Shaky start but excellent follow up service made it better

We had a terrible check in experience with a fairly rude check in staff which resulted in me getting the director of rooms out to the front desk. At the point, he wasn't too helpful and despite going there at noon for a first come first serve basis check in, we got our room at 4pm, the normal time and we were fairly upset as we could have wandered around Kauai. Fully understand an early check in is not guaranteed but this is the first hotel I have been to and been there 4 hours earlier and they could not do something more to get me checked in say, 1 hour earlier?? And I spent a lot of money at their bar waiting too. In any case, the director of rooms made it better by voluntarily comping a meal for us at the restaurant on the last night of our trip so I really appreciate the initiative on his part to do a little something. That is why I choose the Marriott over other hotel chains. Thank you James. That being said - review about the hotel. A bit dated with small bathrooms and pricey but for kauai/Hawaii, it was understandable and service (apart from check in) was excellent. Nice pool and hot tub with towel service Beach isn't swimmable or attractive to swim in as the water is murky and the beach has a lot of drift wood. No snorkeling either ... Overall if you get a good price, it's worth it. We paid ~300 per night & think 250-200 would have been more reasonable but it was high season

Almost perfect

We stayed at the Courtyard for 10 nights and it was almost perfect from check in to check out.Even before our stay, I was in contact with Geri who did her best to make sure my parents and I would enjoy our stay. She organized a surprise for my father's birthday, allocated us beautiful rooms and took care about all my 'special requests'When I met her on our first day of vacation, it was like catching up with an old friend. Her warm style, beautiful smile and will to help and please are amazing. Not only Geri, but all the people we interacted with were truly fantastic: Harry in the morning was always smilling, happy to chat and to tell about the island. Debbie went out of her way to get us lilikois as we love those fruits. We loved the location, yes the beach is not swimmable, but it is a great place to sit, watch the waves and do nothing. And there are plenty of swimmable beaches on the island. The pool area is nice, the water could be warmer though. A few degrees more would be good, specially as it was very windy when we were there.Breakfast is nice, the omelets made to order are fantastic. I would, however, suggest to have more choices at the buffet, if you stay there 10 days you'll get the same cold offering every day, while the hot dishes rotate one day to the other.Parking is big and convenient, but when there is an event at the hotel it can be difficult to find a spot. We decided not to take the car those evenings :)The rooms are a bit dated but very clean and well maintained. Yes, the bathrooms are a bit on the small size but nothing to really worry about. The hotel will go through renovation in the next months and I can't wait to come back once done to see it.

Great hotel!

My husband and I just spend 2 weeks at this hotel and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We were on the 4th floor (the top) and so had ceilings that were like open beam and very high. I loved that! Our room and bed were very comfortable. The bathroom was on the small side, but it wasn't a big deal like I had read in other reviews. The staff were very friendly and the nightly music in the bar was enjoyable. Parking could be an issue, but here was always room somewhere and it was never a very long walk to the building. We enjoyed sitting on the beach front which was so close to the resort/pool but gave us privacy and the enjoyment of listening to the waves while we were sitting in the sun reading.....how could you complain about that??!!

Great value hotel

Hotel has everything you need. The staff is very friendly. I would give it a 5 if the beach was better for swimming. With a rental car it is easy to get anywhere in the island. Can’t beat the value of this hotel for the quality.

What else could you want?

We stayed for 7 nights and really enjoyed out stay from check-in to check-out. The people were friendly, they have a lovely pool and hot tub with towel service, a fire pit and a nice beach with chairs and benches. I guess you expect all this in a hotel but here's where they went the extra mile. The strap on my mask broke and my husband asked if we could get a piece of wire to fix it - an engineer took us to his workroom in the basement and fixed it by drilling a hole and using a stainless screw and nut. He asked nothing in return and seemed pleased to assist us. Liane at the concierge desk went to lengths to book us onto a helicopter tour and followed up multiple times on changes in the weather. She genuinely cared about our experience. This hotel offers free coffee from 6:00-10:00AM and wifi in your room is also free! They have a nice bar and dining area with great food and drinks. Parking is $14/night. The hotel is situated close to restaurants, coffee shops, grocery stores and shopping. Unfortunately traffic is horrendous at certain times of the day. Be prepared to sit in stop and go. Our room was smallish but had a 15' ceiling which made it seem spacious. We had ocean view with a tiny balcony and two chairs, a small coffee bar area and a mini fridge. Good quality linens, comfy beds and daily maid service. There are walking trails, the beach and a farmers market minutes away. Highly recommended.
