Holiday Inn Midtown
- What's Included
My mom chose this place based off reviews after searching intensely for weeks. I shared a 2 double bed room with a friend and my mom had her own room. We stayed for 5 nights, 6 days.Cons: Hotel is very, very outdated. Bathrooms were old; our toilet barely flushed, wall paper was heavily peeling. The walls/windows are incredibly thin so you can hear the heavy traffic outside. My key card to my room would often stop working and I had to get it re-coded several times. The elevators are old and take FOREVER (this is with 3 lifts). If you leave early, it'll be fine but around 10-11 AM we waited 15 minutes before giving up and taking the stairs. The bar/restaurants dinners were extremely disappointing (oily pasta, under cooked/slimy chicken fingers). My mom's room also had a safe - ours did not.Pros: Very reasonably priced and the rooms were very clean. Each room has a nice large TV with good stations, we always found an enjoyable movie/TV show on every night.I found it to be a GREAT location. Walkable to pretty much everything - we walked to Central Park; Times Square and Rockefeller Centre. I also felt incredibly safe there. The staff had been very lovely. It has a great restaurant downstairs - however, we only had a positive experience with the breakfast selection. Good coffee (which was really tough to find). Beds were INCREDIBLY comfortable and I had an amazing nights sleep. Another pro is that if you're looking for a GOOD food place nearby Fluffy's, which is less than 2 blocks away, has AMAZING food. We went there numerous times.Overall it's not the best hotel, but I would definitely stay there again especially knowing the good food places around. For the price you pay, you get a clean room; a good night's sleep and feel safe.
I love NYC and have visited many times, and previously stayed at the Holiday Inn Midtown. I decided to come back to the Holiday Inn this year on my trip, as I enjoyed the location and the hotel atmosphere. However, the hotel has changed DRAMATICALLY in the past few years and I wasn't happy with my stay. The lifts are old and take a long time to arrive, staff are too busy gossiping about their workplace to assist you and it's not the cleanest of places. On the second night I was there, there were several dishes which stayed in the corridor for at least 24hrs before I had to call someone to do something about them, as the hall was beginning to smell. My travel buddy had got coffee on two of the mornings we were there, as we thought it was included in our package. On the third morning he was asked to pay, but didn't have money on him as he was never asked to pay before. When he explained the situation the server took the coffee off him and the bus boy looked at him and laughed as he poured it into the bin. My friend was not happy and expressed that this was rude and unacceptable. He asked to speak to the manager in which he was directed to reception and given an email address. After about 30min a member of reception and security knocked at the door and stated to my friend that he was banned from the bar and breakfast area because of his behaviour. This GREATLY upset me, as he was accused of things he didn't do, was intimidated by staff and was barely given an opportunity to explain his side of the story. They didn't care, and my stay was made uncomfortable by this. The rooms are dated and run down, and staff lack communication and cohesion. The only staff that were pleasant was housekeeping. On the plus side, the location is great. Close to Central Park and the subway which makes getting around easy. It's also a short walk (about 10min) to Time Square and Broadway. If you are catching an uber to the airport from here, it will cost you about $80- not cheap, but easier and cheaper then a cab or town car. I really hope Holiday Inn Midtown adjust their attitude and service when they reopen in February under the new name of 'The Watson Hotel'.
The facet water is not clear. No bathroom in the lobby? No food available after breakfast??Had to order delivery for lunch.Vending machine in hallway had no water. Elevator buttons were crooked old yellow plastic.
We stayed in a standard room with a king-size bed and private bathroom. The room was clean and comfortable. Intelligent design of the bathroom area so that one person could shower while the other could use the vanity. I was glad to find a magnifying mirror and a hairdryer. Staff at check in and check out was very courteous. We were allowed to check in early which was a big help since we wanted to drop our luggage off before lunch. Free luggage storage after checking out as well. The drawbacks: the staff member at luggage storage was very unprofessional. He was glued to his cell phone and didn't look up when I told him I wanted to store my luggage. Very unfriendly service after that. The bellman in the lobby was not the best help either. When I asked about storing luggage, he leaned back on his counter and said "behind you". Behind me where exactly? We stayed in the lobby for 20 minutes to wait for our cab and saw him walking in and out the door like he couldn't keep still, hands in his pockets. He was covered head to toes in a long coat and a hat. He looked more manacing and suspicious than helpful. There was a suspicious character loitering in the lobby. He looked into my husband's bag outside the men's room and asked to borrow the newspaper. Then he stood there (outside the men's room and the ladies' room mind you) reading the newspaper. Later on we saw him walking around the lobby like that's the only thing he does all day long.No microwave or fridge in the room is another disappointment.Good location and overall a good experience so we will definitely consider staying again.
Only good thing about this place is location, all the rest was very disappointing even for a two night stay. The hotel is very outdated and overpriced. We had a queen room, but the bed was smaller than a usual queen, furniture and carpets were old and the safe (even though it is included in the room description) was missing. Elevators are small and slow - If you are heading out around cheek-out time, you might wait over 30 min for a place in an elevator. To sum it up, I will defensively not recommend this place to anyone and would avoid staying there in the future.
