Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel
- What's Included
I have stayed at this hotel many times in the past and have been somewhat satisfied but my most recent stay was quite a let down. I do have a disclaimer. I had been an SPG Platinum member for a few years but am currently only a Gold member. The differences are quite remarkable. I just didn't realize how bad it was previously because I was a Platinum member. I did not realize that one cannot utilize the gym without paying $10 per day. The business center is also not managed by Hilton but appeared to be by Fedex. Usage of the computer costs 40 cents a minute! I guess the inability to access the Club Lounge as a Gold member severely diminished the experience overall. One would think that paying for the room will at least allow you to use the gym and the business center for free. On top of that, bags storage by the Bell-man costs $10 per bag. Little irritations add up to me not returning for a stay again.
I went on a solo trip to New York in June to visit some friends and after a lot of research on location etc I chose to book in at the Sheraton. I wasn't looking for exceptional luxury like you'd get at the Plaza, just a nice hotel in a good location that was clean and safe that I could come and go from without any hassle. The Sheraton ticked all the boxes for me, the location was excellent, a 2 minute walk one way and you were at Times Square, 2 minutes the other way you were at Central Park. From the hotel I could walk to all the main tourist attractions (Empire state, Rockefeller Centre etc), it is also right night to the subway which takes you directly down to the World Trade Center is you want to go to the 9/11 museum. Checking in was easy and quick, and my room was massive, I wasn't expecting much size wise as I know NY isn't known for it's space, but I booked a standard room and ended up in a large room with 2 king size beds and a large bathroom. I wasn't hassled in the hotel at all by over active staff, if you needed help they were there, but if not they weren't fishing for tips trying to aid your every move. Wifi was good in the room and in the lobby etc. Only complaint I really had was that you had to pay to store your bags for the hours between check out and when you leave, something I've never come across in a 4 or 5 star hotel before. The concierge were also helpful and knowledgable, they had plenty of maps and guide books on hand to give you and will happily talk you through how to get somewhere or the best places to go. Also on hand to book cars to airports, something that I used. Car service was excellent!
On check in I asked how much the pre-authorisation would be, to which I was told it would be $50. After day 1 in the hotel there was now $50 plus $450 being held on my card. I asked front desk why the amount was held on my card to which the girl said it was a glitch and would be released within 48 hours. I work in hotels and know that authorisations on international cards can take 30 days to be released, which is why i was annoyed that $450 was going to be frozen for the rest of our holiday. So after explaining to the girl that i was told the hold would be $50 on check in she replied "well i didnt check you in". What kind of service is that in a 5 star hotel? I then asked to speak to the manager to which she replied "He cant do anything, i already told you the money will be released". Asked again to speak to the manager, and after an eye roll she went and got him. He also shrugged it off and said the money would be back in 48 hours (came back 28 days after checking out).Bottom line is a little bit of empathy goes a long way. I get it, glitches happen. My initial concern was that someone had made charges to my room which is why more money was held on my card, which is why i spoke to front desk. Never experienced such attitude from a staff member and complete disregard of any Sheraton service standards. Will never stay here again or recommend to anyone else.
The room was clean and the hotel staff was helpful and cheerful. I enjoyed my stay.I recommend the Sheraton to anyone staying in New York. And, the location is perfect, it's near Broadway and Times Square.
Cons: Okay... seriously, maybe it's age, but check-in experience matters, and it was less than stellar, at the Sheraton Times Square.FRONT DESK STAFF:Rebecca, at the front desk, seemed less than eager to provide a smooth check-in -- and she even wrote the wrong room number on the key folder (sending us 2 floors away from our appointed room, and the numbers written down were not even similar). It clearly seemed purposeful, especially on a day when there was a HUGE wait for elevators and it would add about 30-40 minutes onto our evolution of actually getting to our room. We were not happy.Elevators: sigh. We checked in about 11 PM. Sheraton has 'upgraded' their elevator system (not an enhancement, the best I can tell). It took a super long time to get an elevator and reach our room (no exaggeration). It was a constant irritation (not to sound petty), but the delays, at times, were very long. PROS: Jacob! I'm not sure if he is a front-desk manager or supervisor, but he was/is STELLAR! He made a terrible check-in experience tolerable. Had it not been for Jacob, we might have gone to the Westin or Marriott, which are both nearby and had availability. The beds/pillows: very comfortable; we slept well! Thank you!Bottom line: We will be returning to the Westin Times Square. (We stayed at the Sheraton this time, as the point redemption for a room was significantly lower. 16,000 points was too much to 'give away', for this stay, however.)
