Napili Kai Beach Resort
- What's Included
Ok, big claim I know...this is obviously a personal opinion so depending on your idea of a "perfect resort" you might not agree. Full Disclosure: I've stayed at NKBR at least 10 times over the past decade, so you might think I'm biased, I'd instead say that I have seen a dedication to service and Hawaii that is long-term and marks their consistency. Here's a couple reasons why I think NKBR is the best:1. Location - Napili Bay is one of the best bays on the island, and NKBR is right at the best end. It offers excellent snorkeling when the surf is down, as well as a great beach for kids, paddle boarding, swimming, etc. I've had numerous friends who stayed at larger beaches like Ka'anapali and came up to Napili for the day and wished they had stayed there instead. Napili is also has more wind that locations further south which is nice on hot days2. The Grounds - it's built in the corner of the bay and runs up a hill and to the point of the next bay over (Kapalua). There are plenty of pools, group spaces, and sand. There are also quieter areas for couples, walks, ponds, etc. You do not get the feeling that you do at some of the mega-resorts on Maui where you might as well be at an amusement park because it's so packed3. Food - The Sea House @ NKBR is great for happy hour, apps, and dinner, and you can also walk along the sand to get breakfast at The Gazebo Restaurant4. Staff - they make you feel like you're at home, always very accommodating and welcoming. Every morning at 10AM they serve pineapple, coffee, and juice on the beach accompanied by a quick lesson about Hawaiian culture & history5. Dedication to Hawaii - the resort is no more than 2 stories tall for any of the buildings, which keeps that old-Hawaii feel. They offer free tours of the gardens and talk about all the native plants, and also the daily cultural lesson I mentioned above. NKBR has the "Napili Kai Foundation" which does a hula show to raise money for college scholarships for local kids
Stayed here the last week of June and first week of July and had a great experience. It was a family vacation with 21 people!! That seems like a daunting task but NKBR made it look easy. We stayed in two different rooms during our stay and both were spacious, well appointed, and had great views. The beach here is fantastic and the snorkeling here was better than the snorkeling on our snorkeling excursion we took out of Lahaina. All of the staff we encountered were helpful and friendly. We liked that we could charge to our room account at the restaurant and snack bar and didn't have to carry cash, purse, or a wallet around. There are several restaurants and shops within a few miles of the resort so you don't feel like you are stuck out in the middle of nowhere like some places on the west side feel. The kitchens in the room are fully equipped with utensils, dishes, etc so stocking up and preparing meals in your room is a great way to save time and money. We also used the provided BBQs to have family cookouts while there. Can't say enough about this place and if we go back to Maui we will definitely return here.
The location is absolutely perfect. The views of the lagoon are wonderful and you do get that beautiful feeling that you are in true Hawaii here. Having said that, we checked in late (around 11pm), our host was almost bothered by our arrival (later on we found on she was not part of the regular staff), so we went ahead and check in our room. What we booked turned out to be 2 rooms adjacent, but the first night, we weren't allowed in the second room (never understood why), and also the door to another interconnecting room ( a 3rd one), wasn't locked - so right at midnight we walked into someone else's bedroom! When we called the front desk to ask about this, their response was very rude ' why did you go in?' Don't go anywhere!!! Like we were supposed to know not to open that inside door from our room. So, needless to say, the check in wasn't pleasant at all and our rate included that one other room that weren't allowed in. Oh well. We were too tired to deal with that. The following day, we talked to the front desk and they apologized for the incident but that was all there was to it. Just a quick I'm sorry. For the amount of $$ spent here one would have expected a little more from them. Parking: there were some events going on there, because after our first night that we had parking outside our room, we were told to park way - way far. So yeah, a little inconvenient when you are bringing groceries and bags and beach stuff. Yes, they do have a big parking lot, but some close spaces should be reserved for guests and not for those events they were hosting, leaving guests like us with no parking at all on one night (oh yeah, we were told again - you can park outside in the street!). Sure. The breakfast food was good, but the same menu every day gets a little old. Same with lunch. Basically you are paying mostly for location, because it is wonderful - too bad the food is not.The room itself is nice, again, not great. A little outdated. Our neighbors smoke next to us and we had to report that too. I wish they were more on top of this. Would I go back there? Hmm. The location is that great that maybe. Maybe.
Felt most welcome at this beautiful, family friendly resort. Called ahead to check in early if available and after a wonderful 4 day stay we were offered hospitality room before leaving to catch our plane. Studio well stocked with all the accomodations of home and then some. Could not have been a more beautiful setting.
We were in room 234 - a wonderful ocean front unit with a perfect view of the bay. The snorkelers came right by our room. Views of two islands. Gorgeous sunset. Before we arrived, I wasn't quite sure if it was a hotel or a condo. Apparently some units are individually owned. This one wasn't - pure hotel. Maid service. Laundry facilities for pay located throughout the property. Great restaurant, nice selection of food. Really unique and delicious Caesar and wedge salads. They have multiple swimming pools located throughout the property. Have beach chairs to use on lawn or sand. Have tennis privileges with a facility right across the street. Beautifully landscaped and kept up.
