OverviewLocated across the street from the best swimmable beach in Kihei, the Kihei Akahi is a fantastic value with comfortable accommodations. Spacious rooms & great location make this condominium resort a Canadian favourite.
Location: On South Kihei Road, across the street from Kamaole Beach Park II. Approximately 30 min from the Kahului airport.
I might have found 2 of the unfriendliest, most unpleasant and possibly unhappiest people in Hawaii. They both work in Kihei Akahi!I arrived to check in at 12pm, and the front office was closed for lunch. Fair enough, I sat on the doorstep of the office and waited for 30 mins. The front office staff unlocked the office door turned the sign over, saw me and then just went back in and close the door behind her. There was no "hi", "aloha", "how can I help you?", "can I help you with your luggage?", absolutely nothing, oh, and not even a hint of a smile. I found it very puzzling especially when other guests saw me at the doorstep, they asked me if i was okay and said hi to me, but nothing from the front office staff. The day after (day 2), I rented a car but I forgot to register for the assigned car spot, so I got a warning saying that I needed to register or the car would get towed (completely my fault). I saw the message on day 3 early morning when I was about to drive and go snorkeling. After snorkeling, I was planning to drive straight to Lahaina, so I called the office to see if I could register for the car spot over the phone. The staff (her name is Vandetta) suggested me to register the car the day after, but I've already got a plan that required me to drive out early, before office hour. This meant that there's a risk of the car getting towed that night. She said "well, it's your choice, you have to make the time to register or if you WANT your car to be towed". I didn't appreciate the patronizing tone. I was there for vacation, sure, I rented a car and I wanted it to be towed......like I'm insane. So, I made a 30 mins detour back to the office before I drove to Lahaina. Vandetta saw me, again, no smile, no hi, no greeting, she greeted me with "which unit are you from?" I tried my best to avoid confrontation, so I completed the required form. She then put out some forms and completed her part of the paperwork. I saw that some of the forms have already been given to me when I checked in, so I politely said "I've actually checked in, I'm just registering the rental car". Before I finished my sentence, she cut me off and replied "Yes, I know that, but this is procedure, I'm writing as fast as I can here" again, with that unpleasant tone. I wasn't even rushing her!!! I tried to explain why I said that, and she grunted, completely ignored me, no apology whatsoever. I took the paperwork and left, she didn't say a word.I met the nicest people in Hawaii (I spent 3 weeks in 3 different islands), I was shocked and completely appalled by this experience. These 2 people don't have the most basic customer service/hospitality skills. I found Maui amazing, but unfortunately these 2 ladies tainted my experience. The condo is decent, good price and have good facilities, but I won't be recommending anyone to stay here unless they improve their service level.
Family oriented part of Maui. There is less tourists there and you see how the locals live. My wife and I found the best Korean restaurant we have ever been to. I recommend the Isana Restaurant to any exmilitary that served in Korea if you want to revisit the best Korean barbecue since leaving Korea
We booked this place via Travelzoo and each unit is privately owned, so there is a lot of variation in the quality of units, but ours was very nice decor and provided everything we needed to eat, sleep and hang out at the beach (e.g. chairs, umbrella, towels, snorkeling gear, etc.)Overall, this is a nice quiet place to stay in southern Kihei.
Made a brief vacation in Kihei for four nights in September. We stayed in unit C-208, an updated 1-bedroom condo in the Kihei Akahi complex; the complex is located directly across the street from Kamahole Beach Park II (about a 2-minute walk from our condo to the sand) and is roughly a 15-minute drive to Makena State Park. There are numerous restaurants w/in short walking distance, as are rental shops and an ABC store. Pros:Affordable.Clean, mostly updated unit.Full kitchen.Washer & dryer in unit.Multiple fans in unit.Unit has free beach chairs (2), boogie boards (4), beach towels (2) & a soft cooler.Proximity to Kihei beaches.Snorkeling at the Kamahole beaches (lots of turtles in the AM).Short walk to restaurants, cafes, shops, etc.Quiet despite location adjacent to Kihei's main drag.Cons:No A/C.Overwhelmingly a positive experience for us, especially considering the off-season rate we paid; would not hesitate to book this exact unit again for another Maui trip. The benefits of a full kitchen and in-unit washer & dryer can not be overstated...makes both dining and packing so much easier. The addition of free beach items (chairs, boogie boards, etc.) puts it over the top. No more resorts or hotels for us!
This place is a good place to stay if you don't plan on spending a long time in your room while on vacation. It's not luxurious, but clean enough with a kitchen, bathroom, bed, and washer/dryer (which was the best feature). It's similar to a days-inn, without the room service/daily cleaning. Bed was a bit uncomfortable. Location was good - across from kamaole beach and near restaurants (Fred's, da kitchen, Cafe o'lei) and grocery store (foodland). Customer service was good - my emails were answered promptly and thoroughly. (Thanks KDV!) This made our check-in process easy after the main office was closed (we arrived after 5pm). Pool area was fine. Simple rectangular pool with an outdoor kitchen area for BBQ-ing. Cleanliness was just ok - you are getting what you pay for here. Bathroom was not the most clean and floors felt a little grimey, but we didn't spend much time in the room anyway. Beach towels were included, as well as shower towels, bed sheets, and some other items (hair dryer, hand soap, paper towels, toilet paper, laundry detergent, etc.). There was a telephone too, for making local calls, which was helpful. Bring your own shampoo and body soap. You'll have to empty the AC water bucket yourself or you will be charged extra if it runs off onto another person's lanai. Overall, an ok place to stay if you plan on exploring Maui for most of the day and don't need a fancy pool or other luxurious features.
