I'm not big into the touristy resort scene, so I scoured Airbnb and VRBO for a more down-to-earth local vibe that still had top-line amenities and ocean access. We scored big with this unit listed by Quam Properties, which is literally RIGHT ON THE WATER. Every morning I made coffee in our kitchen (which had brand new stainless steel appliances and granite counter tops, mind you), sat out on the patio which jutted out over the ocean, and watched the sun sparkle over the water. I walked barefoot downstairs and around the corner of the building right into the water, where I could swim or snorkel for hours. There's a little hose to rinse off too, a pool on the other side, laundry room, etc. Up the road about 5 minutes walking is a small grocery store and coffee shop, tons of other little beach coves within walking distance, and a local bar nearby. The owners of this condo keep it spotless and added nice little Hawaiian touches to make it feel authentic. There's a flat screen tv and the couch pulls out into a queen bed if you have kids or another couple staying with you. We checked it out and it seemed comfy. There's no A/C, but big ceiling fans worked nicely with the breezes coming in the patio sliding doors and windows. This was absolute paradise and I can't recommend this spot enough. I feel like we hit the jackpot by avoiding all the crowded tourist beaches and having ocean access whenever we wanted, with amazing views from our private balcony. It books up fast but Quam Properties is great to work with.
My wife and I loved, loved, loved this place! We aren't into the big, impersonal resorts on Kaanapali that are set back so far from the beach and super crowded. Kahana Reef is very rare in Maui in that your suite is only 20-30 ft from the water. From our lanai, we saw countless turtles swim by daily, whales on several days, all types of boats, paddle boarders, kite surfers, etc. Who needs TV? Bring binoculars! We loved the beach right next door. Super convenient. We played in the water, would come back up to the unit for a drink, go back down to the beach or take a dip in the pool... lovely. The sunsets were amazing from the lanai. The unit itself is perfect for a couple. Our unit was 321 I believe and we loved it. It was on the opposite side of the complex from the pool which we liked and super close to the beach so you could hear the waves. Our unit had everything we needed. We used the onsite BBQs for several of our meals and they looked brand new. Also a great way to meet other guests. Good Chinese food place across the street, Maui Brewing Co. is a 10 min walk away as is Dolly's Sports Pub and Miso Phat Sushi. Kahana is a perfect location as you are close to Lahaina, Kaanapali, Kapalua yet far enough away from their crowds. Kahana Reef was our oasis and we couldn't wait to get back to it to have a glass of vino on the lanai and watch the sunset. This is not a five-star resort so if that's what you are looking for, this is not the place for you. I would highly, highly recommend Kahana Reef and can't wait to come back!
this is an amazing place. You have to book through Sandy Szymanski on vrbo. One bedroom one bath unit with decent size well equipped kitchen. The view from the balcony is definitely worth a million dollars.
We stayed at Kahana Reef for 1 week in October 2016. We had a great time. The view from the living room and lanai are amazing. The property is extremely peaceful, quite and well manicured. Our particular condo had been renovated and was very nice. The furniture was nice. The kitchen was updated with granite counters, new cabinets and was well stocked with dishes and cooking essentials. The bathroom had also been updated. However we did walk by and see several units that were not updated . We even went into one that was for sale. I would not have been happy with one of those units. Very old and outdated. So be careful which unit you rent!! As for the property itself; it was very clean. The lawns were manicured daily. There is a pool which we did not use. It was pretty simple. They have lawn chairs available at the retaining wall. People did use them, but there were always some available. The only downsides to this property was the swim beach next to it is pretty small (not very good), and the parking spaces are tiny (glad we were in a rental). There are better beaches within a couple of miles that we used. It just would have been nice to not have to pack an ice chest and car, find parking then lug it all to another beach area. However I don't think the price can be beat. I could not find any other units (properties) that were renovated and had such a great view, that weren't at least double the price. There were mainly older couples and young families here. Not a party place. I should also note that it is not air conditioned. That was not a problem for us in October. I'm sure it got a little warm during the day. But we were gone most of that time. We opened the windows and turned on the fans at night and were comfortable. The bedroom windows open to the street, so you could hear cars going by and an occasional loud talking person. But I wouldn't let that deter you. Our owner provided ice chest, beach umbrella and chairs (we appreciated that). This is not a fancy resort but I would most certainly go back.
This beach is right I front of our resort..it is relatively short but easy to get to. There's a reef a few hundred feet out and the waves break there at all times.. we have been here for over a week and have never seen more than a handful of people using it.. other than at sunset when just about everybody will come down to take a picture of the amazing sunset here
