Grand Hyatt New York
- What's Included
Reception is good. The doormen are insolent and border line rude. Never have they opened a door or asked to help with luggage. The rooms are usually in good condition I stay here 1-2x/ month. Last room had poor water pressure and water was not hat enough. The electronics for lights/AC and windows don't work well.
If your preference is to stay in a large brand hotel that is central to transportation (grand central), Madison Ave, Time sq., 5th avenue this hotel is a good choice. If you are looking for a hotel "experience" try a boutique hotel. The room size is typical of NY hotels but the bathrooms are very small. Rooms have a desk which is adequate for business travelers, with outlets located in friendly places. Housekeeping was below average, but staff was friendly and helpful. As with most NY hotels higher floors tend to insulate from street noise.
During our recent stay in New York my friend and I were disappointed to find that standards had dropped in the quality of accommodation offered by the Grand Hyatt hotel. Our room was not as clean and the quality of furnishings not as good as in previous years.
I am a platinum member at the Hyatt or whatever the new level is, so I always stay at the Hyatt when on business in the US and sometimes other places around the world. Hyatt is my first choice where possible and I have arouund 250,000 points in Hyatt. On this occasion however I was appalled at how bad this Grand Hyatt in New York City was.On check-in I was presented with a peice paper card that allowed me to collect a max of 2 bottles of water from the shop in the lobby which is included in the price of the hotel room. I am payng close to $400 per night, why can't these bottles be delivered to my room. The room is really shabby and very grotty. You can see the dirt in the grouting in the floor and the walls above the bath. The mirror looks like someone has scratched the reflective material around the edges. I assume this wear is caused by condensation. The hotel rooms is certainly in need of deep renovation. On checkin I was asked if I wanted to checkout late, which is 4pm for a platinum member, I said yes to this because I wanted to visit the city before heading off at 4pm to the airport for a 8pm departure. This would of allowed me to freshen up for a long trip ahead of me. But after confirming this the night before checkout, I was told no, 2pm was the time I had to leave. I just paid the hotel $3300 and they couldn't even let me checkout at 4pm which is the case at every other Hyatt I have ever stayed in. When I mentioned other hotels always allow a 4pm checkout, I was told that is probably due to them being smaller properties. This Grand Hyatt is a very large hotel. This tops it all, the experience with one of the members of staff in the restaurant. My colleague and I were seated for breakfast as normal, we were handed menu's then we waited, waited and waited. To avoid being late for a meeting, I decided go find another waiter. The new waiter served us very quickly, I'm happy again. On receiving the cheque, my colleague gave a $3 tip which was about 10% due to the poor service we received. When the waiter came to collect the cheques, he looked at the tip, and threw it back down on the table demanding at least 15%!! I told him this is due to poor service and he is lucky to receive any tip at all, it's discretionary. He then picked the cheque up and said, not to worry as he will change it at the till!! I could not believe it, never in 15 years of going to the US had I seen anything like this before. After a heated loud argument with this waiter we demanded to see the manager. The manager later applogized and gave my colleague a bottle of wine and a cheese board. We never saw the waiter again. There are many other examples of how bad a hotel this is, generally though there is just no responsibility taken from the staff at this hotel, they just simply do not care about the people who stay here.On checkout, I had to pay $3 to store my luggage, not even in vegas you have to do this.To summarize, if visting New York, think twice about staying here. There are so many other good hotels in the city and I certainly will not be returning.
I am a platinum member and stay at this hotel all the time and continue to be disappointed. The only good thing about this hotel is its location. Some of the rooms are a good size and generally decent. The bathrooms have scope for improvement. Cleanliness is some times an issue especially when it comes to bathrooms. Basic in room amenities are also non existent and what is offered is fairly sub-standard. Customer service... doesn't exist... period! Hyatt should send the Grand Hyatt staff to experience the customer experience at the other properties as the Grand Hyatt is a real exception when it comes to service. Very poor indeed.
