Royal Kahana Maui by Outrigger
- What's Included
A fairly basic condo style resort with full kitchens. Located beachfront and close to shops and restaurants.
The condo we were in was great. Ocean view, remodeled, and very nicely appointed. Overall we had a great time and it's a great value for ocean front... being able to see the ocean and hear the waves from the condo was awesome. That said, you can't access the beach. You have to walk 5 minutes to get beach access. Not a big deal for us and Kahana beach isn't great anyways for snorkeling and whatnot. We just ended up going to Black Rock in Kaanapali on the couple days we went to the beach. We rented it through VRBO so you know exactly what room you're getting. Some of the condos are not remodeled, so if you book through Expedia or something it's a little hit or miss. Talked to a few other people and most folks were happy with their room. It is nice having a full kitchen and laundry. The complex itself is just ok. The pool is nice and well maintained and there's a fitness center that's ok, but there's not much else. Of course, we were in Maui, so it's not like we were going to hang out at the hotel much anyways. Plenty of cool stuff to do elsewhere. However, if you're the type that just likes to hang out at the resort, there are better places on Maui for that.Anyways, the room was awesome and the pool was good, and that's all we really needed from the resort. A couple nights we made the 5 minute walk to the beach for sunset, and that was fine. Overall a good experience.
We stayed here for two weeks, Nov 2016. While I was disappointed with a majority of the amenities the resort had to offer (tennis courts weren't usable, shuffleboard court wasn't usable, outdoor ping pong was located in a windy area, no access to beach, no jacuzzi), and the rooms were less than impressive (large depression on my side of the bed, the unit was generally neglected and decor/amenities felt 30 years old), we enjoyed our stay in Maui because we primarily used the room to sleep and cook a few meals and WiFi was decent. The BBQ's were in good shape. The fitness center was ok but very small. Unfortunately, nothing really stood out about this resort except that it needs a face lift and the staff could have been better - it seemed like they were all trying to avoid eye contact. However the concierge service team was pleasant, professional and helpful. You can't call that a continental breakfast - more like a snack with coffee. We would not stay here again. Not to mention the wind was intense every night we stayed here and for the most part we didn't enjoy the pool as much as other areas around the island because of the weather in Kahana - not the mgmt team's fault, but it was one more thing that took away from our vacation experience at this resort.
***As of November 2016, there is NO beach access due to erosion from El Niño storms throughout 2016. I price compared this property with it's neighbors out of curiosity, and this hotel is around $100/night cheaper than the Sands of Kahana down the road which still does have beach access. You get what you pay for. If beach access is important to you, and you get annoyed by construction, call first to see if the beachfront has been restored yet (all due to mother nature's schedule)***I'm a Maui local and we came here for a weekend stay-cation. The local kama'aina rate is the cheapest right now on island. We got a garden studio, which has a peekaboo ocean view. The rooms are comfortable and quiet. The appliances are a bit dated but the shower was hot and the a/c was cold, and everything worked ok.The pool is heated, which was a plus since the weekend weather was windy and a bit rainy. The pool area is basic, I wish the snack bar was still open. However, there is a pizza place, sushi place, Whaler's General Store & McDonalds within walking distance. We appreciated having a fitness center and free parking. A lot of hotels charge for parking and resort fees (use of their pool and beach). The one weird thing is that the rain gutters spill off the roof directly onto the parking lot and pool area. On a windy day (which is about 75% of the time here) you may get rained on by gutter water. Big flaw in construction design in my opinion, didn't see this on neighboring properties. All in all, it was a good value for the price. If you're honeymooning or on vacation and amenities are super important to you, I'd spend a few hundred bucks more and go somewhere else. But if you're on a budget, this is the best on Maui right now.
There is a lot of work going on right now to stop the beach erosion in Kahana that will and has impacted the visitor beaches starting at Royal Kahana and the follow three resort condos west. Basically the beach is gone and a man made sea wall now exist. This has drastically reduced the vacation value of these four properties. If you are considering vacationing here in west Maui then you need to do you research to make sure the condos you are considering have the beach you are looking for. There are plenty of local parks with beaches, but you will have to deal with people.
The resort rooms look like extended stay in a good location, you have washer and dryer. Parking is a little hard to find if you are here after 9:30pm. There is no access to the beach as it was advertised when we booked, we heard it was washed off but an update to the website description would be good. Based on my experience with three star hotels this is not one, I would have given 2 if it was not for the staff.I would skip the activities center and book myself but again it could be helpful for a few others.
