Aston at Poipu Kai
- What's Included
This is a wonderful place to stay. I travel alone and really felt safe staying at this location. The studio condo was so big and beautiful. The grounds are beautiful and great place to walk and you can even take the walking trail to the ocean. Short walk. Everything about this place is A++++++.
We are a couple with kids aged 5 and 7. We stayed for 12 nights in unit 901 Manualoha. First, the obvious: proximity to a great beach, beautiful grounds, excellent service, wonderful suite (at least ours). As for other things:- The resort is large and sprawling, made up of several named compounds. The closest (5-min walk) to Poipu Beach are Manualoha and Kahala. Kahala has a downside--it's close to Kalapaki Joe's, an on-site sports bar that has live music (mellow Hawaiian music, but definitely loud) and rowdy NFL fans. Manualoha is divided into duplexes numbered from 100 to 1000. The lower the number, the closer to the beach. Each compound is 2 stories high, and if you get a ground floor unit, you'll likely get a lanai that opens to a vast, open, green area with a walking path that leads to Poipu Beach at the one end and the start of the Maha'ulepu hiking trail. In between, you're walking past several resorts (e.g. Hyatt, Poipu Sands) and beautiful private properties, as well as oceanview. Wonderful for joggers (and there are many)!- Our unit was a 3 bed/3 bath with 2 floors, 2 balconies, and 1 patio. The suite was very well appointed, about 1,500 sqft. The kitchen was fully renovated, as is the master bath. The other two baths are older but in very good condition. Plenty of storage space and well stocked with linens and cleaning supplies. We had two large ACs in the master bed and second bdrm, portable and ceiling fans in every room. We never felt hot, thanks to constant gentle tradewinds. No bugs, mosquitos or flies. In general, a modest but extra-spacious, nicely furnished, and comfortable suite.- Areas for improvement: there are 2 pools and the water was cold. Not a big issue for us, we prefer the ocean. Cleanup wasn't done to 100% perfection, e.g. crumbs and hardened food bits in the fridge when we arrived, very dusty wicker headboard, and dirty patio furniture. Pantry items were non-existent, other than a small container of salt and pepper--you'll need to buy your own oil, spices, plastic wrap, foil, etc. Frying pans and kitchen knives need replacing--the nonstick coating is peeling and I had a minor cut trying to use a blunt knife. But, we requested better ones and they gave us a couple of brand-new knives and a much better pan immediately. Beach gear is also lacking, with only 2 beach chairs and boogie boards but no umbrella, mats or beach toys. However, Poipu Beach has a shady area close to the water, and they gave us so many beach towels we were able to use a couple for sitting on.- The closest shops/eateries are at the Poipu Shopping Village, which is a 3-min drive or 15 min walk. A closer alternative for things to do is the Grand Hyatt, which is a 10-min walk on the walking path. The hotel is situated on Shipwreck Beach, and has an open-air, ocean-facing lounge with free live music that serves breakfast items and Starbucks coffee in the morning and appies and cocktails in the evening (expensive though). There are also some interesting features for kids, like a koi pond and a tropical garden with parrots. For cheap groceries, Walmart is 20 mins away by car, but Big Save is almost as cheap and it's only 8 mins away. The airport in Lihue is 25 mins by car.- There is a US$20 resort fee per unit per day, which gives you free parking (at your doorstep), free DVD loans, wi-fi (very fast). This does amount to a chunk of fee, but not uncommon with similar resorts.Overall, we had a wonderful stay. The best things about this resort are the unit, the property, and location. Of course, no hotel is perfect hence the issues pointed out above but, again, in our opinion they are far outweighed by the positives.
I couldn't be happier with our stay at the Aston at Poipu Kai The grounds are well kept, and gorgeous, with lawn and sidewalks separating the building. the pool is chilly but nice, the access to the ocean within minutes, and the service was friendly and solved any issues. Their are many BBQ's throughout the property and 10 minutes from a reasonably priced grocery store Big and Save in Koloa.. The beds were very comfortable the washer, dryer and kitchen appliances all worked well. It is out of any large urban area so morning walks were very peaceful and uncrowded.
We have enjoyed our accommodations and stays at Poipu Kai immensely, in their tidy, well furnished townhome style units. The units have easy access parking, and are located a short walk to Poipu Beach with it's renowned 'protected Keiki Cove', Lifeguards and a favored snorkeling spot, where you will most likely see a monk seal resting on the beach and turtles in the water!Caveat Emptor: According to Aston Management Book your Accommodations directly with Aston, as 'booking through ANY other agency will incur an additional $20/day resort fee! This we ruefully discovered, however, expressing our dismay did result in a $10/day credit.EDITORIAL - Given that there are no scheduled activities or special events, naming the charge a RESORT FEE is a misnomer. Aston management states the fee covers a WI-FI access fee ... hmmm ... in today's internet age? even Starbucks & McDonalds offer FREE access! The additional inclusive items appear to be an Island Newspaper and DVD/Video Game rentals ..alas most travelers, like us, don't go to Hawaii to read the paper and watch DVD's :-(. Then there is the complimentary 'you make the coffee service', a real bummer for non-coffee drinkers, and pool towels in your room which you will need to launder. :-( Fellow travelers, know to 'book direct or be ready to pay an Up Charge, in addition to the daily visitor and island hotel taxes.YO 'booking agencies' you will need to adequately disclose these additional COSTS $$ to allay any potential GUEST consternation.
We booked an ocean-view condo through Costco and were really happy with the accommodations. Beautiful distant views of the ocean, lush landscaping and two nice pools for our use. Poipu Beach was about a 10 minute walk away, and a couple of good restaurants were also within easy walking distance. Staff was really nice too. Minor complaints: carpet in our unit could have used cleaning, and we had a hard time figuring out how to use the PlayStation when we rented movies. We would stay again, particularly in the same unit we enjoyed this time.
