Aston at Papakea Resort
- What's Included
Since this was our first trip to Maui, we weren't sure what we were in for, but we decided we wanted an ocean front room and Aston at Papakea had some available during our scheduled visit. Our condo was on the second floor and was a great ocean front room overlooking the sea wall and reef. The condo was very nice, with air conditioning for those times when the heat/humidity got to be too much. The sunset views from the condo were beautiful, and the lanai a great place to sit for that morning cup of coffee. The bedroom in the unit we had didn't have very good air circulation in the bedroom. The bedroom sits at the back of the condo, so the air doesn't flow very well back into the bedroom from the air conditioner, and it was too noisy with too much light to open the jalousies to get air flow through at night. The resort staff that we dealt with were very responsive when we had to call about a clothes dryer not working. The one thing I would say about this resort, is that it does not have beach access in front of the resort. The property fronts a sea wall -- which is cool in it's own right with the crashing waves and the reef. You can get to a beach with a bit of walking, but if you are looking for a sandy beach-front vacation, this is probably not the place to go. Although we enjoyed our stay at Papakea very much, it is a pretty busy resort, so we'd probably choose a quieter location when we go back to Maui.
We stay here every year or two and just love it. It is a quiet resort that is owned mostly by private owners that rent them on VRBO and places like that. A few are owned timeshares as well. Since they are privately owned, it's not always fully booked and can be quiet in the off seasons. The resort has two pools with several BBQs around them. There is a nice grassy area with great sunset views. The grounds are beautiful and very we'll kept. They have 2 putting greens and you can borrow putters from the lobby. They also have shuffleboard and tennis courts. Thereis a great grocery store right across the street, an ABC store and several restaurants closeby.. No sandy beach, but you can just walk next door and use the neighbors sand.
We rented our suite through an individual owner, not through the front desk, so we were able to pick our view. The resort has no restaurants on site, so you do need to travel to eat out. For us, it was great. A large grocery store is within walking distance. Weber grills on site are open to all and our suite had a newer kitchen. There is no "beach" but it does start at the edge of the resort. Pools and grounds are very well maintained. We will be back.
We own at VI and used our points to book one of the 23 (or is it 25?) units VI owns within Papakea. The one b/r unit had everything we needed, even if you wanted to do some serious cooking (which we didn't); even had an ocean view which was fantastic. Does not have a tub, only walk-in shower. Sat out on the Lanai every morning and evening enjoying the weather and breeze. Didn't miss AC as the cross winds cooled us off; also has ceiling fans in both the bedroom and lounge area, and a freestanding fan which together did the trick. Two pools each with a hot tub and 5/6 gas BBQs - the latter we used almost daily; we love BBQ'ing while watching the sun go down over the ocean. Immaculate maintenance of the grounds, gardens etc. Only downside (for us) was that the resort had NO fitness facility ... for some this may not be a big deal given the lovely weather out and plenty of flat walking/running trails, but still something we missed. Oh, and no beach - so if you're looking for a swimmable beach to wade in from, this resort is not for you. Also no daily service - we didn't mind that as we do our our cleaning, even doing our sheets/towels a couple of times during our stay. Not the place to be if you expect full service. Remember the daily resort fee! Overall we didn't have any complaints as all the possible downsides were known to us so we went in well prepared. No surprises - we will go back.
We had a pleasant stay at this resort. We had unit A302. It was very nicely decorated and seemed recently updated. At this resort the owner of the individual condos decorate differently so it could be some condos aren't as good as the one we got. I read all the reviews before staying and realized that maybe this was the case with people getting some bad accommodations. We didn't have issues with the staff here and we thought they were all pleasant and helpful. We booked through Costco travel and we didn't have any issues with checkin or check out. Here are some cons though, there is only a seawall with stairs leading down straight into the ocean water. If you want to lounge near the ocean you can but it's on a green lawn not sand. There really is no beach there but ocean access. They charge an additional one time 89 dollar cleaning fee and a 17 dollar daily resort fee. Those charges add up the longer you stay. There is no daily maid service unless you request it and it will cost you. We didn't stay for long so just went without the service. Now for some pros: We listed on our reservation that it was our anniversary and when we got to our room there was a bottle of champagne, a small box of chocolate macadamia nuts and a tote bag for us.That was really nice of them and it was complimentary. They have one heated pool and one non heated. Both are clean as well as the spas. They also have barbecues there so you can have your own little pool party if you wish. They also have a shower and bathroom right next to the pool and a seating area. Overall we enjoyed this resort but we didn't like the extra costs of the resort and cleaning fees as well as the fact that there is no sandy beach. If the price is right I'd recommend this but don't forget to include the fees in your overall cost.
