Outrigger Kiahuna Plantation
- What's Included
This was our second stay at Kiahuna Plantation, and our first time booking through Castle (unit #152). We booked through Outrigger for our previous stay and the experience was more or less identical. The big advantage to booking with Castle is you can request the exact unit you want, whereas with Outrigger you can only select the class of unit. We were able to reserve a tastefully updated condo facing the main lawn, with a washer and dryer (major bonus). The resort hasn't changed at all in the 8 years since we stayed here last, except our kids (10 & 13) are bigger! That meant the interior felt a bit more crowded when we first arrived, and the oddly oversized furniture in our unit didn't help. But with plenty of strategic built-ins, we were able to unpack into it and make it work quite well. Our unit was well-stocked with kitchen essentials, beach chairs, boogie boards, games and books. Light housekeeping (towels, trash, beds) was provided daily. And with our late arrival and a very early morning hike planned for the next day, we were thankful to see a packet of coffee on the counter. The pool is across Poipu Road at the athletic club. When the kids were small we drove there but this time we walked. The crossing is a bit dicey, and 8 years later there still isn't a pretty path on the pool side of the road. It looked like they may be working on it, but for now you walk up the driveway with traffic. The pool is small but fun with a shallow sandy bottom area, waterfalls, a slide, and pretty landscaping. And happy hour coincides with our family's favorite swimming time! I do wish it stayed open past 7 pm--a few days we felt like we had to rush back to the condo get our pool time in.The beach here is a big draw. We took a surf lesson (sign up at the Beach Hut), and it was our go-to spot for boogie boarding. It's also an easy walk to the lifeguarded Poipu Beach, along the path that fronts Koa Kea and the Marriott resorts. But walking past those busy, crowded resorts, I was always thankful to get back to the peaceful, old-Hawaii simplicity and wide-open spaces of Kiahuna.
We love it here; relaxed atmosphere, easy beach access & helpful staff. The grounds are beautiful & very well maintained.Leeza at the front desk was super helpful and really provided the aloha spirit. We're already planning our return visit, hopefully it will be soon!
This was our second time staying at the Kiahuna Plantation Resort. We stayed in a ground-floor garden view one-bedroom unit for 4 nights, which was great for the three of us (2 adults, 8yr old). The units have a kitchen/living room area with a couch that has a pull-out bed. There is a sliding glass door that leads outside to a semi-private patio with furniture. There is no air conditioning, but the air moves well through the windows and there is a fan in the bedroom. Included in the rental is towel service every few days. At the end, they charge a cleaning fee...but taken into account the price is still very good compared to neighboring properties. The service was good, but we didn't interact with the staff very often. From the unit, the patio leads to an expansive lawn area with very short grass that they water daily. It feels wonderful on bare feet. Near every unit is a small foot wash station to further clean off your feet after hitting the beach. There is a fresh water shower at the beach entry point. Depending on where the unit is on the grounds, it is just a few minutes to the beach. The beach here is quite nice with decent waves for playing in. Good body surfing and boogie boarding. The far left side of the beach is rocky and used for beginner surfing (which I highly recommend trying). If you continue to the left, after a short bit of awkward footing, the sidewalk path will lead you to Poipu beach (<5 mins), where there are some sheltered areas for small children to play in and the occasional monk seal or sea turtle on the beach (we saw both this time). Parking and internet are included in your reservation and there are two mall areas close by for dining and shopping. The smaller of the two is across the street and makes for a nice evening stroll. The other is 3 minutes by car and has more services, including a drug store. For the kids, there were many small lizards on the grounds to search for. In addition, there are some feral cats that hang out on site. My wife and daughter spent a lot of time one evening wooing a pair of them onto the patio. Overall, this is a family friendly place that has great value. It is an easy place to stay as well...no dealing with parking gates, valet tickets, traffic, etc.
We were here for four nights and appreciated having a decent sized one bedroom condo. I understand they vary depending on the owner but ours had a comfortable, large bed; plenty of storage and enough kitchen equipment to rustle up meals to if need be. The decor was slightly dreary but this is partly a matter of taste. The gardens are lovely - well kept with nice lawns and much attractive planting. The location is also good, offering a good base for exploring both the the west (Waimea and the west end of the Na Pali coast are only a forty minute drive) and the north (for iconic Honelei Bay and Secrets Beach - an hour's drive). Lihue and the airport are only twenty minutes drive away. Looking more locally, there are several decent restaurants within a few minutes walk, including on Kiahuna itself. Poipu itself is much more pleasant than much of the more popular east coast. The beach itself is lovely although the sand strip is narrow and can be crowded - even when we were there outside peak season. The staff were efficient (albeit not overly friendly) and responded within a day when one of our light bulbs burnt out. The one thing that did grate was a $120 cleaning fee. The playability(amount unspecified) of this was noted when booking but the amount took me by surprise and seems a little steep - certainly out of proportion with the amount of effort that cleaning entailed.
This was our first visit to Kauai. A friend who has retired there now recommended Kiahuna Plantation resort. It was the perfect place to stay and we had an ocean view. The service was great and we loved the separate pool which was beautiful with waterfalls and a slide. We were in walking distance to great places to eat at nearby hotels. It was a perfect stay. They have lounge chairs and a grass area above the beach sand. I would return!
