OverviewLocated across the street from the best swimmable beach in Kihei, the Kihei Akahi is a fantastic value with comfortable accommodations. Spacious rooms & great location make this condominium resort a Canadian favourite.
Location: On South Kihei Road, across the street from Kamaole Beach Park II. Approximately 30 min from the Kahului airport.
I am writing about one newly renovated condo. This condo at the Kihei Akahi, C 313, was as advertised, with its web pictures being accurate. Lovely and quiet when daytime construction was not taking place in nearby condos which were being renovated during October 2017.Everything felt new upon arrival and really clean. 'Maui Vision's' welcome basket of fruits and chocs. were delicious. The 'on-island' property manager was very helpful/efficient and arrived shortly after calling for help during my second day. The 100% cotton linens were fully appreciated by me because of my sensitive skin. So many lovely pool/beach towels and bathroom towels were thick and fluffy. I loved the fact that the whole condo had floor tiles and no carpeting; much easier to clean especially after windy days and cooler.I would recommend this particular condo C313 to everyone. Note all the condos have different owners who upgrade whenever they please.I noted an early review about silverfish and roaches. I saw none and I was in this condo for 3 weeks of Oct. and all of Nov. 2017. Its location away from the elevators keeps loud voices, rolling suitcases and elevator noises to a minimum. It is close to both pools. Its car park space is very convenient.'Hawaii Moons' natural food store (a 5-minute walk) has a great salad bar and hot bar to buy from so one can eat in the store, in peace on the condo lanai or elsewhere, on beach or in the park across the road from this complex which is the best beach for swimming, Kamaole 2 beach.Kihei Akahi has lovely grounds and is well looked after. Flowers seem to blossom everywhere. Gardeners appear to work a few hours every day and there is a security guard on duty all night which gives one a safe feeling, making a trip very relaxing.
We are stationed on the mainland and travel home to Maui every few years to visit family when we can. We do the touristy thing and book a hotel so everyone can enjoy the pool, and so we don't crowd their homes. This year we couldn't book at our normal rental, so we decided to try Kihei Akahi because of the price and the fact it's within the same management group.Pros and Cons- Pro - Steps away from the beach, just across the street. I'm use to walking a few blocks, or across entire properties just to get there. Our building was really close to South Kihei Road and Kam II- Con - The pools are kind of small and the water was way too cold. Additionally, every time we went to swim, they had not appeared to have been cleaned.- Pro - Check in, and out, was super easy. The doors have number pads so there's no keys or cards to worry about. Parking is assigned and visitor parking is ample.- Con - Units are individually owned. Maintenance and repair generally falls on the owner. Our unit had issues like a slow drain in the tub, that after 5 minutes would have the water past your ankles in the shower. There was a water alarm behind the toilet but nowhere else (like a flood alarm), that says to me it's been an issue for a while.- Pro - Most owners will supply beach chairs and toys. Some units have lanai furniture. We had a lovely area outside where we could sit in the morning, but couldn't because we didn't have a covered lanai.- Con - You are expected to empty your own air conditioning unit's condensation pan. Window units build up waste condensation and if you don't empty it... it splashes down on the unsuspecting people below you. IE my family trying to enjoy our breakfast- Pro - There weren't ants.- Con - There were cockroaches. But it is Hawaii, you'll have to learn to deal with some bugs and geckos etc.- Pro - There is internet and cable- Con - It is SLOW. And don't think you will get a signal anywhere in the rear of the condo. I could only use my phone on the lanai, and in one spot right next to the window, which just happened to be right above the A/C. So we could call people, or we could have A/C...- Con - There were no windows in the bedroom. There were windows outside of the bedroom. But they were boarded up on the inside to make a closet. No overhead fan was installed, the ceilings were presumably too low. Instead all that circulated air was a standing fan in the corner. It was not ideal. The bedroom was too hot, dark and sticky to sleep in and we ended up spending most of the nights on the sofa bed.- Pro - It was CHEAP compared to what we usually have to pay to travel home. All in all, we were just glad to be home again, for two weeks this time. And happy to spend time with friends and family that we don't get to see that often. It may not have been the best vacation rental, and we certainly won't stay here again. We wouldn't let any of it ruin our vacation. Just be wary if you book yourself.
