Kanaloa at Kona by Castle
- What's Included
Overall, we LOVED staying at Kanaloa at Kona. We did not have any issues and we stayed here for one week. This is more of a timeshare community than a “resort”, so I will refer to it as “the place”. Location: The place has an AWESOME location – 10 minutes north of Captain Cook and 15 minutes south of downtown Kona. It is located just north of the Sheraton. PLEASE NOTE: A rental car is a MUST here, as nothing is within walking distance other than the Keahou Bay and dock.Premises: 3 pools on property, everything was kept very clean and tidy. They were trimming the palm trees while we stayed, but it wasn’t much of a distraction. The check-in staff was helpful and provided a few good tips. There are very few amenities other than the pools – no spa, no restaurants, etc. Please note – this property does not clean every day and if you choose to have your room cleaned during your stay, it is an extra fee. ALSO – you WILL be charged a $150 cleaning fee upon arrival (this is noted on your reservation, but I see complaints about this on Tripadvisor). Do your research. The room itself: We stayed in Room 3401 (partial ocean view). The partial ocean view was to the small bay near the property, and we were close enough to hear the waves crashing on our lanai. Speaking of the lanai, we got a 1 bedroom unit. It came with two lanais (one off the living room and one off the bedroom). It also had a large living room area, full kitchen, and two full baths. This one bedroom unit could have slept a family of four comfortably, as the couch is a pullout queen. The full kitchen was awesome – they provided many pots and pans, glasses, plates, silverware, knives, cutting board, etc. The fridge is huge with the fridge on top and freezer below. We stocked up on drinks at Costco and were able to keep everything nice and cold. The unit has a blow dryer and they provide some shampoo, conditioner, and a body bar. Also, there are two beach towels provided. The décor was dated, but clean and in good condition. The biggest downside was the crappy TV. Not that I needed a great TV, but the TV color would fade in and out during a show and the volume would rise and fall without us touching a button. However, it was great the TV was newer, as I was able to plug in my HDMI Smart Blu-ray player and with the FREE fast Wi-Fi available, we streamed Netflix quite a bit. The TV in the bedroom is TINY, but we don’t use that anyway, so it didn’t bother us. Our unit did not have any AC, which was fine for the time we were there (late Sept. – early Oct.). I can imagine in the heat of the summer you would need the AC, though.OVERALL: We would definitely stay here again if we were to visit the Big Island. If you are looking for a luxurious getaway at a resort, this is NOT THE PLACE FOR YOU. If you are looking for a great location close to many attractions, with lots of room, a full kitchen, and at least two full baths, this is the place for you. As with any timeshare type place, each unit will be a little different, so please keep that in mind. I cannot recommend this place enough!
While not overly terrible (I've had worst experiences), they can do better. Here's just a list of inefficiencies: 1. No air conditioning in my rental unit. 2. They've got a roach problem. I found two roaches scampering in the kitchen. 3. Wifi was not working when I arrived and when I called to have it fixed, the front desk assistant seemed (1) annoyed and (2) reluctant to send someone to come fix it after I explained to her several times that I keyed in the exact code for the wifi that she had given me over the phone. 4. Maintenance takes forever (probably due to the annoyed front desk assistant). 5. There's literally nothing to do other than the resort in walking distance - in other words, you MUST have a car. 6. When I made the reservation, I made it for a single unit. However, when I arrived they were out and upgraded me to the Suite (with two bedrooms). This was fine, except, they still wanted to charge me the "clean-up/resort fee" for the Suite! 7. Bottom line - enjoy your vacation and pick somewhere else. This place needs help with customer service and pest control. They are also way too far out for the price.
