Sunset drinks on the balcony

We did not stay here, but ventured over to watch sunset. Traditional St. Regis champagne saber toast a few minutes before the sunset goes down. Unparalleled views of Hanalei Bay. Tasty (but expensive) appetizers and cocktails, totally worth it.

What a view!

I have stayed at numerous hotels from Bali to deluxe Italian hotels. The view at the St Regis Princeville is nothing short of spectacular as you gaze across Hanalei Bay to a backdrop of lush volcanic mountains. It is the best view I have seen and that includes gorgeous Amalfi coast views (close). The service level from check in to check out was executed as well as any Four Seasons you could name. Just not a lot to dislike in this pristine location with infinity pool and beach options to satisfy the most discriminating. Hawaii is always fun, but staying at this special resort takes it to another level!

My husband and I have been staying at the Princeville property since the early 1990's when it was the Sheraton Princeville. It has been one of our favorite properties, in one of the most beautiful locations in the world. Several years ago the property went through a major renovation, and emerged as the St. Regis Princeville. The end result of the updating was an increase in price of at least 50%, and climbing, and the removal of all decor "Hawaiian". Apparently the hotel group decided that having pineapple motifs and the like was just too kitschy. Gone were the beautiful inlaid marble floors, now covered over in hardwood. Gone were the lovely chandeliers, now replaced with nice, but characterless lighting. If you were plopped down blindfolded into the lobby of this hotel, or into any of the rooms, you would experience a more sleek, pan-Asian feel, but would have no idea in which location you were. It would look nice, but indistinguishable from hundreds of other hotels around the world. The restaurants were also revamped. With the exception of the breakfast buffet, which is still wonderful, the menus are far more limited, and again, much more expensive. Frequently when we walk by the main restaurant in the evening, there are just a handful of diners eating there. Such a shame, as the view and setting are spectacular.Despite the fact that I don't think the renovations were improvements, we still continued to book this hotel, as the location cannot be matched. However, over the course of the last several years, I feel the experience has continued to diminish. Each year that we go back, it feels more and more crowded at the pool and beach areas. It should be noted that the pool and beach are lovely, but sized to accommodate the number of guests at this property, which is moderate in size. The lounge chairs are now packed side by side, both at the pool, and the beach. This was not the case before. Cabanas have been erected such that often there is no view of the beach from the pool, or even from the beach if you are seated behind a cabana. Why not just move to a different lounge chair to get the view? Because unless you get to the pool by 8 or 9 am, and pile bags and books on the lounge to save that chair, you will not have a choice of lounges later. The whirlpools are packed. When you are seated, you are mere inches from the guests lying beside you. You can hear every word that is spoken, from every conversation around you, and enjoy all of the many delightful children who are also near you. There are not separate adult and family areas at this property. For the last few years I've been thinking that the popularity of this property has been growing year after year, as the pool has become ever more crowded, despite the significant increase of lounge chairs. The mystery has been "why is the pool and beach so packed during the day, yet the lobby and restaurant so empty at night?". Finally this year I found the answer to this mystery. As it turns out, there is another SPG property about a mile down the road. This property does not have a beach. This property is a fraction of the cost of the St. Regis. The guests of this property are allowed to come over to the St. Regis and use the facilities. So there you have it--- A pool and beach that are not huge are accommodating two hotels. Why pay hundreds of dollars per night for the St. Regis, only to be packed in like sardines at the pool? What premium benefits are there now to staying at this supposed premium property? Why even go to a beach property if you cannot enjoy the beach scene? The cheapest room during December costs a minimum of $600/night. Those rooms are right above or next to the kiddie pool. You cannot open the window of your room from the hours of 8am-8pm without hearing screaming children. If you'd like a room away from the kiddie pool, that will cost another couple of hundred dollars, and up. I can no longer recommend this hotel. The rooms are comfortable, but the overall experience is just not worth the price anymore. There is little value at this point. There are other destinations and hotels where $600-$800/night will get you the comfort, serenity, and experience you'd expect at this price point.

Don't go

The resort is beautiful - go. The nail salon is poor - don't go. My wife booked a pedicure with the Starfruit & Coconut Milk treatment, plus paraffin bath. First of all, no nail technician was present to do the pedicure. Secondly, the esthitician who did the work admitted "I only help out when we are overbooked." My wife was the only last present. Next, after the paraffin treatment, the girl fumbled through clipping her nails and filed the edges, but no buffing, shining or smoothing of the nail was done. None. The girl applied the polish like she was using a trowel. My wife pointed out the polish wasn't adhering well due to no nail preparation, but the girl didn't listen. She applied 2 coats before saying, "that's the best I can do." It was a shambles. All of this for $145.Ladies and you metros, save your money and go anywhere else.
