Outrigger Palms at Wailea
- What's Included
We had a fantastic stay here. I was hesitant after reading some reviews, however our unit (1904) was clean & well stocked. The beach chairs, boogie boards, cooler and beach umbrella all came in handy, as we went to the beach almost everyday. The spacious lanai was wonderful for bbq ing dinner. You will need to clean the kitchen well after meals or you will have ants everywhere. The kitchen could stand to use some updated appliances, but they work. The pool & hot tub area was very nice. From there the beautiful sunsets can't be beat. We booked through Maui Car & Condo, Julie & Jeff were very accommodating & helpful. They made the whole process seamless. We love Maui!! Thank you!
We were in room 2204 for a week. It is advertised as an ocean view room. That's a bit of a stretch. If a tsunami was happening, yes, you could then see the ocean. The room itself was very spacious which was appreciated. Ours was a large 1 bedroom with two bathrooms. I loved the two lanais and listening to the palm fronds rustling in the wind. The kitchen was OK but it was missing some of the small things like a salt and pepper shaker. Also, the bbq was temperamental. The place itself is probably 30 years old. It could definitely use an updating. One of the really weird features of it are the extremely low light switches. Seriously, maybe 2 feet off the ground. It must have been designed for a travelling circus of small people or a bunch of orphaned children. Very weird. The location is very good. The beach is only a 5 minute walk away. I ran every day about 10 km into Wallea/Kihei and back - along a flat sidewalk/road.In terms of amenities, it had a decent pool but I missed the lack of a gym facility. The parking and wifi were free which was great.Would I come back? Maybe. It wasn't a bad experience, in fact it was good. It's just that I think I would like to try out another place.
After writing many reviews, this is the hardest! First, a friend highly recommended The Palms at Wailea and yes, it is a beautiful property that is overall gorgeous and a great location! Wonderful flowers, nicely upkept grass and nice pool. Even though it's small, we did thoroughly enjoy relaxing around it and could always get chairs. However, before we left home, reading reviews, I phoned and emailed and asked for a renovated room as some of the reviews said. When we arrived, we definitely were not given a renovated room. First, the 2 bedroom unit was huge and wonderful! Big sunken living room, huge master bedroom and bathroom, nice kitchen very well stocked, beautiful big lanai with furniture for 6 and private big bbq. Really, very wonderful, but after a long day travelling, then waiting 2 hours for a car rental (DO NOT book a car through BUDGET), getting all loaded up on groceries from Costco and getting all unpacked at the Palms (which involved a walk from the allocated parking spot, down 4 stairs and then up about 12 stairs), we go to go to sleep finally and the sofa bed is broken. First, a very poor mattress, but then the actual frame is broken so we put the mattress on the floor for the rest of the week. Our daughters (in their 20's) slept on it and we made due. Yes, we should have complained right then, but this wouldn't have been an easy fix and after finally getting everything unpacked and set up, and only being there for a week, the last thing we wanted to do was pack everything up again and move. When we checked in, we were told they were full so assumed we wouldn't be able to be moved also. Also, whenever we used the dishwasher, the small sink in the kitchen would overflow into the big sink and then drain. (After checking out and speaking to the manager, we were given a small compensation, which we are thankful for, however considering the property and location (Wailea), the room should have absolutely been in better condition). The carpet needs to be badly replaced (which we were told is happening now). The toaster was broken too however, we were promptly given a new one. So yes, hard to rate this one. If I knew we were in a renovated unit for sure, I would stay there again, however, with booking over 8 months ago, a phone call and email and to get this unit, I would recommend to be careful about booking here. All that being said, we truly had a wonderful familiy vacation in Maui-nice walks, great beaches, Twin Falls hike, Haleakala crater, kayak and snorkel with turtles tour!
This was our third visit to the Palms. We have stayed in several places on Maui, but the Palms is our favourite mainly because of location, the large lanais and the private BBQ. The grounds, pool and staff are excellent. Having given the accolades, I have to comment specifically on unit 1801. It is time to retire this old dog and redo it. The place is in desperate need of new flooring, paint, and a really good, deep cleaning. The size and layout of the units is ideal for a family. We really appreciate a full kitchen, two bathrooms, the big patio doors etc. Unit 1801 was not cleaned well which we recognized upon arrival. Without getting into too many specifics, the toilets were dirty. Vanity is dingy and dirty. A picture had fallen off the wall in the first bathroom and the cleaning staff propped it on the vanity looking very sloppy and careless. We found garbage from a previous visitor beside the bed - and a baby pacifier. Walls are dirty and banged up. Along the tracks of the bathroom pocket door and closet doors, there is dirt and sand --- easily solved with a good vacuuming. Dust balls along the edge of carpets. I spent a good deal of time wiping and vacuuming to make it satisfactory. About two days into our stay, the dishwasher stopped working. I might add that the dishwasher didn't work last time we were in the unit and I told the front desk staff. The staff had it replaced with a new one, but this meant we had to stay in the unit until the installer was done. We weren't comfortable leaving someone in the suite with our belongings. We know the Palms can do better. Two sets of friends stayed there at the same time upon our recommendation. Their suites were lovely, redone, clean. Sadly, we all payed the same price for our vacations. They definitely got a sweeter deal. We shared some of our concerns with the manager. He was very kind, professional and seemed genuinely concerned. We appreciated that he took our comments seriously as we were not trying to be difficult. We are hoping to get a better unit when we return to the Palms. However, we will be asking NOT to have 1801.
#608 VRBO Arrived to an immaculate, beautiful condo with chocolates and fresh flowers. Received a call from the owners, Bruce who lives there with his wife, upon checking in assuring us if there was anything else we needed that it's just a call away. He also provided info on where to dine. Truly everything you would need, comfy living and sleeping, well stocked with linen, beach chairs, beach umbrella, etc. Exceptionally large lanai which we used everyday. Everyday, we (2 couples) walked from the condo to the Shops at Wailea and beach walk, Kihei and Kamaole beaches. All of this with an exceptional price! To comment on a big negative of the Outrigger portion.... our first day we walked to view the pool, not prepared to swim but after arriving from Alaska one of us decided take a swim. There's a posted sign saying to dry off before leaving. When we asked for one towel was told towels are only for Outrigger guest only, not VRBO guest. I explained we weren't prepared and didn't know and pointed out their sign saying to dry off. Their policy is understandable but could have given a towel out of courtesy so not to walk through the area dripping water. Luckily a by-stander overheard and brought us a towel. Also on one occasion we were in the hot tub when a teen arrived, we asked where he was from and he replied "here". A pool worker motioned him out and they whispered. He got back in the hot tub and shortly after 10 more teenagers arrived getting in the hot tub with us. Hanging and kissing on each other. We, paying guest, felt pushed out...and reported it to a desk clerk. Another night two young males came in the back gate with back packs, undressed and got in the hot tube. We asked where they just packed in from, they said camping. Although it seems to be "policed" for alcohol, there's no way they can police whether you're an Outrigger guest or VRBO guest since towels are expected to be brought in if your VRBO like we were. This fact seems to be common knowledge of the locals so the pool and hot tub is used by non paying local teens and the pool area employees are in on it. Overflow parking availability is plentiful.
