Outrigger Kiahuna Plantation
- What's Included
My wife and I are NOT hard to please. We spend very little time in our room except to sleep. The condo room was 433 managed by Castle. We arrived to find a spacious condo with all the things we needed. The condo is in rough shape to say the least. The carpet was very dirty and smelled like stinky feet. We left the doors and windows open and it was ok. Furniture was old, uncomfortable and dirty but we managed. Lots of hot water and a comfortable King bed. No AC but we didn't need it as the breeze was great at night. The balcony was large with loungers etc. We only went out there once. The beach was nice but a pretty long walk. We spent most of our beach time at Poipu beach next door where we saw turtles and Monk seals on the beach. The snorkeling was a 3/10. The pool area is across the road and we drove there as it is quite a hike also. We went there once only as it didn't seem welcoming and the HOT tub was a COLD tub. There is a nice little shopping area across the road with a Starbucks and a few neat stores. There is another shopping area with restaurants etc about a mile away. The island of Kauai is awesome and we explored every inch of it. If you can afford the helicopter tour...do it...it was worth every penny. We went with Sunshine helicoptersWe had a great time in Kauai. Like the title says..the accommodations are adequate. We would come back to Kauai but not to this property. I feel a very little attention with basically no financial outlay could improve this condo immensely.
The room was clean and peaceful, however our place required about 4 fans to be brought in to keep it at tolerable warm/humid level instead of damp humid as it was when we walked into the place. It's definitely a necessity to utilize windows and doors however you are supposed to shut them when not in the room. We had a ground floor unit, which we liked for the ease of coming and going but had we planned on vacationing at the resort I would suggest a second level and leave the patio doors and windows open. We only stayed a couple nights and it was a great base location for exploring the Canyon area. We did not even use some of the amenities like the pool and so forth, the beach is not a very wide strip and the high tide makes even less room for space between water and the rock wall but it is a beautiful property, well maintained grass area and grilling/bbq space too. We were basically at the back of the property with nice garden views and of course other unit views, however it was peaceful and walking up the the beachfront the units up there tended to be more social- which is also nice depending on your preference!
The room we stayed in was infested with bedbugs and I suffered serious bites that destroyed my vacation. We brought it to management's attention who was willing to do NOTHING about it. Have notified Hawaii Department of Health who will be inspecting property and may order it to be shut down. Avoid this place at all costs.
So the week has been a bit challenging with rain and high winds. Not the best Thanksgiving for sure. That said, the thing that has saved us is the place we are staying in. The Kiahuna Plantation is an older, well maintained, condo rental place located in the most beautiful part of Poipu. While not near as fancy at the Marriott or Grand Hyatt the ambience of this place is every bit as special. The Plantation is immaculate and the staff takes awesome care of you. Very quiet here. The wind gently blows through your condominium if you leave the patio door open. Best place to sleep also as they have very good king size beds. Down by the ocean - as in oceanfront - you can sit on chairs on the well groomed lawn looking at the ocean or grab a towel from the activity center and sit on the beach. They also have the perfect beach chairs you can use. This is the perfect place to learn to surf with lessons and boards available at the activity center. The baby waves are perfect!!!We also love that you get a kitchen. We find cooking for ourselves is fun and saves money. You can't do that in the fancy hotels!Just can't say enough about this place. It is heaven on earth. You should stay here!!! Aloha
I have never had a worse hotel stay in my life. From the moment we landed at the hotel we were told the adjoining ground floor units we had requested and been assured of two weeks previous to our arrival were not what we were to have. Our children and grand children we share meals with were not adjoining, they weren’t in the same building and separated by a flood storage area. The units were not very clean when we arrived, the maid cleaned the room once in two weeks (you have to pay a $149.00 cleaning fee when you leave and I don’t mind if, when I arrive the unit is well cleaned). Both units have had many cockroaches the entire time we have been here and clean hotels don’t have this many cockroaches. All of the units we have had in our 3 years staying here have not been updated since the 70’s and poorly equipped. By poorly equipped I don’t mean quantity but quality, you couldn’t cut an egg with the sharpest knife in the kitchen. The glasses were frosted with age and if you can find cheaper small appliances I suggest you let them know. I will say that the maid who did our room was a delight and Nida Constantino at the front desk is helpful but did not resolve any issue to our satisfaction. She is really good at sorry. The one woman concierge at the beach hut which only opened several days after we were here couldn’t even bother to look up from her texting to acknowledge my wife when she spoke to her. The final straw was the pool or as they call it “The Poipu Athletic Club”. It’s the pool that’s featured in all of their ads and is owned by the property. Well it’s apparently not managed by the hotel at all but leased out to a private business managed by a fellow with severe anger management issues. While there is no service at the pool except from a shack down the road a young women decided to confront my wife to tell her she couldn’t bring a drink to the pool as most people had been doing openly during our entire 2 week stay. I said to her, you offer no service and still harass my wife. I then threw out my drink. As we were leaving she said in a completely sarcastic and very rude manner, “Have a nice day” to which I responded with a salute. I was then attacked by her “friend” the manager (some guy named Paul) who proceeded to lose it completely and threatened to follow us across the road and assault us. He told me to take off and never come back. He also said that I should go back to Canada or wherever I came from. I am a 62 year old man and don’t need to be threatened by some 35 year old nut job with serious issues not to mention a very real problem with Canadians. This is to not why we come to Kauai. As my Tongan friends here on the island told me “crazy guy wants beef.”We will never return to this property. I have been travelling the world all of my life, I have never had a worse experience. On our last night someone climbed up to the balcony next door in what appeared to be an attempt to break in to a second floor unit which was occupied. Thankfully no one was hurt. What is going on here. When I called the front desk all they would say was that they didn’t really know what was happening but not to worry. Some idiot is climbing the building to break in and I should not worry. There are many beautiful places and people on Kauai, so, please come and visit, just don’t stay here.
