I stayed Sunday-Thursday last week. Room was nice and clean. Right on the beach. I did have a problem with the drawer on the dresser in the room. It wouldn't stay closed. I hit my knee on it coming around the bed a couple of times. I called and they sent a service engineer and he said it was not level. He tried to level it and it didn't work. He suggested I call and ask for a different room. They didn't want to change my room. So the next day they came in and fixed it without me being there and said they "replaced" the drawer slides. It sort of worked... the drawer only opened a half inch or so.
We stayed at the Grand Plaza because we were attending a family wedding that was taking place on the beach and the reception what is being held at the Grand Plaza. I have to say that when we were booking the hotel they were unbelievably helpful. They gave us a discount because we were wedding guests and did everything to help us get the best room possible. When we arrived at the hotel the staff was very friendly and helpful in getting us our room. Sadly the Decour of the hallways and the room do not give you the beach ambience that one would hope for. And for the price of the room they were really very cheaply decorated. We had a room that overlooked the gulf with a beautiful view. Sadly the The noise from the beachfront restaurant downstairs echoed up into our room (which included the live band that played until three in the morning). It was a very lively hotel because of all the weddings, so again sadly, we had a lot of noise and commotion in the hallways at all hours of the night. And one night one of the guests decided to flip the fire alarm forcing everyone in the hotel to evacuate at three in the morning (we had to trudge up and down nine flights of stairs ). I suppose the hotel is just a bit too loud for our taste. The beach front of the hotel has wonderful amenities for water sports ... parasailing, jet skiing, etc. and there are lounge chairs with umbrellas available for rent so you have to haul or purchase your own. As far as being a wedding venue hotel it is fantastic. They have the beach set up with palm trees lined to make for a beautiful wedding ceremony. And the three ball rooms available for reception are fantastic. The catering was delicious. I would highly advise it as a wedding destination.
I don't know about the hotel rooms---I was impressed it is sooooo white....sanatorium white! ha However, for a dining experience that allows you to enjoy the view from the 12th floor in a slow revolving restaurant, it is perfect. We enjoyed the bistro and bar from which you may access from the 12th floor...just take the steps down to an open air view, drinks and appetizers. It becomes "packed" as sunset arrives, but even during the day it is so enjoyable.
Was only there for a late night cocktail. Great views of the gulf and sunset. Trendy vibe, popular spot. Small plates, desserts, drinks and music. Liked the lighting after dark and how it provided a subtle ambiance to the rooftop mood. Would love to go back for an evening sunset.
They say that the three most important things in real estate are "Location, Location, Location." The Grand Plaza Beachfront Resort in St. Pete Beach, Florida, may be the perfect location for a beach vacation. The hotel itself seems a little bit retro without trying to be. Frank Sinatra or Humphrey Bogart could have been walking through the lobby or the restaurants half a century ago with the place looking just as it looks today. But that's not to say it looks old or worn out; it doesn't. It just isn't one of today's polished shiny new luxury hotels. But it's nice and comfortable and very clean, and the staff is very friendly and helpful. But most of all, it's right there on the beach. And it's a beautiful broad beach with about a hundred yards of white sand from the hotel to the blue-green water. The beach was not crowded, even though on the weekend with perfect weather. There was a constant breeze for the several days we were there in May. According to the weather reports, the temperature was in the 80+ to 90+ range and the humidity was fairly high, but I couldn't tell because the strong breeze made it cool, comfortable, and invigorating. There are four restaurants in the hotel, one of which, Bongos, is on the beach---not just a beach view, but on the beach. Another restaurant, Spinners, is on top of the hotel (12th floor), which slowly revolves to provide 360-degree views up and down the beach, across the island to Boca Ciega Bay, and beyond that toward St. Petersburg.St. Pete Beach is a small town on an island on Florida's Gulf Coast (about mid-way north-to-south), accessible by bridge from St. Petersburg. There are several other small towns along that string of islands connected by bridges, and there is plenty to explore. It's only about a 15-minute drive to downtown St. Petersburg, which is a sophisticated mid-size city. There are a number of places to visit in St. Petersburg, including many museums, notably the Salvador Dali Museum and the Chihuly Collection (blown glass sculpture). Downtown St. Petersburg is right on Tampa Bay, and there are several beautiful parks at the water's edge. It's less than an hour's drive to Tampa for all the things to see and do there, or to Tampa International Airport. Orlando is about two hours away by car. There are many casual restaurants on St. Pete Beach. We ate at one called Woody's Waterfront Cafe and Beach Bar. The food was very good and reasonably priced. But again the emphasis is on the location: this is true waterfront. Our table at the edge of the dining area was three feet from an inlet called Blind Pass, which connects to the Gulf. I could have reached out my arm from my table and dropped a rock straight down into the water. We sat there in the sun (although they have umbrellas up for shade if you want it) and watched the pelicans diving for fish. No one was in a hurry, and it made for a very peaceful afternoon.St. Pete Beach is a great place to relax and rejuvenate.
