Kanaloa At Kona
- What's Included
Personnel is so unprofessional--kept my family waiting in the car because no registration until designated time--"no sooner!"After registration, was notified room was not and won't be ready for one hour--no refreshment center to wait at, no amenities for waiting customers! Not even One Star!
Checked in late , 8.45 p.m so office closed . No big deal as notice on door by phone said call security. We did and they checked us in ( room 401 ) . Security guy very pleasant and helpful.Condo very big with 2 terrace areas . Like , some reviews say , a little dated but we were happy after traveling 26 hours from London .Went to formally check in and ask if we could. Heck out at 1.00pm instead of 11.00 - not unreasonable I thought . Room was booked so wouldn't extend . Fair enough I suppose. What ISN'T fair enough was the bill !!!. We Prepaid $107 - great rate we thought . However , the reception staff asked me to sign the bill which read $247 !!!!!!!This was service charge plus $100 cleaning charge . We had the room for 14 hours for goodness sake and 8 of those we were sleeping .Used shower and wc . What justification is there for a charge like that ? Still in room so maybe they'll lower the charge . Not holding out much hope Would I come back ? Yes but only if those outrageous charges are changed . Nearly 150% more than we had expected to pay They have just charged us the full amount without anyone signing for it - not the end of this !!
Unit 2001 is an oceanfront 2 bedroom 2 bath condo. The reservation experience with Castle Resorts was positive, and the on-site manager Katarina was helpful. My impression is that it's more challenging to find nicer condos in the Kona area, yet the trade-off is the lower prices. This complex is in the leafy neighborhood of Keauhou, a short drive from touristy Kailua-Kona. Pros: Location was truly oceanfront. Each evening we enjoyed watching the boats pull into the bay by the Sheraton after sunset for the Manta Ray snorkel/dive trips. The lanai was also great for watching the moon set early each morning. There's a walking trail between the condos and the ocean, along the lava coast. Bed & pillows were very comfortable. A/C worked great. Unit has a stacked washer/dryer which was useful. There's a nice shopping center just up the hill with multiple restaurants and a good KTA grocery store. We really enjoyed dinner and music at Sam Choy's Kai Lanai on our first night when we were exhausted from travel. We picked the Keauhou location to be a 5-minute drive to the Sea Quest snorkel tour. That worked out great.Cons: Complex is dated and this unit could really use a remodel. Poor quality TV in the living room, no TV in bedrooms. Kitchen not very well stocked. Bathrooms quite vintage and rather dark. Older furniture. I prefer hard surface flooring in Hawaii, but this unit has carpet (yuck). Room photos online are obviously pretty old.We booked the room last minute knowing it wasn't going to be luxurious, so we made the most of our stay because we wanted to start our Big Island trip in the Kona area. Given the price, the "classic" nature of the unit didn't really take away from our enjoyment. But I probably would not stay at Kanaloa again unless I knew the unit was recently renovated.
The condo was beautiful. We booked through Outrigger. You can also book through Castle. The Outrigger check-in is up the hill in the mall complex. The Castle check-in is in the condo complex. The Good: The condo was beautiful and spacious. Our condo had ocean views - which were a treat. We enjoyed eating dinner on the lanai. There were 2 downstairs bedrooms and an upstairs loft with a full-size bed. All beds were comfortable. Pillows were adequate. The kitchen was well-equipped. Ours had 3 bathrooms -- all of them were beautiful. The condo is close to a grocery store and small mall complex. Check in and check out were easy. The personnel we dealt with were wonderful to work with. There are 3 pools on property. One is ocean front. My kids enjoyed the pools. There was laundry equipment in the condo - which was handy. The condo was extremely clean - which we appreciated! To Note: Our condo did not have air conditioning and the first 2 days, the condo was sweltering I understand that August is very hot... and maybe it is not needed all the time. But if you are considering a condo in August, you should note this if the heat bothers you. There were a number of fans in the condo. Also there were some maintenance things -- such as trim missing in one spot, toilet that ran, etc... but those didn't bother us excessively. Last to note - if stairs bother you, make sure to ask about stairs. Our condo had a flight of stairs before you reached the main level. This was not at all a problem for us, but we've traveled with my parents, and it would have been a problem for them. Overall, the condo was beautiful. We appreciated the ocean views and the space.
We stayed at Kanaloa at Kona for 2 nights in June. I booked directly through the Outrigger website and had great communication with the staff before our trip. I'm a little torn on how to review this, but I'll start with the good - - The location was perfect for us. 15-ish minutes south of the busy part of Ali'i Dr, yet close enough to the coffee farms and other things on our list in south Kailua Kona. - The units are large and spacious. We had a 2 bedroom + loft unit with 2 full baths and a washer and dryer. Perfect for family travel! - The grounds were extremely well kept. There was no litter, landscaping was beautiful, the vibe of the property was quiet and family oriented. - THE VIEWS! We booked an ocean front villa, and oh my goodness, it was AMAZING. My 12 year old listed that view of one of his favorite parts of the trip! The less good? - the interior of the units, or at least our particular unit, was quite dated. A bit reminiscent of the Golden Girls. That being said, the kitchen was well stocked, the beds were comfy, and while it feels like a nit-picky complaint, I did expect a lot better for the price I was paying. - the exterior walls are dreadfully thin. Luckily the grounds are quiet, but I did wake up one morning to hear a woman on a cell phone and listened to her entire conversation word for word. (Don't worry, her son was putting the laundry in like she asked.) - You're charged $30 per day for air conditioning. I know, I know, we didn't have to use it. But it was 84 degrees in that condo. We tried opening the windows, but it just wasn't cooling down. Plus we're from Iowa, we're used to being cold. - The washer in our unit didn't work properly, and maintenance was closed after 4pm. Luckily my husband is handy and got it to work more or less, but both the washer and dryer needed replaced. Likewise, the master toilet ran all night long. Nothing major, the unit just needed some love. - the check in process was a pain. You need to check in at the Royal Sea Cliff, 15 minutes north of the Kanaloa. Since we were coming from the south, this added an additional 30 minutes in the car, plus the rather long check in process. Again, not a huge deal, just kind of a pain in practice. All of that being said, yes, I would stay here again. We did enjoy it, it was comfortable, the staff we interacted with was very nice, and the view of the ocean front villas and the resulting Kona sunsets can not be beat!!
