Outrigger Royal Sea Cliff
- What's Included
We were in the Hawaiian Islands for a month, staying in a total of five (5) hotels and without doubt this was by far the biggest disappointment. From the moment we checked in to the time we left, a total of six (6) nights not once did a member of the hotel staff knock on our door, check on our welfare, ensure we were enjoying the experience, or to even ensure we were not dead!!!On the first day we had to complain about the cleanliness of the unit, our feet were black within three hours of showering and walking on the hardwood floors. For the remainder of our stay we wore some sort of foot covering. (they did attempt a clean)No-one came to refresh the rooms, check on the ancillaries or replenish soaps etc.Probably fortunate they didn't, as they would have found a way to levy an additional charge - I can't believe there is cost to clean the unit when you leave, I always thought that was considered in the room rate. (in all our other hotels it was)The air conditioning was next to useless, we tried several settings as the one recommended achieved nothing in respect to occupant comfort.Oh the bed, any movement by one party was met with an opposite and magnified reaction direct to the other party, one night I actually spent several hours sleeping in a chair so my Wife could get some sort of rest.Lastly, if you experience any prolonged rain period, beware of flooding in the ground floor units.Fortunately when we return next year, we now know what hotel to avoid like the plague and trust me, this is the one - the other four hotels were magnificent and a credit to the Hawaiian Tourist Industry.
Room had a view of nothing and was so outdated and worn. Floor was dirty, drapes had inches of dust, AC not working right, bathroom was disgusting and nats were flying all over. Moved us immediately to another room. Room was cleaner but carpeting was filthy, one lamp was broken and lampshades had mold. Small lamp on kitchen counter had an ancient plug that was falling off.AC worked but the air was wet and humid. Killed numerous water bugs, ants and nats. Bathroom grout was moldy and TV only had local channels, no national. What a horrible end to 2 beautiful weeks in Hawaii!
As I am writing this a torrential rain with high winds batters The Big Island. Our bike tour in Volcanoes NP is cancelled due to impassable roads and unsafe conditions, (lightning.) The resort is in a great spot less than a mile south of the little downtown of Kailua and a 20 minute drive from the Kailua-Kona airport. Unfortunately, the 1980s era resort is showing it's age, particularly in how it handles a heavy rainstorm. Our ceiling on the fifth floor leaked. Water seeped in below a window sill and right outside the roof over the fourth floor balcony that has a foot high ledge has filled with 10 inches of water because the downspout was clogged. Probably the reason our ceiling leaks is because the same thing is happening above us. The resort is missing what for us is a basic amenity. It lacks even the tiniest fitness room. In and of themselves, the leaks might not be enough to not stay here. Two pools right by the water a plus, but no bar. Tennis courts on site. The locals are saying this is rare event. The West side of Hawai'i is the driest in all the islands. Still, some guests had leaks over their beds we hear, and the resort is full, so they will have to tough it out or spend to stay elsewhere. Staff are courteous, responsive, and helpful. Maybe what it boils down to is this is more a condo/residential development rather than a hotel, vacation "resort". Try Huggos right down the road for excellent food and beautiful beachside, outdoor dining.
Located on the coast with pleasant sounds of crashing waves on black rocks is a plus. A balcony allows you to sit down, have breakfast, and enjoy the island breeze. The property does show its age, and there are no frills- from the average pool to no other amenity. Not the place for you if you enjoy cleaning services every now and then. Did like having a fully functional kitchen and spaciousness.
The property is nice with a central garden, open air lobby and waterfalls. There are two pools and a spectacular ocean, and lava beach view from them. There is no beach access, but there are lovely beaches nearby. The front desk and concierges are friendly and helpful. There are no bellman and you do have to struggle with your own luggage on those ridiculous carts that a previous reviewer mentioned. I liked the underground parking which I found secure and an easy transition from parking to our room. Our room was spacious and nicely furnished. We had a one bedroom condo. It's not the Ritz but is furnished island style, with rattan and floral furniture. The condo supplies all that you will need as far as kitchen supplies, bathroom supplies, extra towels, coffee and ice. We complained about our original coffee maker and it was replaced that day. Our room had a washer and dryer... yeah! When we needed more supplies, like laundry detergent or toilet paper, the front desk supplied that. The wifi works well. The lanai (patio) is large and offers a great view. I only have a few complaints: We booked an ocean view, and it was.. but at a distance. The property is large and if you are set back on the 6th or 7th floor, you will only have a distant view. If I were to stay here again, I would book an ocean front. I tried to move when we arrived but was told nothing was available. The ocean front condos are about $40.00 more per night. Next, the rooms do smell funny which you'll notice after a long day of sightseeing. I think it is a musty smell due to the high humidity in this area.Although the overall condo was clean... the bathroom tub was a little suspect. I bought a bottle bleach. And finally... On two occasions, we had a great big beetle run across the floor, actually straight at me. Yikes! I did call the front desk, who graciously offered pest control. I declined; it is the tropics.Ali'i drive is great place to start your exploration of Hawaii! Overall, I would stay here again!