We spent 2 weeks at the Kanaloa resort in August. It was very lovely place, most suitable for a long term vacation stay. Booking - We have stayed at this resort 13 years ago and have found this place very beautiful and satisfactory - much nicer than other resorts on Alii Drive that we had stayed before e.g. Royal Seacliff, part of Aston at that time. In reading the various trip advisor reviews, we were somewhat concerned with some of the negative comments as 13 years have passed. We did some additional research on the webs and read a reliable travel guide, Hawaii The Big Island Revealed -- provided to us by a friend who lived on the Island. The resort is one of the only two condos that are located south of Kailua along Alii drive and earn a "gem" rating in the guide book. We called the resort, spoke to the agent on our booking requirements. Mr Hicks, the General Manager, returned the call and confirmed his recommended selection, unit 2230 - 2 bedroom 2 bath ocean front condo.Check-in - As this is a condo complex with different owners, not a hotel with 24 hours service catering mainly to 1 to 3 nights stay, the office is open only during day time. As we were coming in after hours, we called in advance and followed the resort instructions to check-in with the security guard. The lady guard was ready for us. She was extremely cordial and promptly took us to condo. Later on, she checked with us by telephone to make sure everything was satisfactory.Condo complex ground and facilities - Top-rated, spacious layout of 2-3 story buildings, covered parking, very beautiful landscaping with blooming tropical trees and plants, several pools, tennis courts, ping pong tables, gas grills etc. Condo 2230 - This unit is a very spacious and well designed condo with all amenities provided. The owner has decorated and furnished this place beautifully. It was apparent to us that they were very proud of their condo and have maintained it very well. The condo has a stunning corner lanai, giving us a wide view of the ocean and the coast line with Keahou bay and the Sheraton hotel at a distance. We enjoyed the lanai tremendously, watching the sunset nightly and listening to the surf pounding below at night. The unit has air conditioning but one has to pay an additional $25/ day for it. In our view, this is money well spent to sleep well at night as August is fairly humid. Even with this added cost, the rent per night is still relatively inexpensive at $300 / night. Where can one find a 1,300 -1,400 square foot oceanfront condo with a huge lanai for six persons in a choice location in the U.S. at this price?Services - Overall good. Upon request, the resort promptly provided a very comfortable air bed to be used in lieu of the sofa bed. There were a few snags during our stay but the staff responded quickly. For some reason, the wireless internet password was not correctly noted in the condo. The security lady came to the condo and helped to bypass the modem so that we could use the high speed wired broadband. Thus, no issue for the first night. Mr. Hicks, the GM, came by and installed a new wireless modem the next day.The air condition went off one night. It was fixed the next day.Location - The condo is perfectly situated in very serene and natural setting yet it is close to everything . Golf course next door, Keahou shopping center within a few minutes drive, good restaurants nearby, easy access to Kailua as well as many tourist sites. There are many wonderful places to visit within an easy drive from the condo. Here are our favorite places:1. Mauna Kea Beach - Probably one of the best beach in the world, better than Hapuna because of beautiful soft sand and crystal clear water, tree shades, excellent shower facilities, landscaped grounds, very good safe snorkeling, and turtles. Limited parking so come early during the week or around 11:30 before noon when people goes home for lunch.2. Captain Cook monument - Rent a kayak from Bayside Adventures right on the bay ($60 for double, no time limit). They provide everything and put you in the water. They would show you how to kayak too. The snorkeling at Captain Cook is excellent and safe. 3. Mauna Kea peak - Rent a 4 wheel drive and drive to the top of Mauna Kea. University of Hawaii has stargazing programs 3 nights a week. 4. UCC coffee plantation, Holualoa - Excellent coffee drinks and creamery e.g. coffee ice cream. A beautiful plantation to wander around free of charge.
waiting for an hour because no registration until designated time--"no sooner!" After registration, was notified for another $75 cleaning fee for only one night stay! We've already paid around $140 in advance, so total we need to pay more than $200 for on night! The Sheraton near around only cost $180 in total, which is much better than here. We were very angry and didn't even stay there. Will call my bank to dispute this charge! I'd like to give it 0 star!
Personnel is so unprofessional--kept my family waiting in the car because no registration until designated time--"no sooner!"After registration, was notified room was not and won't be ready for one hour--no refreshment center to wait at, no amenities for waiting customers! Not even One Star!
