Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel
- What's Included
Worst Sheraton 3 night stay ever. Elevators are being reworked and can take forever in the process. Some great staff and some r awful. No consistency. Smaller than tiny room. Good location but not a comfortable stay. Surprised at Sheraton.
I booked this on SPG using points. From the moment we checked in it was a slow steady degrading experience. We came to NYC to get married after 28 years together. There was no recognition of status and we were told there was simply nothing but a room with 2 single beds available. Using the marriage card they miraculously came up with a king room, which we had booked. I won't bore you all with the list of disappointments we experienced, but the final straw was coming home from seeing "Hamilton" and finding both security doors to the room next door wide open. Not only did we have access to a room full of other people's possessions but we had no idea whether someone had managed to rifle through our things. The manager promised to call back after a security investigation and 24 hours later we have still not heard back. I intend on using up my Starwood Points -- I'm done with SPG.
My son and I wanted to get some East Coast culture (we live way "Upstate NY") so we saw three shows in two days. There is no better location for the very short walk to the theaters on Broadway! The Club is always exciting and well worth the upgrade, especially in NYC, but the evenings looking down on Times Square can't be beat. The rooms (two double beds) were very comfortable and extremely well kept. I belong to the Cornell Club on 6 East 44th, but often stay at the Sheraton for the shorter walking distance to the shows (medical issue).
My family (2 adults and 2 children under 10) stayed on Level 33 (3 nights) and Level 36 (5 nights) at two separate times in July. This is an extremely busy hotel with regular events/ conferences unlike I have ever seen in my life having travelled quite a bit. The first time we stayed there was a national dance competition/ conference so the foyer and elevators where struggling to cope with the dance moms and teenage girls but when you did get through the queues the service was pleasant. Concierge service was good although the Front Desk reception appeared jaded given the queues which lead to every single person having some kind of complaint.Second time we visited it was FAR WORSE as there was an international indian film festival with the hotel incapable of managing that many people in and around the hotel. All I can say is to check whether there are conferences booked at this hotel before booking as it was intolerable particular when managing young children. To the point they had police and security plus barricades to keep out the crowds and 20 minute waits for the lifts and 30 minute plus waits for reception.Elevators/ Lifts:Much has been written about the lifts and even the most patient person can be tested as it can be terrible at peak times. Sometimes they arrive straight away though so it is the luck of the draw.Note to Sheraton - the automated lift system you have implemented is flawed. We have it in my work building and it works perfectly as every single person has to swipe and request the lift but it is not suitable for a hotel as it doesn't register how many people in a group nor how many bags (i.e. only one person per group or family calls a lift then crushes in and the lift arrives and 20 people rush for it). Either get someone to adjust the loading average per call to 3 or more or some other fix and you may have a slightly better algorithm and loading. Overall I gave this hotel a 4 star as the rooms were great and the service when outside of the peak crush conference times was fantastic. It is an easy walk to Central Park and Times Square and to Broadway.Rooms were on the smaller side with beds being true doubles so with a family of four it was on the tighter side but certainly manageable.
As an SPG traveler - I try to stay in their hotels (always checking with TA before actually booking, so I can see what my fellow reviewers are saying!)I found this property to be just as I have come to expect: good service, clean and comfortable rooms, a good stay. Can't beat this for location and value.
