5 Star price.. 2 Star experience

We traveled back to the W South Beach for a second time Easter weekend. We had reserved an ocean view suite and were excited about the visit. The trip immediately got off to a bad start when we were informed that our room was not ready and would not be ready until the afternoon of the following day. Therefore, we would have to have another room of lower value the first night and then move to another room. Given that they were charging close to $3,000 a night for the suite, it was incredible to me that they just simply marginalized us. It was a classic bait and switch. Lure you in with ocean suite and then overbook the hotel and tell you tough luck. The first night was loud with people arguing and kids screaming. Getting on the elevator was elbow to elbow. As the next day wore on, and we heard nothing about our new room, it became apparent that the hotel simply did not care, or they were understaffed and overwhelmed by the huge crowds. They finally moved us to the suite the next day at 5:00 p.m., more than 24 hours after we were supposed to have been there. They offered nothing for our troubles and did not respond to our inquiries on progress. They were however very eager to continue to charge for every incidental like an umbrella on the beach. The hotel was so crowded that you could not get space by the pool. The only thing the hotel did to make up for our reservation problem was to give us access to some pool space and chairs, which were hard to come by because the ratio of hotel rooms to pool space is not very favorable for getting a chair. Finally, we told them we were there to celebrate our anniversary, and the hotel did nothing to show its appreciation that we were celebrating there. You would expect that at a Hampton Inn, but when you are paying the prices the W charges, you would have expected better. I would caution anyone thinking about going to the W South Beach to realize that the hotel first and foremost cares about maximizing the number of bodies on the property and charging accordingly. They are perfectly willing to overbook and jerk people around on rooms as a result, and are not willing to invest in the customer service required to call yourself a five star hotel necessary to serve such a large number of guests. I might consider going back if they charged 2 star prices, but with 5 star prices, I will seek out a hotel that puts the customer first and provides a level of service one would expect at $3,000 a night. The W South Beach is simply not that hotel.

A huge disappointment

Although very expensive the rooms are frequently not "refreshed" in the evening, no soaps are replaced, a kid used the swimming pool as the bathroom and the hotel took half an hour to clean it. Last but not least somebody threw a glass from a balcony on people lying in the sun. They were lucky because somebody could have been really hurt. Be careful to the minibar. They charge unused things for hundred of dollars and they keep on charging after you have left.

Good hotel - great location.

Good rooms - great location - eating and drinking in hotel is completely and totally overpriced for the product and hotel type. Some staff a little to cocky and impatient when ordering and trying to understand costs and product. 50 dollars a night if you have hired a car for valet parking is extra and considering the car may cost 100 dollars per day this is an absurd cost. On the advice of a staff member we opted to let our car in a public car park at 2 dollars an hour however we still got a parking fine. Please note however the hotel did refund both the parking fine and the parking charge after challenging them on same which is to be recognised.Enjoyed our 4 night stay however we could not enjoy the facilities fully as a regular beer and a glass of wine in the bar was 35 dollars ex tip and breakfast was 120/140 dollars for 2 adults and 2 kids. For Those with no budget limitations you should have no issues.

Very disappointed!

I just came back from a 2-night stay at The W South Beach Hotel and did not enjoy the experience at all. Let me start by saying that I have traveled a lot, and stayed at so many 5 star hotels including Setai and The One in Miami beach. If those are 5 star I would give W 3.5 star at most!We arrived at the hotel at 9:30 am, and we knew that our room was most likely not going to be available until later on in the day. So, we checked in and we were told that they will calls us when the room is ready. We went back at 4 pm which was the check in time and they told us that the room is till not ready! So, I waited for another 15 minutes and once I started complaining they gave me my keys immediately. We got up to the room and housekeeping was still in there cleaning. Then we have to wait for about an hour to get our luggage upstairs. The washrooms at the pool area were disgusting at all times. Multiple clogged and over flowing toilets with feces in them. I had never seen such a thing at a 5-star hotel! They left us no towels in the room the 2nd day, I realized that when I was in the shower and had to call twice and stay in the shower for an extra 30 minutes. Forget about getting a bed at the pool area, you have to put you name down and they supposedly have a 30-minute policy and if the bed is empty you’ll have it. I watched multiple empty beds for a good 50 minutes and we did not get a bed once during our stay. The rooms are old and worn down. Very small gym with old equipment and half of the equipment was out of order. Not only was I overcharged on my credit card for items from the room bar, but I didn’t even use the items! I only used a phone charger which was already open and not brand new - so anything that was missing was probably from the previous guest and obviously was not replaced by the housekeeping staff. I emailed the hotel a few days ago and have not heard anything back yet. Overall, I am very unsatisfied with my stay at W and recommend Setai to anyone who is looking for a luxury accommodation and a better service.

Only a few drawbacks

I liked the W South Beach, don't get me wrong. Our room was clean and spacious and had a great view of the ocean. The staff is very accommodating as well. There are a few downsides- the whole hotel is dark... the lobby, the elevator, the hallways. Trying to be hip or save on electricity? The food is crazy overpriced but I suppose that is every hotel on South Beach. They nickel and dime you for everything- an umbrella by the beach is $25 for the day. Seriously? (At the pool they are free). The pool itself is large but the area around it is not, so you are right next to everyone else, stuffed in like sardines. Also, you can smoke by the pool, which I thought was gross and smelly. All in all a good hotel but I probably would go elsewhere next time.
