Good base hotel

This hotel is fine for exploring miami from. It's ideally located for the beach and ocean drive (South beach Main strip) are both about 5mins walk so far enough away it's quiet at night. Hotel is basic so ideal if you plan to be out and about and just want somewhere to shower/sleep. No amenities really to speak off but staff are really friendly and helpful. Air con was very noisy in the room was really our only negative.

Half hearted

The hotel rooms are divided into 2 parts, some are in the hotel entrance, some are on top of the restaurant. The rooms are very basic, but cosy. Our first room had 2 double beds. First thoughts weren't disappointed, but they were not amazed either. We were accompanied by a cockroach in the room. We went down to reception to inform them, and he instantly changed our room, and even gave us an upgrade. The second room was a lot nicer (of course), it had a queen size bed and connecting room for the kitchen. We were happy with the room, however the aircon in the second room was not as good as the 1st, and during the night we would sweat. We did not mention this to reception as we weren't staying there for much longer so we didn't see a point. Unfortunately, the first encounter with the cockroach was not the last, as we saw 2 more in the hallway. This made me very paranoid whilst in the hotel, which was another reason we did not eat at their restaurant. The continental breakfast they provide is an absolute joke. Toast, cereal and fruit. That. is .it. The breakfast is not even provided on site, it is down the road in the pizza shop. We ate there on our first day, and our last day because we had spent too much we thought we would save money. On a plus side, the breakfast has really nice orange juice. On a different note, all receptionists were a great help, and even recommended excursions, and gave us the pro's and con's of each, and even booked it for us. The hotel is on 5th street away from all the action, which i personally preferred as it was nice and quiet. It was 2 seconds away from TGI (which I highly recommend). There's not much really a bed and 'breakfast' hotel can offer apart from somewhere to sleep, but I do feel like they could offer more to make your experience more memorable.

Pre/post cruise stay

This hotel was booked as part of a package. Good point, it is close to the beach. It has a musty damp smell, in the lobby and in the rooms ( possibly due to flooding, but this wasn't mentioned so maybe not) rooms are tired and depressing. The air conditioning is really noisy. There is a note on the door telling you they'll bill you if you mark a bedspread and that it's not to be used. This is the only hotel I've come across that gives you a coffee maker but charges you for the coffee etc to go in it. We had breakfast include, this is at a restaurant a minute away called pizza days and us a very BASIC continental . There is no courtesy room to use, though they will give you an extra hour past checkout time. If you want any longer they will charge you half day rate of $85 which I thought was ridiculous. I would not pay $170 per night for this hotel. I've stayed in a lot nicer and cheaper in Miami.

Stop over only

I stayed at the ocean 5 at the beginning and end of my cruise, it is a very basic hotel and Seems to be costly for what you get.Unfortunately I would not stay there for longer then a night , booking anything from reception seems to have a cost attached to it , they seem to have a direct supply of taxis and you pay the hotel half and the taxi half so I imagine they are taking a cut.The rooms had all the basics, but when we asked for anything extra for example coffee for the coffee maker in our room we were told it was a dollar per cup, anything we requested seemed to have a cost attached to it. Th price does not seem to reflect the quality/standard of the rooms. On a positive note , the location is good and the reception staff are very helpful but if you are staying in Miami for longer then a night or two , I would look for a better standard hotel for cost.

Great stopover

Stayed here after visiting Vegas and onto our wedding cruise in Grand Cayman. Great room and friendly informative service from the reception guys. Very comfortable bed and kitchen also in our two room apartment. Great air con and quiet. Complimentary breakfast more than adequate but one or two rude guests jumping the line but hey were on holiday so just laugh at their rudeness. Overall more than pleased with our two nights on SoBe.
