Studio at Kihei Akahi, Maui

I stayed in C201 at the Akahi for 66 nights, Jan - March 15, 2017.The studio size is good, bathroom good, floor good, all reno'd recently. The owner, who is resident on Maui, is very helpful, trying to solve any problems that arise. What is great is the privacy the studios offer. No balcony of another condo attached, or within hearing distance. The studios have lanais (balconies) on the side of the buildings. It is not a place for people who like/or need firm beds. Unfortunately the recent reno. did not include the murphy bed which has ancient springs and a soft mattress on top of them. The lovely flooring which gives the appearance of real wood, does not continue under the bed to meet the wall. There is still some v.old carpeting under the head of this murphy bed....not healthy... People who like shade and a cool wind will like this studio. If you like sunshine on your lanai, you need to reserve a studio above the second floor. Shade is provided nearly all day by leafy trees growing right beside the south side of the lanai.Location is good, close to the office, the tennis court and the lower pool. Kamaole beach 2 is across the Sth. Kihei Rd. just outside this Akahi complex. The 3 Kamaole beaches, 1, 2, 3, are considered the safest for swimming on the island. Kihei is considered a 'drought' area of this island, except this past 2016-2017 winter which was the strangest on record according to Maui's inhabitants. Storm winds, flash floods from heavy tropical rains closing roads for periods of time. Trees were even blown down. The temperature was always warm, in lovely Hawaiian style. The guests and residents of this large (2 x 6 storey bldgs + 2 x 2-storey) complex were very friendly and mostly helpful to each other.

Basically average at the most

We stayed from March 27 - April 6, 2017. We stayed in Building C suite 608 and were so thankful to have been on the top floor of this building. We traveled with three other couples and I honestly believe we were the lucky ones. The three other couples were placed in suites between the main floor and the second floor of Building C & D (C109, C208 and D208).I have traveled to the Caribbean six times to date (Bahamas (2), Cuba, Jamaica (2) and Eleuthera) and this was unbelievable in comparison. What bother me the most was how bad it was and the gross number of bugs (cockroaches) in each of these suites. I have never seen so many cockroaches in that many rooms. Our suite (C608) in particular was average. The kitchen although clean has never been updated and looks like it could use a good refresh. It could also use a larger frying pan as they only had one of the smallest pans you can buy. The bathroom and powder room were clean but the same, as the kitchen and really needs to be renovated. They could also use some newer and nicer towels and as well as more than just one dish washcloth and towel. The bedroom was decent with lots of storage a good size closet and had a nice feeling. It also had a decent king size bed. I really enjoyed the fact that we had beach chairs and coolers for us to use. My only concern/worry with leaving was if we were bringing any cockroaches home. We left all our baggage outside, re-washed all our clothes and thoroughly sprayed all our bags with RAID to ensure none of those little creatures came into our house.Would I stay here again….I do not think so as I just cannot get over the bug infestation.

Unit C511 is excellent

You really can't beat the location of this place. It's a short walk or drive to beaches, restaurants, etc. Sunsets on Kam II are terrific. Nice ocean views from the lanai too. The units are all individually owned and cared for. This one in particular is nicely renovated and well stocked, complete with beach chairs, coolers and an umbrella and boogie boards. With 1 BR and a pullout, we were full with the 3 of us. My only comment is that the knives need sharpening! We would book here again.

D-516 has everything you need for two people

When we first arrived, we didn't go check in. I thought i read somewhere on our agreement that we didn't need to (i could be wrong) but we had to check in eventually because the security guard put a note on our windshield that said we had to get a parking pass in order to park in our spot. Yes, they assign you a parking spot but it's not like the spot has your room number so you don't have to worry about people knowing that you aren't home. There are stairs and elevators. Our room had a combination lock on the door that locked our key inside of it. They also provide a second key copy inside the home. There are additional keys for 2 pools and a tennis court. If you need to, the office has tennis equipment that you can barrow. There is no jacuzzi. There are about 4 buildings next to each other that are ran by Kihei Akahi. The individual condos are actually owned by different owners but the office helps maintain and answer tenant questions. So technically if you had a complaint, the office would most like refer you to your condo owner. D516 was located in the last building. The last building had 6 floors. There was a room above us but we didn't seem to notice any noise from other rooms near by. They have a quiet time rule that runs from 10pm - 8am. Our balcony actually had a nice view of the sunrise. The washer is pretty small. It can fit about 4-5 bath towels at a time. The office does provide you with one little baggie of low suds detergent. But the good thing about this washer/dryer is that it's inside your condo so you can pretty much do as much laundry whenever and however fits your schedule. It just can't run during quiet hours. Tub shower's average. No shampoo was provided, only two little round bars of soap. I did appreciate the tooth brush holder they had by the sink though. It really came in handy. There were no water temperature problems (like when someone else turns on the water while you shower and such). The window ac worked really well. The only downfall was that it has a timer and shuts off after an hour. But then again, our room was small enough to stay cool with that little ac unit. There were also extra plug in fans. I really liked how they had an accordion style door dividing the living room from the kitchen. This allowed the kitchen smells and heat to stay divided from the living room/bed. We did have to purchase an additional roll of toilet paper. The owner was only willing to provide us with 2 rolls. We stayed for 6 days. The kitchen was stocked with pots, pans, plates, silverware, glass cups, salt and pepper, 1 roll of paper towels, 1 bottle of dish soap. There was a sponge under the sink but it had a piece of hair on it so we didn't use it. There were knives, cutting boards, tongs, pretty much everything you need. Microwave, coffee maker, fridge, toaster. Sadly, there was no rice cooker. Lol. A necessity in my family. The couch seemed a little old but not necessarily dirty looking. Maybe it was just the way the fabric felt that made it feel dirty. The bed would squeak when you apply too much pressure but it wasn't too annoying to where it squeaks every time someone tosses and turns. BUT there was a warning about keeping the legs straight to avoid it from collapsing. When we adjusted it one time, it seemed like the legs didn't have a stopping/holding point. Seems like it could possibly be relying solely on a flat surface and balance. There was never a time when it collapsed on us though. Because this bed dropped down from a wall closet thing, the wall doors were 1 foot accordion style that kind of boxed the head of the bed. We occasionally bumped our elbows on those doors. There were additional lamps around the home and a long table that divided the couch/tv from the bed. There was a sufficient supply of towels (hand towels, face towels, bath towels, and 1 beach towel). The was also a nice size closet with hangers. In the closet there was also a supply of beach necessities (ice chest, beach chairs, snorkel gear, some kids sand bucket/shovel toys). It was a sliding glass type of closet. I always enjoy a nice full size mirror. There was also a 3 drawer chest where you can store clothes. The floor was all tile. They also have an app that you can download. I used this app to read about their rules and additional information. You can actually click on a button in the app that checks you out on your last day. Nice and convenient if you're in a rush. There's also WiFi in the home. But please note that not all the rooms are the same. This review is only for d516.

Kihei Akashi D112 not good value

KA is well located across from a patrolled public beach. The common areas are not 'are well maintained and the grounds are beautiful. Unit D112 was disappointing for the high rent ($174 night) that was charged. It is tired and needs updating, especially the bedroom with a filthy carpet that looks to be at least 15years old and a bed that is lumpy and soft. The front end of the unit has been updated and is comfortable but a coffee table would be a useful addition. There are beach chairs but the umbrella is broken.
