Kihei Surfside Condo
- What's Included
My wife and two kids (ages 9 and 5) just returned from a great eight night stay at the Kihei Surfside (Unit 513). I have stayed at the Surfside twice before (in 1996 and 2012) and have never been disappointed. As our first trip here with kids, it proved even better than we could have hoped. Located on the oceanfront on south end of S. Kihei Road, just before the posh Wailea area, it's really in the perfect spot. If you go north, you're just a couple minutes from plenty of dining and shopping options. If you go south, you hit the really fancy (and pricey!) resorts, which have some nice walking areas, more expensive shops, and a number of them host luaus (we went to the Grand Luau at Honua'ula at the Grand Wailea). The Surfside is a condominium complex, so the units are individually owned. As such they are not all uniform, and decor and upgrades vary. In the three times we've been, we've stayed in three different units and all have been comfortable and well furnished and equipped. If you go off-season, it's not hard to find a rate well under $200 a night. The grounds are impeccably maintained, with a huge lawn populated with palm trees and featuring a putting green overlooking the ocean; a nice, refreshing pool; BBQ grills for use; lawn games, books, and DVDs to borrow; and plenty of parking. As mentioned, the location could not be better, especially if you have young kids. The Surfside doesn't have it's own beach, per se. It's all cragy lava rock right off the lawn, which makes for great tides pools, but not great swimming. However, a two minute walk and you're on neighboring Keawakapu beach, which is a terrific beach. Soft tan sand makes for great swimming and castle building. On the north end of the beach and continuing all along the front of the Surfside property, the old lava flows turn into a coral reef and snorkeling is good, especially in the mornings when the water is calmest. We saw tons of fish and several turtles. All day long the waves are small enough for young kids to play in safely, while still sizable enough for some boogie boarding and body surfing for older kids and adults. The north end of the beach, closest to the Surfside and another condo complex can get a little crowded, but a short walk down further south and you'll be able to easily pick out a nice sandy spot. And even when the near end is "crowded" it's nothing compared to the more touristy areas. Especially with younger kids, Keawakapu is really the perfect beach.Speaking of crowds, that's another great thing about the Surfside. It never seems crowded AT ALL. I've been in August, October, and May, so probably not peak times really, but I've never felt there were too many people around. All the other guests, mostly older retired folks it seemed on this trip, were super nice.Since it's a condo complex and not a hotel, there isn't a lot by way of staff. There was really just the guy working in the office, who was very helpful. All the other grounds or cleaning staff we did happen to bump into were very friendly. The Surfside feels like a hidden gem and hopefully it stays that way. Until there is some compelling reason to do otherwise, which I don't foresee any time soon, there is no other place I plan on staying while in Maui. Unless you seek a very rugged, spartan or a fancy pants resort experience, the Surfside would make an excellent choice for your stay.
I don't usually write reviews because then more people know about it and then it's busier and so on and so on............BUT...............I must thoroughly endorse and recommend the Kihei Surfside Condos in S. Kihei, Maui. After my 8th year in a row visiting I am still in love and would not stay anywhere on Maui but here. There are no closer oceanfront condos to the oceanside in all of Maui - and the endless hours sitting on "my lanai" watching turtles by the dozens, whales, dolphins and once some kind of manta ray played for an hour right in front of me. Within walking distance to great restaurants and amenities and right next to one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Maui . The condos are all fully equipped with everything and anything you need, the grounds are immaculately kept, with pool on site, barbecues, small golf area, bocce, etc.. The ambience and tone of the resort is set by management though. They are friendly, helpful and professional. Never failing to deal with a problem - if there are any - and always keeping everything in top order. On my last trip I made a stupid mistake and stashed an envelope containing a large amount of cash under the mattress (yes I know dumb) and didn't remember about it until I was in the Maui airport lineup to go home. Taking a chance I left a frantic message at the office of the Surfside and within a half hour of me being home I received the friendly and reassuring call that my envelope of cash had been found and would be in tomorrow's mail back to me. I couldn't believe it! Not only because of this - but because of everthing at the Surfside - I give my 150% recommendation - just don't tell anyone!! shhhh
We have been coming to Maui for years and always try to stay at the Kihei Surfside. we have tried other places and nothing compares. the location, the friendly people and particularly the management of Kate the general manager makes this an unbeatable place to stay. On a recent trip we lost our rental car keys and had no way to get back to the airport to get a spare key and had no groceries etc and needed the car to shop. Kate drove us to the airport to pick up a spare set and would not accept any gas money! She got us out of a tight spot and we were so gratefull. Since she has been her there have been many noticeable and good changes to the Surfside The location by Keawakapu beach with the turtles and many fish for snorkelling and paddle board rentals is perfect. Or you van sit on the huge expansive lawn on comfy chairs in the shade of a palm tree. The BBQ area at night is always fun and friendly. Really we just can't say enough about how much we love it here. It is a home away from home.
We stayed in condo 113 at Kihei Surfside for 9 nights in late March 2017. We loved the condo complex and location next to Keawakapu beach. The ground floor unit was very handy for coming and going especially to and from the BBQ's at night. The beds were comfortable and the shower was great. Also the TV, microwave, fridge etc all worked fine. Now the cons. The whole condo needs some TLC. Way overdue for a renovation. The kitchen cabinets are gross. The sofa bed is old and lumpy. No A/C in the unit but the fans in the bedroom and the living room seemed to keep the place cool enough. There were only 2 BBQ's for the whole complex located in behind the small pool but it seemed to be enough as we all shared space and talked about our day. The pool was very warm by the late pm and was near bath tub temperature. Great for kids but maybe too warm if you are looking to cool down from the blistering heat! We rented Tommy Bahama chairs at the main office for $5 for the week each. Great deal. Overall we would definitely stay here again and would even request this unit again if a renovation had been done.
Unbeatable location, well managed, reasonably priced..we keep coming back! Great for all ages but suits an adult crowd mostly. Older building but well maintained. Gorgeous lawn and views, next to the Kihei boat launch and Mana Kai hotel and restaurant next door. Small, nice pool, beautiful Keawakapu beach next door with stellar swimming and snorkeling.
