Kihei Surfside Condo
- What's Included
Our first time in Maui, and the first time to Hawaii with our 4 year old son. The location and unit were both PERFECT for us.The resort is situated so that it is very private and quiet, yet mere steps to a beautiful sandy beach. The rocky shoreline just off the property itself made for really fun tide pool exploration and so many sea turtles nibbling off the rocks in plain sight! We didn't snorkel here but saw many who did and they seemed to be seeing lots of sea life. There was a small pool, shuffle board, and small putting green area. Tip - There is morning yoga on the lawn, I think run by the yoga studio in the resort next door and complimentary coffee, also in the mornings. There is no AC but with the windows all open, those famous trade wind breezes kept us just right. I was a little worried at first but honestly, we preferred it this way, falling asleep to the sound of the waves. With AC we would've been tempted to keep the doors/windows closed the whole time, which would've been a shame. The unit was super clean, and even had tiny toiletries for us to use. There were towels, two hair dryers, a well stocked kitchen (missing a good sized colander), full sized appliances, coffeemaker, toaster, etc. Not promised in the listing but we were happy to find: beach towels, umbrellas, boogie boards, and snorkel gear. Lanai had a glass railing which we were glad about as it is safer than the open rails for kids. There was Cable TV with plenty of kid friendly programming and strong Wifi. The reception office was helpful and even had popsicles for the kids. :) We ordered a toddler bed from one of the local baby supply rental companies who delivered right to us. We put it in the living room area which ate up a lot of floor space, but it worked out fine since we rarely hung out in the unit. Tip about the sofabed: Hubby tried it the first night (due to mix up with rented toddler bed delivery) and he said he wouldn't have been able to sleep there for more than 1 or 2 nights. Might be ok for kids or teens. There seemed to be a good mix of newbies like us, and regulars. Everyone was friendly and lovely. All the kids were so well behaved. Quiet hours were well heeded by all. There is a small convenience store located next door but we did not have a good experience related to cleanliness and just basic level of service. However, full markets are just a short drive away. We got to walk through some of the other more developed areas on Maui with larger resorts, and while lively and with many amenities, returning to Kihei Surfside was like an exhale of relief. We just loved it and cannot wait to return!
I’ve been to Kihei Surfside many times. Super location, beautiful grounds, friendly staff, close to the beach. Really good value for the money. Only issue this time is BIRDS. Roosters crowing in the morning (starting before 5:30 am) and bird poop everywhere. Bird poop on the handrails, pool furniture, BBQ area and picnic tables. Never saw anybody clean bird droppings in the two weeks I was there. GROSS!!!
Kihei Surfside is an absolute score! Great location right on the water on a great stretch of property. Perks of a hotel with the homeliness of privately owned units. We booked through Rosies Rentals and everything was easy!! Walking distance to 5 palms, great happy hour! Unbelievable view from balcony unit 404. Front desk Joshua was great! We will definitely seek this out again when we return to beautiful Maui!!
Been coming to maui since 1988 & this was my 9th visit. Stayed at surfside 8 of those times & it never disappoints. It's not the fanciest place but it really has it all. Great lawn to relax on our front & a great place 2 watch turtles. Awesome beach just next door. Grounds are meticulously maintained. We stayed in 609 & it had all basics you'd need. Only real improvement needed would be a new need but otherwise great. Enjoyed the book library & free movies at office. This place rocks!
My wife and two kids (ages 9 and 5) just returned from a great eight night stay at the Kihei Surfside (Unit 513). I have stayed at the Surfside twice before (in 1996 and 2012) and have never been disappointed. As our first trip here with kids, it proved even better than we could have hoped. Located on the oceanfront on south end of S. Kihei Road, just before the posh Wailea area, it's really in the perfect spot. If you go north, you're just a couple minutes from plenty of dining and shopping options. If you go south, you hit the really fancy (and pricey!) resorts, which have some nice walking areas, more expensive shops, and a number of them host luaus (we went to the Grand Luau at Honua'ula at the Grand Wailea). The Surfside is a condominium complex, so the units are individually owned. As such they are not all uniform, and decor and upgrades vary. In the three times we've been, we've stayed in three different units and all have been comfortable and well furnished and equipped. If you go off-season, it's not hard to find a rate well under $200 a night. The grounds are impeccably maintained, with a huge lawn populated with palm trees and featuring a putting green overlooking the ocean; a nice, refreshing pool; BBQ grills for use; lawn games, books, and DVDs to borrow; and plenty of parking. As mentioned, the location could not be better, especially if you have young kids. The Surfside doesn't have it's own beach, per se. It's all cragy lava rock right off the lawn, which makes for great tides pools, but not great swimming. However, a two minute walk and you're on neighboring Keawakapu beach, which is a terrific beach. Soft tan sand makes for great swimming and castle building. On the north end of the beach and continuing all along the front of the Surfside property, the old lava flows turn into a coral reef and snorkeling is good, especially in the mornings when the water is calmest. We saw tons of fish and several turtles. All day long the waves are small enough for young kids to play in safely, while still sizable enough for some boogie boarding and body surfing for older kids and adults. The north end of the beach, closest to the Surfside and another condo complex can get a little crowded, but a short walk down further south and you'll be able to easily pick out a nice sandy spot. And even when the near end is "crowded" it's nothing compared to the more touristy areas. Especially with younger kids, Keawakapu is really the perfect beach.Speaking of crowds, that's another great thing about the Surfside. It never seems crowded AT ALL. I've been in August, October, and May, so probably not peak times really, but I've never felt there were too many people around. All the other guests, mostly older retired folks it seemed on this trip, were super nice.Since it's a condo complex and not a hotel, there isn't a lot by way of staff. There was really just the guy working in the office, who was very helpful. All the other grounds or cleaning staff we did happen to bump into were very friendly. The Surfside feels like a hidden gem and hopefully it stays that way. Until there is some compelling reason to do otherwise, which I don't foresee any time soon, there is no other place I plan on staying while in Maui. Unless you seek a very rugged, spartan or a fancy pants resort experience, the Surfside would make an excellent choice for your stay.
