Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel
- What's Included
Positives:- Renovations to both common areas and rooms are progressing well and should be substantially finished by late February or early March.- The construction is much less distracting than I expected.- I have stayed in one of the new rooms. The new furnishings are a clear upgrade, and the rooms remain spacious.- The common area upgrades are well done and include a second pool.Negatives:- Historically, the room rates have been less than the other top hotels on the Kona Coast. However, room rates will clearly be increasing after the construction is finished.
Remember it was under construction. It is posted everywhere. If you don't like it, don't go. The staff is great and the sunsets unbelievable. The staff went out of their way to accommodate us while they are making another pool.
We've been here three times now, expensive but perfect. The beach here and nearby Mauna Kea (which are affiliated) are the best on the island. Pools are very nice , but hard to beat the beach. Towel and lounge service here and not far to the bar (Mauna Kea is right on the beach)
This hotel is under renovation. It is noisy in the daytime and has very few amenities. Only one pool open and only minimal room service and one single poolside restaurant. However the staff is pretty friendly with exception of front desk people who weren't that helpful . Rooms were nice . Clean and a/c worked fine. Ice delivered every night . Good breakfast buffet which I used for both breakfast and lunch ( gained 5 pounds while in Hawaii ) . Hotel not far form shopping at Queen's market , about $20 from Uber. As long as you aren't expecting hotel amenities or staying in the room it was fine. We got up and left and toured. The wireless internet worked fine which is a plus and the beach was nice and uncrowded ( perhaps because of the lack of guests) . Should they give more of a discount to stay there until renovation is complete? Absolutely . Did they ? No. New Years eve they had a pathetic "celebration" which they wanted to charge $40 per guest . We passed. I think after the renovation the hotel will be a great place to stay but until March 2018 I would consider its sister property , the Mauna Kea. Much nicer with decent amenities . Also charging a daily "resort fee" when you have no amenities is a bit excessive.
I read the previous reviews before staying at the Hapuna for 6 nights. I must admit, I was tempted to stay somewhere else after having read some of the reviews. I made my booking in 6 months in advance and there was no notice of renovations going on in Jan 2018. So this is my unbiased view of Hapuna.Fact: There is renovation works going on. The main lobby area (they are renovating the landing area) is quite noisy during the day. The passageway that connects both towers at level 6 was closed. Therefore, one would have to go across to the other side to access the pool via level 7 or 8. No big deal. I stayed in a room in Tower 4. The trucks went back and forth during the day as it was close to the service entrance. Therefore, the balcony was quite dusty. This was offset by the fact that housekeeping staff cleaned the balcony area during service. I could not hear the construction noise from the lobby area but did here the trucks going up and down outside my balcony.Fact: Only two eateries were available - one by the pool, and one at the bar. There is a snack bar next to the bar if one wanted to purchase snacks and drinks. So, dining options are quite limited in comparison to their neighbouring resort.Fact: The staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful.Fact: The rooms were massive and clean albeit a bit dated.Fact: The pool is a good size. I swum laps and I'm estimating it to be about 50m. This pool is much larger than the resort next door.I attended a conference during my stay there and couldn't hear any noise when I was at the meetings. I did pay a conference rate for the room. I can understand if people are paying full rates that they could be quite disappointed. Hapuna beach is beautiful but do be aware of rips. I think Spencer Beach is a much safer swimming beach but only by a fraction. Hapuna is also a much bigger beach than Spencer. The sunsets were beautiful. Once can enjoy them whilst swimming in the pool or sipping cocktails at the bar. Beautiful! To access the pool or beach if you are at the other end of the hotel, can be quite an expedition. Whilst my room was close to the car park, it was a bit of a walk to the pool - lifts and stairs. The wi fi connection is not the best. There was a lot of drop outs and quite slow. I used the free wifi available at the resort next door and it was significantly faster. I think once the renovation is complete, it will be 5 * again.
