I found this property to be in serious need of updating. The bathrooms were bad - the window trim was left hanging. It just seemed old and not maintained.
I will start with the good - the reception area was nice and the hotel staff was friendly. Check-in was good, but a bit slow. Now for the not so good. We stayed at the hotel on the night of January 14th, and it was only a one-night stay. They call this a resort, but I think that is an exaggeration of the term. We checked in around 6:30, and then went up to the room to eat. At 8:00, we decided to go down to the pool. To get to the pool, you have to walk through the basement level of the hotel, which is kind of like walking through a run down mall. There were shops on each side, and small eateries. This is not a bad thing, but it was not what we were expecting either. When we finally got to the pool, the pool was already closed for the day. It closes at 8:00, so beware of that if you're traveling with children. We weren't, so we weren't terribly upset about the pool. It was late and the water was chilly, so it was not likely we were going to swim anyway. But then we got to the beach entrance on the far end of the terrace, and it was also closed for the day. It had a chain around the gate with a padlock. This was very upsetting. The entire reason we picked this hotel was because it was ocean front. We didn't have a lot of time, and we wanted somewhere that would allow us at least an evening walk along the beach. We could have exited the hotel and used a public beach access to get around the locked gate, but that's not the point. We were charged a mandatory $15 "resort fee". But what did that fee actually buy us? No access to the pool or beach is all we got. The room was clean, but it was in below average condition. A cabinet door was cracked, there were cracked tiles on the floor, and over all it could have used a fresh coat of paint. I was also miffed that there was a charge to use the business center. I needed to print our boarding passes for our departing flight. For 4 minutes of internet use, they charged me $5. Printing was $1 per sheet. I only had 2 boarding passes to print, but as it printed, 2 additional blank pages ran through the printer, so it charged me $4 for that. In all, I paid $9 to print 2 boarding passes. Almost every other hotel would have done this for me for free. Oh, did I mention it is valet parking only? That's $20 extra too. My reservation was $143 plus tax. Add on the $15 resort fee, $9 printing fee, $20 valet fee, and tax, I was suddenly above $200 for what I would call a $100 per night hotel anywhere else. And considering I couldn't even access the beach, it was exactly like at another hotel somewhere else, and not at the beach.
Cleanliness leaves a lot to be desired. I found a live cocroach in the room. I called up the manager and he never came to see me or even called me back. The following day I called in the morning, day time and evening and he never called me back.In my 50 years of travel around the world it is the first time i was charged a $15/day for amenities such as towels in the room. The burners in the kitchen were all not functioning.Plates and cupe I used were rinsed not washed and put back in the cupboard.\ to be used again. The windows are so old they dont open. The hotels needs badly a major, major overhaul.
Our room (#1140) badly needed new windows. We were on the 11th floor and could hear the cars on the street below as if we were next to them. One of the nights was particularly chilly (50s); we could feel the chilly air coming through the windows, and the heat didn't work!!! (A/C worked fine, but that wasn't much help on this night...) FINE PRINT STUFF: TAKE NOTE of the $15 per day for "a variety of pool and fitness amenities" added to your bill. We booked a room with a "partial ocean view". Our room was on the side of the building, closest to the street. We could indeed see the ocean, if we leaned into the windows enough, but these were of such poor quality that we were afraid to fall through...We had a room with a kitchen. All the lovely pictures with those brand new appliances? Not all rooms have those...Our bathroom had no bath, only a shower. Our 4 year-old was not pleased. On our way back to the hotel after dinner one night, we noticed the sign on the hotel read "MARC_ _OLO". I'm sure this was once a great hotel, but it has not been maintained. It needs major renos. Pay a little more and go elsewhere. Sincerely disappointed, Hugues Quesnel
