Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas
- What's Included
We stayed for 7 nights over thanksgiving at the Westin and it was a fabulous trip. The staff at the Westin were incredibly accommodating going out of their way for us from upgrading our rooms to ocean front to giving us a 400 late check out. Could not have been happier.
Our studio suite had everything we needed and more. Kitchen was well stocked with anything we needed for cooking. Full size fridge. Microwave as well as oven and dishwasher and laundry washer/dryer. Nice soaking spa tub and large shower area. Pool towels for pool (with waterslide) and beach. Very helpful staff. The place is gorgeously situated with immediate access to the beach from the hotel. Finding parking can be a little challenging but we eventually found a space every time. Had a wonderful time here.
If you're into owning a timeshare property (which they push pretty hard), this might be the place for you. Spacious apartments with kitchenettes and a balcony...nicely appointed. On site restaurants, gym, spa, pools and beach. Nice place for a family and for yearly visits. However, if you're looking for a more upscale or Hawaiian 'resort' type feel, I would look elsewhere. I prefer walking into an open air lobby greeted with a refreshing drink and lei's upon arrival and feeling an ocean breeze on my face when checking in. Walking down the hallways to our room, it was like an old musty apartment building with no decorations on the walls & views of ugly rooftops & parking structures. That seems like an easy fix. We stayed in a 1 bedroom villa in building 7. The bedroom had a fogged glass window between the bdr and bathroom which makes no sense. If the kids went to the bathroom in the middle of the night and turned on any light, the bdr was completely lit up, waking everyone. Who's bright idea was that? We did have an ocean view but the room also faced the new construction from the Westin they are building next door. We were told there would not be a noise issue...but that was not the case. When I spoke to the manager about the situation, we were told that the noise was coming from the new hospital they were building across the street and they were not aware of this until that morning. I was told they had no other rooms to move us into (which I don't believe) and was offered a $50 consolation for our inconvenience. I did not find that to be an acceptable solution.I also have to comment on the parking at the resort. Whoever designed this area must ride a motorcycle or a mini cooper because that's about what fits in those spots. Anything larger than a tiny compact car, good luck! However, the shuttle service to Lahaina was a nice bonus.Regarding the staff, we found some to be really friendly (Magie at the front desk; Shannon at concierge; Nora at concierge)...and others who seemed to just be getting by doing their job. Overall, I'd say it was a decent resort in need of some tlc. If you're using Starwood points, the Sheraton has more of an old time Hawaiian feel and the other Westin seems more crowded but more resort like.
We have been owners at this Westin for probably 15 years and yet we've only been to the resort twice. We won't talk about how much the yearly maintenance fees have escalated from what we were first told. The property has been thoughtfully laid out and developed, the rooms are nice, there are plenty of outdoor barbecues and tables. Probably the nicest feature is having a calm, wide beach behind it to stroll on whenever you like. You can have a nice walk to the Whalers Village from this property.Five things were disappointing to us (none of them fatal, but could greatly improve the experience):1. The parking spaces were so small, compact size only, and not plentiful enough; not sure this can be fixed. 2. The kitchens were fairly well stocked as far as places like that go, but the glass cutting board was awful. Why not supply disposable boards, thin plastic ones that don't make awful noises when you cut on them and dull the knives?3. The food at the pool/sports bar was terrible. The fish tacos were awful, the chicken wings were of no particular style even though they were called "sriracha". We gave the place 3 tries and gave up.4. The massages were so expensive we did not go to the spa. We could go home and have 2 massages for the price of 1 there and did.5. Because we did not spend 7 nights we got no room service, towels or anything (we came in on Sunday and left Saturday). We ended up washing our own towels. It would be nice if room service came at the mid point of your stay no matter how long it is.Two places nearby that we will review separately but that need to be mentioned: Tamura's and Merriman's both excellent!
Ka'anapali beach is one of my favorite beaches in Hawaii, and Westin facilities are consistently top notch. So this is the perfect combo. The resort offers lots to do for kids of all ages, and it's also a fine place to do nothing but lounge and float.I also want to give a shout out to the concierge desk - especially Mick, who directed us to a number of amazing food options around the island.
