Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas
- What's Included
I chose this property based on the reviews. I was forgiving on the price because it was Hawaii and it was the holidays. I did all my research and chose a one bedroom suite, ocean view with breakfast. I paid the deposit a year in advance to secure my five day reservation. When I arrived, no rooms were ready. I was then given options to choose another room which was smaller but had a partial ocean view, or a courtyard view or an interior view. None of the options sounded good. This is where I should have insisted. Instead, I decided to accept what the front desk was pushing on me and took the room with the courtyard view. It was Christmas and I knew they were booked, so I was grateful. The room was perfectly fine. It was everything I expected from the photos: spacious, well-appointed, great bathroom and tub. We just couldn't enjoy our lanai because we didn't have any privacy, and it was noisy from the kids playing below. There are lots of great dining options outside of the Westin. You should try to locate them before you get here. Breakfast a la carte was inedible...the worst I've ever had at any resort. Dinner was a vast improvement but still nothing to write home about. When we checked out, we pointed out that they had charged us for our daily breakfasts. Also, our bill showed that we were in a courtyard view room but was charged for the ocean view. We were given credits for the mistakes but then had salt rubbed into wound when the representative declared that she didn't know why we weren't given the room we originally reserved: her computer showed that it was available.Overall, I would choose better next time. It was a very mediocre experience. I can't see myself returning when I've got so many other options to get what I want.
Have been here for last 12 years and seen it from the start. Recently they put a new manager in charge and he comes from the service side of the business and it shows. They brought back robes to the units without having to call and the service and grounds has been rejuvenated. The best thing is they added a shuttle stop downtown Lahaina and you can now get to the feast of lele without driving or go to mass without driving. The villas are still great. There are truly now bad views here unless you come expecting to be the only one who wants the highest and closest to the beach unit. Everyone can't get the top view so chill out and enjoy the views from where you are. They Tuesday and Friday craft fair on the beach if a nice place to purchase souvenirs without the town hassle. Keep up the good work and thanks for the memories.
I have owned here since the first building opened in about 2005. Every year when we go back, I hold my breath expecting to see some kind of degradation as the resort ages. And every year, it is just as lovely.Last year (2015), there was new furniture, light fixtures and carpet. This year (2016), new appliances in the kitchens. They really stay on top of the place -- and the grounds are always immaculate. In 2016, they also added an extra stop on the shuttle (by the Banyan tree) and way more resort-hosted activities (and not just for kids), like the historical walking tour of Lahaina. The Kids' Club isn't cheap but the kids really have a fantastic time - not just babysitting and computers but enriching themed activities. There is nothing wrong with the North side of the complex (which has separate listings for renting on most website). It has gorgeous grounds, a Spa, a beach-side bar/restaurant and a slightly larger on-site store. But, if you have a choice, I'd recommend staying at the South side and just doing the two-minute walk to the North when you need those things. The South is older than the North but it's way more spacious both indoors and out, better designed and even more lovely.
This was my third visit to Maui, and my first at the Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas. Overall, I was impressed with this hotel. Our room was very large and well-appointed for the price. We loved having a washer-dryer in the suite - a total game-changer! The pools were nice, although no one is policing whether kids are in the adult pools and spas. Also, the locker rooms and showers adjacent to the guest lounge were outdated and not very nice for this caliber of hotel. I had to try four different lockers before I found one that actually worked. Please replace the broken lockers! The showers were small and dark.My biggest overall complaint about this place was the inconsistent service. I'll start with the good stuff. We had GREAT service from Russell at the concierge desk. He was very helpful and knowledgeable. Also, the spa employees were all wonderful and helpful. Everyone who helped us at the front desk was very polite and hospitable. However, they may want to have more people at the front desk, as there was always a line. They require you to go to the front desk for towels after the towel hut closes at 6pm, which is a pain when you have to wait behind 3-4 people checking in. They also require you to go to the front desk for a breakfast voucher if you forego cleaning. We didn't want to bother with the line. My biggest problem was with the Service Express. Unlike most hotels, the room phones do not have direct dial buttons to the front desk, the spa, room service, the concierge, housekeeping, etc. EVERYTHING goes through Service Express. The first problem is that about 75% of the time, the phone rang about 20+ times before anyone picked up. One time I called, it was actually busy. The second problem is that they were not always knowledgeable. I called and asked if anywhere on the resort sold clothes. The person who answered my call had no idea, but said she didn't think so. She said that the market in the North building might have clothes, and connected me. They don't have clothes, but the market in the South building does, and the spa actually had a LOT of clothes, including bathing suits, cover-ups, sundresses, and workout clothes. It's a good thing I investigated it myself before going off the premises to buy clothes.Last, but not least, a woman on Service Express was rude to me twice. I caught her name the second time. If someone from the hotel reads this and follows up with me, I'm happy to provide her name. The first time I spoke to this woman, I asked for directions to the spa. Her tone was very rude and condescending when she told me, "it's right in your building on the first floor." I can't convey in writing how rude she was, but it was certainly uncalled for. Then I got the same woman on the line when I called to ask what time check out is, and she, again, very rudely and condescendingly, said "um, it's right now." By the way, checkout time is 10am here, which is crazy early considering that check in is at 4pm, and we could not get early check in. I just can't believe that they have someone answering the phone for "Service Express" who is this rude and clearly cannot be bothered by questions! I was also surprised because I've always found those who work and live on the islands to be very welcoming and warm. This woman was the opposite. Overall, this is a nice hotel, and we loved having a full kitchen and washer/dryer. But I would hesitate to stay here again given the many options at so many world-class hotels. I would not subject myself to rudeness again.
I travel all over the world, and my single favorite place is the Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas. The villas are magnificently appointed, the grounds are spectacular, the beach is among the most beautiful, family-friendly and F U N in the world! The view of sunsets over Lanai and Molokai are breathtaking. The snorkeling right off the beach is as good as anything - coral reefs, all kinds of tropical fish, sea turtles. Calm waters for paddle-boarding. Whales (in season) within easy view. Beach-side sports bar for watching sports with all your new best-friends! Grilling dinner with a cold drink and all your new best friends. Walking to Dukes. Walking to Black Rock / the Sheraton for the nightly Hawaiian Cliff-Diving ceremony with hula dancer and live music. It's my rest/restore place.
