Royal Kahana Maui by Outrigger
- What's Included
A fairly basic condo style resort with full kitchens. Located beachfront and close to shops and restaurants.
This is a great place to stay as long as you do your homework and know what to expect. First off these are private owned condos, not a resort hotel. Each condo is different and depending on how much the owner has put into it they can range from very dated to extremely elegant. Also because of the location, the beach is subject to weather patterns throughout the year. Right now they do have some beach with access from the cabana. The beach is very steep though and rocky when you get past the sand. The plus side is that the turtles love it, we saw no less than 3 turtles every day. This was our second visit to the Royal Kahana. The first time was 10 years ago and because of that experience we decided to try it again. We had booked a 2 bedroom garden view because of our budget, but when we arrived the lovely Afu, who was working the front desk, upgraded us to an ocean front. Most incredible views ever! We got #810 and it was wonderful. It was a little outdated but not bad. 2 bedrooms each with private bathrooms, a huge living room, full kitchen, dining area, third bathroom in the main area and of course a huge wrap around lanai. There were little things like some rust around the tub and windows but overall it was very clean. The pool is a pool, nothing special there. They do have some really nice gas grills by the pool that you can cook up a steak on. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We wanted a home base to explore from not a resort/spa experience so this was the perfect place for us.
Just got back from a six day stay at the Royal Kahana. Overall, I was pleased with our condo. However, the pool and fitness centre open TOO LATE in the day! The pool doesn't open until 9 AM and the fitness centre opens at 7 AM. If you have ever been to Hawaii before or have booked any excursions in Maui, you know that things start early. Every day we were up no later that 6:30 AM and were out the door by no later than 7 AM. Thus, working out first thing in the morning before you leave (which is when many people like to work out) is not possible as the fitness centre doesn't open until 7 AM! There is no reason why the fitness centre can't be open 24 hrs. As for the pool, 9 AM is just too late in the day. I don't understand why the pool is open until 10 PM when most people are in bed before that. It would make a lot more sense for the pool to open sooner in the day and just close earlier. The Royal Kahana needs to adjust their services to fit the schedules of its guests.
Nice view. Accommodations were comfortable and clean. Pool and grill area were enjoyable, Main disappointment was no direct beach access due to erosion mainly because we were not aware of it when booking trip and found out on arrival. When we questioned , we were told it has been like this over a year and known (I viewed the web site before we booked and that night and saw no indication of this.). At minimum seemed ownership could have made more effort to provide closer access with resort next door right at edge of property or offered something due to inconvenience. Saw quite a few guests that seemed surprised at this when checking in. Most of staff friendly but not all.
We stayed in a two bedroom suit with our three children and really enjoyed our stay! No, this isn't a high end resort but if your somewhat self sufficient this is a comfortable stay. Having the washer/dryer and full kitchen was awesome. Pool area was smaller but clean and the complimentary bbq's were great for grilling.
This block of condos is very well maintained, there is some damage from recent storms but you can see where they are working hard to repair this. It is an older block but it is very clean, on an early morning walk you can see staff cleaning the pool and bbq's and the guys mentioned when they cooked a bbq that they looked brand new and unused but the nights they did cook there were always other people down there using them. The car park was resurfaced while we were there, parking spaces are tight so if you are hiring a car don't get anything too big, but we found this problem in most places around the island. We had a number 10 unit so facing straight out onto the ocean with a great view of whales and turtles. Great location for good restaurants and grocery stores.