We used the RCI timeshare option to trade for 1 week in building D with a unit in the middle of the 3rd floor. We learned that the entire Kihei Akahi complex is owned by individuals who decide how they wish to rent their units. Some use a property manager, Expedia, RCI, etc. Our RCI exchange was great. 1 bedroom unit with a washer/dryer with supplied detergent, large kitchen with granite and all dishes, pots/pans needed if we wanted to cook. The bathroom shower (no tub) was updated and very clean. There was only 1 sink so that was a bit cramped but lots of hooks for towels. We were 2 adults and no children and this unit would not have been suitable for 2 couples. The condo supplied beach towels, beach chairs and an umbrella. That was very nice, plenty of sheets, pillows, bath towels. There wasn't any A/C for the bedroom, only a fan but in December there were great trade winds and the bedroom was cool. The living room/dining area did have an A/C unit but we didn't have to use often due to the temperature. The lanai faced the ocean and it was great. Parking was assigned. There are 2 pools, no hot tubs. Several BBQ grill. Landscaping was great and well maintained outside. While we were there, pest control had a quarterly visit but that might have been specific to the RCI unit. There is a sandy beach at Kamaole II beach that is right down the road. No need to move the car. Plenty of walking area on the beach. Also restaurants in walking distance. Driving to snorkeling areas was easy. We did speak to 1 owner who offered to rent their unit to us in 2018. We toured his unit, same 1 bedroom size, but carpet instead of tile in the RCI unit, he didn't update the kitchen or bathroom. So you have to be careful when renting in this complex: ask to see photos of the unit you are renting.
This is a great location. It is within easy walking distance of restaurants and shops. The beach is right across the street and you don't need a car to have a great time. The complex has a variety of units that are individually owned (but managed through agencies) so the quality and amenities vary greatly. I stayed in Unit 217C. On the plus side, this unit has a nice clean shower and bathroom. On the negative side the furniture is dated and worn. The light coloured carpet is not a good choice for a rental unit on the ground floor. A hardwood or tile floor would have looked so much better. But the worst thing was the bugs. I was told that the units were 'treated' regularly, but I was totally grossed out by the bugs. I am assuming they were cockroaches. I arrived late on a Thursday and it was Friday night by the time I realized what a problem they were. Particularly in the kitchen. There were crawling on the counter, in the sink, inside dishes and I even found one in the cutlery drawer. I informed the office on Saturday morning and was asked to take a picture and send it in, although the problem couldn't be dealt with on the weekend. I took the picture and sent it to the email supplied by the office. It kept bouncing back, so I sent a second email to the rental agency. Like I said, the kitchen was the worst, and I stopped using it and spent the rest of my holiday eating out. An unexpected expense and a hassle seeing I specifically wanted a unit with a kitchen to prepare some of my own meals. The office told me, the unit could be sprayed if the owner agreed, but that sounded rather toxic, so I told them to wait until after I left. My daughter and her family stayed in a lovely 2 bedroom unit that was facing the beach. Their unit was immaculately clean and they didn't have any problem with bugs. So do your homework and choose wisely. Anyway it was a great holiday as long as I wasn't in my unit.
We stayed at Kihei Akahi in October 2017. We were with a 3 year old. We were in building C on the 4th floor - 417. We had no issues with securing a parking spot. We arrived late at night and were provided with the door code via phone. The next morning, we drove to the office to get our information. Keep in mind that you must obtain your parking permit from the building office which is to your left when you enter the complex. While checking in is a short drive away from the complex. The location of the property is fantastic. You can walk to a number of restaurants, grocery stores, retail shops, coffee shop, etc. Our favourite place was Coconut's. We had seared ahi and poke bowls almost every night. The best part is that it is right across from some of the best beaches on Maui - Kamaole II and Kamaole III. We liked Kamaole III better because the water was a bit calmer. We also saw turtles there every day, at least a few a day. The unit was outdated, however, stocked adequately and very comfortable. The living/kitchen area is very spacious. There were plenty of towels, kitchenware, laundry and dishwashing detergent. The washer and dryer worked well. We had a nice view of the grounds. There is only one AC unit for the entire place and it is in the living room. If you have challenges managing some heat and humidity, sleeping in the bedroom can be a bit of a problem, however, there are plenty of windows that can be open that allow for a wonderful breeze. We never felt uncomfortable. The temperatures were around 28 to 32 C degrees during the day.Overall, a great stay. For our next trip to Hawaii, we are planning to visit a different island, however, if our path leads to Maui we will definitely consider Kihei Akahi for its, value, location, and comfort.
