just the two of us. Glasses were mismatched (and few), there was no blender, no grilling utensils, the thinnest dollar store flatware we've ever had to use, and no beach gear. The wifi which is available in the unit it adequate if you are in the kitchen, den, or master bedroom; however, connectivity is dreadful in the rest of the unit (the owners need to install a repeater). The owners also had a Nest thermostat as well, and the default temperatures were 82 or 86 degrees (depending on the day/time). The system was set up to change the temperature back to 82 or 86 every 2 hours. It is Hawaii and it gets hot quickly, so you have to get up every 2 hours during the night to set the temperature again. The carpet also appears dirty throughout and is quite worn. The owners have post-it notes throughout the unit reminding people of how to care for certain items. Some units in Halii Kai have carports where you can park your rental. 22E does not (which is not the owners' fault) and you have to park in the designated parking space. That being said, the unit itself is beautiful in layout (like all others in Halii Kai), with a very large master bath, tile shower, and wonderful kitchen. This one (22E) is just too poorly stocked.Halii Kai is amazing - we will stay there again if we continue to get a good deal. We will just be sure to request a different unit than 22E.
Spacious and clean. View of the ocean. Multi-bedroom place with nice terraces and full kitchen. Probably best suited for families, although we were on our honeymoon. Cozy pool and bar. The only thing that could have been better was hot water in the upstairs shower (we were advised there was a trick to operating the shower head, but it only seemed to work on the downstairs shower).
I stayed at Halii Kai for a week starting on 4/15. The resort was beautiful and very quiet. I had to go to the Hilton for a Luau and it has an extremely busy lobby. I think I appreciated the quietness of Halii Kai. In any event we got to our condo at about 8pm. It was beautiful but stifling hot when we arrived. I thought the AC wasn't on and turned it on, but it appeared to not have been working. I called the after hours number and was told that it would be taken care of in the morning and that I should open all of the windows and turn on the fans. A little. upset, but I was okay with that. No one came in the morning, so I called and someone was sent over. The guy said it was turned on properly but not working and he would be back. He never came back, at least not inside so I called. The lady in the office told me that because I had the windows open that the coils had froze and they had to call an outside repair place. I was a little offended because she made it appear as if it were my fault. The windows were open in efforts to try to get some relief. So this was might 2 with no air. I had an all day tour the next day and just knew that when I returned that the place would be nice and cool, but nope still o AC on the third night. The next day I decided to call Costco since that's who I booked my trip through. They called the office and within a few hours I was moved to a different unit. There was also a different lady in the office at the time. Now I was in a unit with great AC but no hot water and bugs. I chopped the bugs up as being a ground floor issue. There was also a mouse trap under the front room bed which freaked me out. I noticed it while looking in the closet mirror. For goodness sake, it could have been placed far enough out of site. This unit also only had one working TV in the living room with a 1970s couch that I was a little worried about sitting on. The place wasn't dirty but definitely not as immaculate as the 2 bedroom that I was originally in. I suppose that owners may not keep up a 3 bedroom as well figuring that there might be lots of kids visiting. Also my 4th day was a complete waste due to having severe allergy issues for sleeping in the heat. I asked about some type of refund at checkout and was told that they would have to work it out with Costco. I will say that the lady at check out was very apologetic and said that she had just gotten back in the office the day that Costco called. They ended up refunding me for 2 days and Costco threw in a $100 Costco card which I was happy with. I just didn't understand why the First Lady in the office blew me off pretty much when she could have moved me the first day. In any event, overall a nice property, but you really learn about places by how they handle problems. If I ever visit the Big Island again, I would probably stay some place else. I was originally booked at Kings Land by Hilton until I found a better rate that included my rental through Costco.
Hāli`i Kai made our stay very relaxing. First thing off the bat, their front desk person, Pua, was the sweetest person we've ever met. She made us feel welcomed, taken care of, and comfortable. Our condo provided us with everything from central AC to even having laundry detergent. The pool was beautiful, especially at night. Over all, Pua and Hāli`i Kai made our stay the best!
We stayed in unit 24A for a week and enjoyed the condo every minute we were in it. The beds were super comfy and the kitchen has everything we needed and then some. It's nice going into a condo rental when there is simple condiments in it like salt, pepper, some seasonings, tin foil, zip lock bags, and many others. They all came into use. We were very thankful. The owners of the Condo were pleasant to rent from and they had plenty of extra items in the condo to use... Tennis rackets and balls, boogie boards, chairs, umbrellas, beach towels, and lots of snorkel gear to name a few. The laundry room was equipped with soap and cleaning supplies. The outside patio was nice to sit at and have dinner. This unit is less than a 10 minute walk to the pool/gym area. I highly recommend this unit to rent! Oh FYI... Stop at Costco on ur way to the condo and stock up... It's definitely worth it!
