Westin New York at Times Square
- What's Included
Great hotel with great service and location. Close to theater district and Times Square. Took subway from JFK and hotel is across the street from 42 Ave station. Service was very friendly and accommodating.
This is a decent hotel, but for the money, I'd stay at the Hilton Centric, Intercontinental, or the Hilton (newly renovated). Although well maintained, the whole place is starting to show its age, particularly the rooms, which lack enough outlets and have poorly designed bathrooms with too little counter space. But the beds are great, and if you are just using it for a place to crash after the work day, it's very conveniently located in Times Square and has better than average room service. One huge demerit is the front desk, which is understaffed and inefficient in the evening, so there is typically a line of guests trying to check in and a bunch of unmanned registration computers. In my most recent stay, the first room offered smelled of mildew, but that was quickly corrected, once I got a chance to speak with somebody at the front desk. If you are wedded to Starwood, this is your hotel in Times Square, unless you want to try the Marriott Marquis, which is comparable but much, much larger.
New York is not an easy city, and that's why a hotel is even more important to me there - I need a room as a break from the insane pace and rude people. The Westin is a very attractive hotel. I've only stayed at the W Times Square before, and I would rank this hotel more attractive. But the staff at the W are kinder, in my experience, and the location of the W is truly superior in terms of the toughness of 8th Avenue that can really get to you after a while. And what makes it even worse is that the hotel staff - who are in a position to help make it better - actually make it worse. And, yes, I'm talking to you, valet team. These guys are just there for anyone who greases their palm with greenbacks, and if you don't immediately show them some cash, you are treated like scum - even as a hotel guest. And that cynical attitude really puts a damper on a visit. I even paid them to help me with a taxi in the morning, and in the afternoon, when I went out to get a taxi for my disabled mother, and was successful in flagging one down, one of the valet team actually grabbed it from me and put other hotel guests in (who had paid him more, I assume). And this maneuver left my poor mother waiting on the corner for another 20 minutes. That's the kind of move that will make me think twice about returning. Also, while they have a very nice store for beverages inside the hotel, when it is closed, we are encouraged to go to Dwayne Reed across the street. This is a great opportunity to hang out with prostitutes and junkies and dealers. Ah, 8th Avenue. As I said, I would likely stay at the W location. But I gave the Westin a try. And I think it was a truly GREAT value. Just not particularly friendly to its guests.
Bed was clean and comfortable , stayed here for 5nights. Booked a grand deluxe king corner room as it was our silver wedding and requested good view of Times Square, view from our room was of the bus terminal ! I never usually request anything or mention it’s a special occasion and now I know why as it makes no difference what’s so ever !! Have been to New York before so didn’t feel the need to be up and out at the crack of dawn everyday so always put the do not disturb sign on door only for house keeping to phone us 3 days in a row to see when they could come in. We were always out the room by 10.30am !!!Would defiantly stay in Times Square again as it’s a brilliant location and within easy walking distance of most of the attractions. Just don’t think I’d stay at this hotel. Stayed at The Westin Hotel Grand Central last year and what a difference that was... def worth a 4* review.
Key system was down, didn’t get the room I’d requested and air conditioning didn’t work. But comfortable, friendly, convenient for all of Manhattan. Bar is also great for a business focused property. Would recommend
