Westgate Lakes Resort & Spa
- What's Included
OverviewLakefront Villa Complex situated 1 mile from Sea World & 2 miles from Universal Studios.
I've stayed at various Westgate resorts about a half-dozen times over the years, but only once before at Westgate Lakes, when it was fairly new. The location of the resort is very good as it's only about 10-15 minutes from all the major attractions in the area. All interactions with staff-- both prior to arrival and during our stay-- were very positive, and it's apparent they stress this with their company. However, unless you use the valet option, we found that parking anywhere near the office was impossible day or night, so we skipped everything associated with the main building throughout our stay after checking-in. Although they have a parking garage, the property is so spread out it doesn't really help unless you're assigned to a building within reasonable walking distance to it. We were not.Our room was the furthest from the main building that you can get on the property, which to us was a good thing because it was quiet and we could often find a parking space within a 1 block radius. We had a 3-bedroom villa facing the lake and the view was great all times of the day. Unfortunately, that's about where the positives ended with regard to the villa. It became clear upon entering that the rooms needed some significant renovation and/or deep cleaning. Sure, the overall surfaces seemed as if they'd been wiped down, the sheets had been changed, etc, but there was dirt and grime in places that suggested these rooms have never had anything more than your usual maid service done to them. I've attached some pictures below of some of the things I felt worthy of mentioning. Our rooms were also infested with ants (I took video but TA doesn't let you post that), the air conditioning didn't work and the WiFi was down property-wide for a significant portion of our stay. Lastly, despite being here for a week, we only received maid service 2 days before we left. Yep, 7 people in a villa... no housekeeping for 5 days!It should be noted that we did not contact the resort about anything other than to inquire as to why housekeeping wasn't showing up or to check on the WiFi status. We figured mentioning the other conditions may have led to us being moved to a building that wasnt as quiet-- which was critical to the age range of the children we were traveling with. Ants don't keep you up all night. So the bottom line is that Westgate Lakes has a lot going for it but they need to work on the condition of their rooms. They were clearly designed prior to the age of laptops and cell phones, so renovations may also allow for more practical electrical outlet placement/USB chargers, etc (I literally had to run a chord from the kitchenette area to my bed to use my laptop because there were no accessible outlets anywhere closer.)It should also be noted that we stopped in at the on-site Westgate Smokehouse Grill one evening for take-out to the room. We waited over 5 minutes before someone noticed we were there. Eventually a nice young woman tried to take our order from the check-in desk, but between the apparent lack of staff and another guy trying to schmooze a table without a reservation, she quickly became overwhelmed. For some reason she then had to phone in our order to the kitchen from this desk, and the kitchen later called back with a list of clarifications along with items from our orders they had run out of for the evening. At this point there were too many red flags for us as the disorganization was obvious, so we canceled and went elsewhere.
We had a lovely time in Orlando. Although it was pretty cold in December. The Westgate resort has very spacious and comfortable apartments with all you need for a vacation. We even had washing machine and dryer, a coffee machine, a very nice kitchen and a balcony to relax and read. The sofa bed could improve as it was a bit old and hard but the bed inside the main room was very comfortable. The facility of a mini market right there is also very clever and helps you save some money if you like cooking and can fix a quick meal or sandwiches for the parks. Excellent choice!
I stayed here as part of corporate group reservation for a conference. This place has its pros and cons (below). Might work out OK for a family vacation, specially if mixed with full days at the park. I would not recommend it for business travelers. Cons:- Some of the rooms share air conditioning units with other units. I had to be switched rooms the first night because the AC wasn't working and it was too late for them to go to the unit next door. Later in the week the AC would work sporadically. This is a major issue with the heat in Florida! - There are no sidewalks that can get you from all the buildings to the lobby, forcing you to walk on the parking lot with plenty of cars buzzing by. - On busy nights the parking lot is pretty full, making you drive around or forcing you to park far away. - There is a convenience store in the property but it closes at 10. I got there late and needed to get water. I found two vending machines but the credit card unit on them was offline. - The rooms are a bit run down, there were some stains on the bed in the first room. Pros:- Service was very good. They picked up the phone almost immediately. They had a tech show up 15 to 20 mins after I called for the AC late at night. - Staff was always courteous and helpful. - They seem to be making efforts to keep up the grounds. You can see staff working throughout the day outside and they are finishing a new building at the front.- They have golf carts to help you get around.- Coffee shop in the lobby with speedy service and plenty of options. I'm torn about the rating. Overall I'd rate it as average. However as a business traveler I rate it as "poor".
I was just recently in Orlando and stayed at this lovely resort. I was pleasantly surprised at how beautiful the site was after seeing many bad reviews on the resort. Upon my arrival I was greeted with smiles by the staff who rushed to help me with my things and get me to where I needed to go in order to check in. After check in I was taken toy room and the bellhop brought my bags to the room gave me all of his information and said anything we need to ask for him and he'd come immediately with whatever I needed. During my stay my mother became sick and the staff came to our door picked us up and took us to the marketplace to get medicine. Instead of just dropping us off both drivers on different occasions stayed until my mother was finished shopping and helped us back to our room. The front desk answered any questions we had and made sure that we had transportation anywhere we needed to go. Upon check out they sent us off with the same smiles we were greeted with on day one and thanked us for staying. Everyone was so wonderful and I can't wait to stay there on my next trip to Orlando!
Beautiful hotel! Unfortunately we spent most of our time at Disney so we did not get to take full advantage of it but it was really nice and clean! Loved that we got a washer/dryer it definitely came in handy!
