Kahana Reef Condo
- What's Included
Location: Oceanfront in Kahana and 53km from the Kahului Int'l Airport.
The view is spectacular...Each unit has a private lanai overlooking the ocean. Turtles often swim right up to the steps. You could never find a nice resort with the beautiful views you'll have here, for anywhere near the price. BUT no air conditioner. There is a ceiling fan. Our unit wasn't remodeled but it was clean.
I bring my equipment for snorkeling when I come to the islands because specially in Maui you are surrounded by reefs no so far from shore. Kahana reef is one of the best in the world during the early morning you can see a great variety of fish without going too far out perfect for fist time snorkeling
Pros: The view is spectacular. Each unit has a private lanai overlooking the ocean. Turtles often swim right up to the steps. We saw a handful of turtles every day we were there. The unit we stayed in (316) was clean and very spacious. They also had boogey boards, beach chairs and snorkel gear in our unit, which was awesome. Loved having a kitchen so we could eat in a few meals each day, that saved us quite a bit. Room was clean and well kept. There was always plenty of parking, which is nice for that area. Cons: The furniture definitely could use to be updated. The pull out sofa mattress seems quite old and was lumpy, not very comfortable for our kids to sleep on. The bed in the bedroom however, was nice. The kitchen could also use an update, but all appliances worked fine and other than being old, everything worked well. I do wish it had a Sandy beach right outside the hotel. There is a rock ledge with a drop off, so you have to walk down a bit to get to a nice Sandy beach. If you don't mind driving, just drive to kapalua bay (4-5 minute drive) and spend your beach days there. The snorkeling is far better than anything right around Kahana Reef. No room service, it's not a hotel, so plan on bringing lots of quarters to do your own laundry to wash towels. All in all, not a 5 star resort, but quiet and beautiful. You could never get this view in a 5 star resort for anywhere close I'm price. Just make sure to get on level 3 or 4, the views are better higher up. If you end up on level one behind the pull (about room 103-108), you won't have the view. You'll be looking at the fence around the pook.
Stayed here in room 204 with my 17 year old daughter July 2017. The location is wonderful! Right on the water with a decent pool. It was very quiet and private, the pool was not in use a lot by other people which was great and the room had a view of the pool so we could always see if it was free. Sitting on the loungers in the quiet and listening to the waves hit the shore was amazing. Turtles swam right up to the rock wall and the snorkeling was good right off the grounds. A nice beach is just a very short walk away with a smaller beach right off the grounds. The unit itself left a bit to be desired. The screen door was a bit broken so difficult to use. It was quite hot in the living area and the stand up fan that was provided also was broken and made a lot of noise when turned on. The bathroom door had peeling paint at the bottom. Other than that, it was well equipped with everything you could need including boogie boards, beach chairs, and pool noodles. A few minor fixes would have made it ideal.
I'm not big into the touristy resort scene, so I scoured Airbnb and VRBO for a more down-to-earth local vibe that still had top-line amenities and ocean access. We scored big with this unit listed by Quam Properties, which is literally RIGHT ON THE WATER. Every morning I made coffee in our kitchen (which had brand new stainless steel appliances and granite counter tops, mind you), sat out on the patio which jutted out over the ocean, and watched the sun sparkle over the water. I walked barefoot downstairs and around the corner of the building right into the water, where I could swim or snorkel for hours. There's a little hose to rinse off too, a pool on the other side, laundry room, etc. Up the road about 5 minutes walking is a small grocery store and coffee shop, tons of other little beach coves within walking distance, and a local bar nearby. The owners of this condo keep it spotless and added nice little Hawaiian touches to make it feel authentic. There's a flat screen tv and the couch pulls out into a queen bed if you have kids or another couple staying with you. We checked it out and it seemed comfy. There's no A/C, but big ceiling fans worked nicely with the breezes coming in the patio sliding doors and windows. This was absolute paradise and I can't recommend this spot enough. I feel like we hit the jackpot by avoiding all the crowded tourist beaches and having ocean access whenever we wanted, with amazing views from our private balcony. It books up fast but Quam Properties is great to work with.
