Holiday Inn Downtown Soho
- What's Included
I have been several times before in this hotel which had an ok service and a great location so when I would go to NYC I would in general book there. To my surprise the hotel is no longer part of Hilton chain (despite I had booked as a Hampton Inn at Booking.com). They are now SoHo 54. The level of service changed negatively. The front desk staff was all about attitude toward the guests (specially the ladies on the day shift). By the way congratullation to the new property management for hiring the most unfriendly front desk possible (was it on purpose?).
Great location and really helpful and friendly staff. The hotel is close to Canal St and Spring Street metro stations. In walking distance to Greenwich Village.A great well positioned budget friendly hotel. Would Stay here again.
BEWARE! This hotel is a step below the grimy local motel in any city you've ever been in. I am slightly suprised they don't offer rates by the hour. Light fixtures in pieces, shower dirty, carpet looks like it hasn't been cleaned or replaced in YEARS, AC broken, electrical taped cords draped across the floor, a fowl smell and AWFUL beds, lets you know this place needs a full refurbishment. I'm not exaggerating! Don't fall for the gimmick of a new name. If you're coming to the soho area there are plenty of great hotels that far exceed this one for the same or less $. As a weekly traveler, I've spent my fair share of time in dives, but this one competes for the worst. If you're looking for a very bottom quality motel, then I'm guessing you'll be fine with this place.
One downside why I wouldn't stay here again is that the ice machine in the cellar produced fragments of ice with dirt specks inside. This turned my stomach. I had stayed here a number of years before and I don't remember this being the case then. Otherwise, this slender high rise seems pretty well worn out now. When I checked in the desk lamp was busted. I called the reception and they didn't hestitate in bringing me a brand new lamp. The maintenance attendant didn't even check to see if a burnt bulb was the problem. So they probably knew before hand that this furnishing was well past its half life. Also, the room carpet had been visibly sewn back together in several places. Something like you might find in a trucker's motel. Moreover, I found housekeeping to be spotty. The paper cups supplied with the room were never replaced after I used each one (though they were discarded). So I took a bunch from the lobby coffee stand so I wouldn't run out. There is a so/so morning breakfast and the hotel location is good for walks to Chinatown, Soho, and the West Village. Several subway stations are just south on Canal Street. And I noticed the Bolt Bus has a pick up and drop off just across the street. If you stay here make sure you don't overpay for what you'll be getting.
It's OK, nothing more. Managed to grab a room at the 18th floor, which I was very glad about, because the entrance to the Holland tunnel is just beneath the hotel, and it's unbelievably noisy. Skip "breakfast" if you think you deserve a reasonable coffee or food. Go to Starbucks or something. I stayed there for 3 nights while attending a conference not far from the hotel. I would not stay there again, either for business or as a tourist. But I must say the room was OK, shower was excellent! even in my high floor room.
