Disney's Port Orleans Resort
- What's Included
Whenever we were booking our mid-winter trip to Disney World, I wanted two things: 1.A place that wasn't crowded, 2. a shuttle service that could get us to the parks in a reasonable amount of time (i.e. around 15 min.) for the cost of a moderate resort. Several years ago, we stayed at one of the Value Resorts, and honestly, I didn't see the benefit of doing that compared to just staying at a hotel off property. We were packed in like sardines (and it was during low season) for everything: The food lines were ridiculous, only to get food that tasted like plastic and to be packed onto buses that took nearly a half hour to get to anything. So, personal space and proximity to the park was what we were looking for. I have to say, French Quarter delivered. First, the grounds are beautiful. It definitely has that slow, elegant, southern charm. It seemed quieter than other places. I think one of the reasons for that is that it is often a destination for older couples, perhaps without children (although we did see many young families there.) The food was very good. Didn't feel like I was eating cheap plastic. The beignets were fabulous! Here's a tip: Get the kids' sized meals. They are just as good (quality-wise), and they are enough to fill most adults. The kids' pasta dish with turkey meat sauce is delicious. Or, get one adult plate and split it between two children. They give you more than enough food. I never had to wait more than a few minutes to get our meals or get through the line - and this was even on a Friday when things were getting busier. Also, the bus times were VERY reasonable. I really appreciated the bus stop shelters, which shielded us from the sun, along with the monitors that showed you the approximate time for the next bus to each park. Again, we never felt crammed on the bus, and if it was clear that there were too many people for one bus, within a few seconds, another bus pulled up behind and took the people remaining. It was NEVER the case that you had to wait for the return trip for a shuttle, which would have been another half an hour or so. Also, French Quarter shuttles don't have to share with other resorts. So, your trip to and from the parks are direct, cutting down the travel time. Another thing I loved about the French Quarter is that it sits along the river and shares the grounds with the next door resort, Riverside. Both are very similar in aesthetics - old southern and stately. You can also use the facilities and restaurants at Riverside if you are staying at French Quarter. I would go on my morning or evening runs along the cobblestone sidewalk that skirts he perimeter of the river. I felt completely safe, and saw many other runners, especially in the morning. Here are a few things I think they could improve upon: 1. Some of the furniture in the roomneeded to be either repaired or completely replaced. The armoire had chunks at the bottom that were completely torn off. Not a huge deal for us, but I could see how it might be an issue for other people. 2. Surprisingly, the room service/cleaning was not that great. One day, we came back to find that the toilet had obviously not been cleaned at all. Also, for some reason, they don't like to take dishes back to the restaurant that are in the room. Again, these aren't deal breakers, but things they could improve upon. We definitely got what we were looking for in a resort, and we highly recommend it! :)
This was my first time staying at a Disney resort and wasnt sure what to expect. It was just my wife and i and it was the perfect location for a couple. It was a smaller resort and felt very comfrortable. It was very convenient to get to all of the parks. I especially enjoyed the boat shuttle to Disney Springs. It made it so easy to get there and we went every night. Definitely will stay there the next time we go!!
Theme and decoration is New Orleans and Mardi Gras. Our room faced the pool -- we're retired but enjoyed seeing the families with children using the mini-water park out our front door. We were impressed by the friendliness and helpfulness of all the staff -- front desk, concierge, doorman, the bellmen, and gift shop personnel were terrific. Same for the food service (Sassagoula Float Works, decorated with Mardi Gras float elements) -- the cooks, servers, cashiers, and bus boys were at the top of their game, helpful with a variety of nice Cajun/Creole dishes for dinner. And breakfasts were unbelievable (we were on the Quick Service meal plan, which also covered lunches in the parks).Scrupulously clean room -- much nicer and larger than we anticipated for the price of a "moderate" resort. The whole place was amazingly clean. Very satisfying...One additional advantage at Port Orleans is that you can ride the "riverboat" from their dock to Disney Springs, great for after-hours dining and shopping.
Our first time at this hotel will not be our last...our stay was wonderful. This place is so charming with such a New Orleans flair. Stay on the river. Boats right outside your door take you to Disney Springs and back all day and night. Staff/rooms/food all great. Highly recommend.
This resort is perfect for adults, teens and kids! It has an onsite Arcade for the pre-teens, a water park and playground for little ones and a boat ride to Disney Springs for the big kids. For adults it has a pool side bar, walking trails, gift shop, and laundry! The buses ran as posted. The food was wonderful (you can even request Gluten Free beignets)!! If you are having a tough time figuring out where to stay, give this resort a try...you won't regret it!
