Aston Maui Kaanapali Villas
- What's Included
This property is one of the view remaining vacation spots that reminds you of Old Hawaii. It sits on over 11 acres of beautifully landscaped property along the Pacific Ocean. If you like chaos, this is not for you. But if you prefer a laid back, relaxed environment that is still centrally located you have found your paradise. There is a free shuttle to multiple places in Ka'anapali, including The Whaler's Village with great shopping, multiple Oceanside restaurants with live music and access to a great beach. Check out Ka'anapali Beach Ministry in Leilani's restaurant Sunday morning at 8:00 am. Stay at "MKV" and take advantage of infinite amenities just one shuttle ride away.
This place is kind of simple. I knew that I as getting into something simple, so that was fine. The unit we were in was well equipped and clean. Had a nice partial view of the ocean. I didn't particularly care for where our unit was located, but that's really not a knock on the resort, but more like a knock on my distaste of walking to the pool. :) The beach is lovely. There aren't any beach chairs on the beach, but rather, on the grassy area before the beach. One must rent the cabanas. What is a little annoying is that there is a resort fee and there aren't that many amenities to justify it (pool and free internet - unless I missed something.) We paid $30 for snorkel equipment we didn't end up using, sadly, because the ocean was just too fierce at the time. Also, the older I get, the more important this becomes to me: no bell service. We were on the 2nd floor, no elevator, and no bell service. I traveled with my husband and 3 small kids. Albeit, I have boys and I made them drag most of the stuff up to the room, I am still spoiled and want bell service. The food at the restaurant is great. We cooked most of our meals, but ate a couple of times at the restaurant. Great staff, food, and service. Everyone at the resort is incredibly friendly. One thing: I did book this room on booking.com. It turns out, I paid $100 more per night than I needed to. I won't make that mistake again. The beach is nice, but beware of its fickle nature. It went from calm to angry in a matter of moments.
We stayed at the villas for a week and absolutely loved it. The location is perfect, close to Whalers village shopping centre - you can take a free shuttle or walk for 20 min. It is 5 min from the beach, and our villa had an ocean view. All villas are different inside as they are owed by different people. We stayed at Coconut building, on the ground floor, number 156. Fully equipped kitchen, large wardrobe, safe, wife, and a terrace to have breakfast or drinks. We were provided with towels, snorkelling gear, beach chairs. There are 2 supermarkets within a short drive that have everything you need if you decide to cook yourself. We cooked dinner once, and had our own breakfast every day. There is a small restaurant on the territory, overlooking the beach. We ate there once, the food and cocktails were decent. The restaurant is open till 9pm. We also ate dinners at Whalers village, as well as drove to Mamas Fish which is an hour drive. The beach is the best in the area, imho. We tried other beaches within the driving distance but they are smaller and more crowded. The ocean is rough, so if you are not a good swimmer like me, watch out for waves and current. Drags you in with no mercy. We stayed at the condo pools a lot, there have two. One is smaller and warmer and another is a bit bigger next to the restaurant, both open till 10pm. Hot tubs are really hot, we were not able to sit there more than 30 seconds. In general, very quite resort, many older people and families with children. If you are looking for a party spot, go elsewhere. Was perfect for us, we had a few early morning tours so partying was not on the schedule this time.
We have stayed many times in MKV, often in the same condo. We love it. We're usually steps away from the pool and the ocean. And when we have stayed in the main building, it is just as easy to enjoy all the facilities. The most important/best part of the hotel is the staff. They're all wonderful, caring people. I wish I could live there!
If the Ka'anapali Villas is your choice because you want a villa/suite and it is the most affordable option, you will have a fine stay. If you do not expect to do much more than land there every night after daily activities away from the resort, it is a good option. There is nothing objectionable about the property though it is not a much of a resort. I rated it three stars because that represents average. It is in desperate need of a face lift. You can spend your day at the little pool area, but you'll feel like you could have done the same in Florida--at a much nicer pool. There is a small restaurant, but the food was really not memorable and you can find amazing food in Maui, even on a budget. For activities, you will end up driving down to the fun and energetic area south of Black Rock and in front of all the other great resorts. There is nothing going on in front of this property. If you want to snorkel, go to the Westin next door or better yet, head to Black Rock area. If you want to take a paddleboard or surfing lesson, you guessed it, head over to Black Rock. You can walk there, but it is a bit of a hike if you have a family. You'll end up paying to park down there and you will have to drag towels and everything along with you. My advice, unless it is your budget option, pay a bit more and stay somewhere else.
