Royal Kahana Maui by Outrigger
- What's Included
A fairly basic condo style resort with full kitchens. Located beachfront and close to shops and restaurants.
Stayed for 4 nights, the AC in the room never got cooler than 79. Maint, 3 people check & nothing got done, they cleaned out the clogged filter, didn't improve. Ceiling fan made it bearable. Location, you'll need a rental car, Kahana more remote and youll need to drive everywhere. The Kitchenette and W&D in room is nice to have, no need to over-pack.. No restaurant/bar on site, McD walking distance and shoppette too. The Concierges are very helpful, comprehensive briefing on first morning. They hold drawings there for free tickets or two for one tickets, we won a free ticket on the Lanai snorkeling trip. Want a chopper ride or Luau? they can book it. I recommend calling a week ahead & booking, those trips sell out fast. Would have been a higher rating if they could have fixed the AC or offered to move us but they didn't seem too concerned about it. If I go back to Maui I will stay in Lahaina or somewhere near more activities. If you want to sit on the small beach and stay in one spot, this is the place for you. Have Fun!
In June we had the opportunity to stay at the Royal Kahana. We had read many reviews about the property and were a little hesitant We heard there was no beach. When we arrived to our amazement there was a beach for us to access. The weather was wonderful and we were able to take morning walk to see the turtles. We were greeted by a very sweet front desk lady named Alofa. Her bubbly personality made the welcome into the hotel so perfect. This was our first family vacation and she made us feel like family. We booked a few excursions with our concierge Rebecca. She was very delightful giving us great discounts and putting us on the activities that fit our family the best. The pool has a little coffee shop, where you can purchase breakfast and lunch and yummy shave ice. Our room was very clean, enough room for all of us and a beautiful ocean view. The only negative things we experienced was one of the concierges. Her name is Kerry. She was quite rude. When we didn't want to book anything she was very short and acted like we were bothering her. Also she was quite pushy. We were not happy about this at all. We had a couple of children with us and she seemed to be annoyed by them. Also the distance from Lahaina. We were told that we were right down town. This was by our travel agent. So nothing the property did wrong. This is when Alofa offered us an upgrade at no charge. But overall this was a vacation that will be in our memories forever.
I have spent over 30 nights here in past 90 days and would return. Excellent sunsets but nearly non-existent beach...am glad they are doing restoration work. Fewer amenities compared to other resorts I have visited, though washer & dryer in room a great perk! As budget friendly as one might get on Maui. A few restaurants in walking distance; none on property.
This resort is a mix of privately owned condo and rooms owned by the resort. I am not going to review the specifics of the condo here but will review that on the vrbo website. The resort itself is pretty good, accounting for Hawaii's high prices on everything. It is older but generally clean and well maintained and certainly much cheaper that the Ka'apalani hotels down the road. It is not a full service resort and is best suited to the independent traveler who prefers to make their own itinerary. The pool is on the smaller side for the size of the resort but is clean and easy to access. The Shaka shaved ice was not operating at the times we were there, so be prepared to go offsite for all food needs. Every room has an ocean view, at least in part, very few are true ocean front. The staff were polite but not excessively friendly or proactive in helping guests, which worked for us, but may not appeal to those seeking more of a hotel resort experience. The common areas are on the smallish size too, with very limited on site activities, there is a shuffle board and ping pong table but that's it. Again not a problem to us as we were more interested in Day trips to snorkel spots but you should plan on getting out and about, not relying on in resort entertainment. Previous reviews mention construction, this seems to have been completed for now, the most noise was from the adjacent resort where there were leaf blowers being used. The beach however has not recovered from the storms and is still very limited, dropping off quickly. There are excellent beaches within 5 minutes drive but public parking fills up fast so be sure to get an early start to your beach of choice ( be there before 9.00am) . There is plenty of onsite parking and it is included with your room. Overall a good mid price base for a Maui vacation without all the expensive trimmings of an upscale resort.
This was our first visit to Maui. I was very pleased that we selected The Royal Kahana. A clean, comfortable, one-bedroom suite. A small but functionable kitchen, nice big living area...it had everything we needed. We were plesantly surprised on how clean the pool and BBQ areas were. The grills were cleaned every morning, they looked brand new each day. The beach area is small but then again, we loved it due to the fact that we didn't have to fight a big crowd for a nice spot on the beach. There are a couple of restaurants within walking distance to the property if you don't want to eat in every night. The concierge was very helpful and gave us a few ideas on what to do while we were in Maui. The best part of our stay was the view. We were on the 12th floor and had simply awesome views.Whenever we go back to Maui, we already know where we'll stay. Thank you Royal Kahana!
