Aqua Kauai Beach Resort
- What's Included
This was our 3rd trip to Kauai and our 3rd stay at Kauai Beach Resort. We stayed there for our honeymoon, my husband’s 40th birthday and just last week for our 10 year wedding anniversary. Having stayed there 3 times over 10 years gives us a good look at the resort. The first 2 times were great, no complaints really. This time we were sorely disappointed in the service, room, and the onsite restaurants/room service. I really think it’s slipped from a 3.5-4 star hotel to a 2.5-3 star hotel. First they couldn’t give us the room we ordered when we arrived. Finally we were able to compromise on a room only to have it be run down. Paint was peeling from the wall in the bathroom. We arrived on February 2, yet still had a January calendar of events and were never given a February one. Then when visiting the onsite restaurant for breakfast they messed up my order and refused to fix it twice during our stay. I had given them the benefit of the doubt and tried it again thinking it was an off day for the staff, no such luck. They have drastically changed the menus at the restaurants on site and the room service. And while the food was pretty good at the pool bar and grill, the service was terribly slow. One day we waited 20 minutes to see a server while sitting at a table 15 feet away from the bar. When we tried to get drinks from the bartender, we were told we were sitting at a table and had to wait for our server. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained, but half the pools were unusually green (even the staff commented on this to us). Overall it’s a decent hotel, especially if you don’t plan on spending much time there other than sleeping. We won’t be back to this hotel which is really disappointing because it used to be great.
So I'm giving this resort a five star rating. Good service, by the beach, lots of pools and hotubes to swim in. There is also laundry service, a spa and gymn. The staff is friendly and resort food is good. They have a a good happy hour at shutters. We booked a private owned condo from VRBO. This condo is amazing. It's condo 4102. It's on the first floor and owned by Kathy Remas. This condo is perfect you have a direct view of the ocean plus ac , a fridge with freezer, microwave, and tons of other fun stuff in which u need for the beach. You don't need to buy stuff at the resort but there is a Costco , Safeway, and Walmart nearby. Please rent a car !!! It will make your island getaway more fun and relaxing. Tours are really spendy. There is a driving app called Shaka guide which will take you on a tour adventure on the island. It's only 4.99 for each tour
The resort has a good ambience and the age of the resort is a plus rather than a negative. The various pools are well set out with a relaxing pool side bar. Nice beach for a walk but not ideal for swimming this time of the year. The resort is isolated and you really need a car for an extended stay more than a few days unless you solely want to rely on arranged tours. The resort could do with better car parking facilities and has limitations with evening dining unless you arrive early or make a reservation for your preferred time. Meals were good though.
Our overall experience here was mixed. I'll break it into the good, the bad and the ugly. To be fair, I'll start with the positive. The Good:Overall, the staff members were friendly and the manager that assist us with "the ugly" did the best she could for us. The crowd at the resort was mostly composed of seniors so the atmosphere was tame and family friendly. The pools were clean and not very crowded. We were also pretty happy with the food served at the buffet breakfast - although we wouldn't have paid the $24 (per person) for it. The Bad:Roosters were not kept out of the premise of the resort. As a result, you will be woken up at 5 - 6am each morning depending on how light of a sleeper you are. Towels must be exchanged using towel cards (just a minor inconvenience). Minimal activities at this resort and no water sport equipment for guests to use (i.e., snorkels, paddle boards, etc). Not much of a beach as the sand stretched maybe 5 meters wide and there's no reef to calm the harsh waves (can't really swim or snorkel) and we also saw warning signs of jelly fish in the water hence why no one was in the water. The room itself was decent but we found the carpet to be dirty, the shower water pressure was fairly low, the safe worked intermittently (I had to pull the plug and re-plug it once for it to work again), fridge was leaking inside (likely the freezer was working intermittently). The Ugly:Upon our arrival, we were told that the room (ocean view) we reserved and pre-paid was not available. As a compromise, they offered us a "room upgrade" - basically a pool-view suite. This was very upsetting as the ocean view room was not available for the entire duration of our stay (4 nights). The suite was useless to us as we didn't have a family and barely stayed in our room. Anyways, there was nothing they could do. Finally, after waiting 10 minutes, I was greeted by the check-in manager. After talking over our situation, she gave us free breakfast for the duration of our stay and waived the $25 daily resort fee. Although we were still upset, we realised that was the best outcome of our predicament. FYI, we booked using hotels.com
Nice resort. Had a lagoon view room, main floor. Room was very nice. Large enough. Good bed and shower. Had a fridge as well. Beautiful grounds. Lots of pools. Cool but refreshing. Nice beach for walking even if you can't swim. Shutters has great happy hour specials. Breakfast at main restaurant is great. Eggs benny(Sunrise) and Omelettes. Valet parking is great. Free entertainment on Tuesday evening was fantastic. Two great singers and authentic Hawaiian dancers. Was better than the Luau we paid for. Close to airport. 30 minute drive south to Poipu for a beautiful sunset. Hour drive as north as you can go to Kalalau Trail. Great helicopter tour with Island Helicopters. Landed at Jurassic Falls. Very lush. Beautiful view of Waimea Canyon. Except for the rain great five days on Kauai.
